How The Appliance Shortage Brought Out The Worst In Some Service Providers
As is the case with many crises, there is always someone looking to take advantage of the situation. After speaking with friends and colleagues, we’ve heard horror stories about third party service providers showing up to a service call only to find a reason not to perform maintenance on the appliance.
Volfi Mizrahi of New York City needed service on a washing machine after running into trouble with a new model. When the service provider arrived at Mizrahi’s apartment, they informed him that they did not want to unstack the washer or call the building manager for help. Although the majority of washers and dryers in NYC are stacked due to spacial concerns, the service provider did not ask Mizrahi of the configuration before showing up to the apartment. In this case, the the service had to be paid for despite the fact that it was never completed.
Unfortunately, Mizrahi’s story is not an isolated incident. We’ve heard far too many stories of third party service providers making multiple trips to a home in order to collect more money from the customer or manufacturer.
Here are some tips to avoid being taken advantage of:
- Initiate the service call with the manufacturer to ensure you’re dealing with a licensed, reputable service provider.
- If your product is covered by a warranty, ask the provider if there will be any out-of-pocket costs. It’s also a good idea to get this information in writing.
- If the service provider tries to charge you a fee, send the bill to the manufacturer.
With Inventories Still Low Here’s How To Shop For A Large Appliance
CR offers expert tips and tactics to help you get the model you want
If you plan to buy or upgrade a large appliance now, the chances of getting what you wantand getting it soonare a bit better than they were a few months ago. But patience is still the watchword. And dont get your hopes up about lots of big bargains during seasonal sales.
Inventory backupsand the delivery delays they causeare easing somewhat, experts tell us. But theyre still historically high.
“Its not uncommon to wait two to three weeks, and with some products four to six weeks,” says David MacGregor, an appliance-industry analyst at Longbow Research in Cleveland. Long as that seems, its a slight improvement over the four-to-eight-week period MacGregor reported to Consumer Reports last fall.
Delays on some higher-end items continue to be up to four months, says the senior acquisition agent who buys large appliances for CRs tests.
Back-orders have dropped to 125,000 units from 350,000, reports Ken Miele, CEO of the Appliance Dealers Cooperative in Monroe, N.J., which supplies large appliances to more than 200 independent appliance dealers. Still, thats a far cry from a pre-pandemic back-order level of 2,000 to 4,000 machines. We are now looking to the end of the year to relieve the back-orders, Miele adds. The new normal is fewer choices.
How Is The Appliance Shortage Affecting Customers
Because the lead time on securing your dream appliances is a little longer now because of the shortage, theres now more to take into account when coming in to look at appliances.
Usually, when I first meet a customer, I always inquire about where they are in their project at the moment, said Sales Representative Cinthya Guallpa. If they said they were still about three to four months out, I would always give them space to really think about models/brands prior to suggesting ordering. Now due to COVID, I find myself going over realistic dates and really stressing dates and backorders in order for us not to run into further delays. Im also asking about their designer/contractor so I can also work with them in helping the customer decide sooner rather than later.
The good news is that the delay in getting the appliances may not be as big a setback as customers initially assumed. Kitchen designers are telling us they are seeing eight to ten weeks for cabinetry and other items so thats the timing of many projects. So its not like the appliances are going to hold them up, everything is taking a little longer, said Director of Partner Experience Tracy Kuchar. I would say if a customer is planning their dream kitchen and theyve waited a long time for it, then most are willing to hold out for their preferred products even if it means a few extra weeks.

Blomberg And Beko: Next Time
Beko, a mainstream European appliance brand, has been a fringe brand in the US under the Blomberg banner for about a decade. As weve understood the situation, the dishwashers work well, but theyve been easy to buy only in certain regions of the US, so weve never recommended them. But the company looks to be expanding its presence, and well try to get one of its machines the next time we test dishwashers.

Appliance Shortages And Longer Wait Times Means Challenges For Consumers And Retailers
While we are slowing seeing things return to normal socially after the pandemic, its another story for many businesses that are now facing another challenge: longer wait times to get the product to supply their customers need.
Tom Barber, owner of Barber & Haskill, your one-stop appliance and mattress store in Midland, said that wait times for certain appliances is into spring of 2023, and currently, theyre waiting on 4,500 appliances. Products like fridges, stoves and dishwashers used to come within days, now its months.
Barber explains that early in the pandemic when everything shut down, so did manufacturing. However, they quickly realized that people were still going to need appliances, fridges were still going to break and that the demand wasnt going to dry up.
We were sitting on a bunch of appliances in our warehouse so we were fine for the first little while and but when that was sold, suddenly there was no supply, he said.
Mid-pandemic, when manufacturing began to start up slowly with precautions like social distancing and frequent cleaning protocols, caused production to be lower than normal.
Today, the industry still finds itself trying to catch up. Barber said the current issues of slower shipping of goods, along with inflation and the current labour shortages, are causing major delays with the appliances and the parts they need for service and repair, which is frustrating for them and their customers.

Is Bosch A Good Brand
Bosch. Up four places and tied for the sixth spot with a total of 68 points is Bosch. While the brand received a very good rating for gas ranges, it wowed shoppers who purchased dishwashers and cooktops, earning it an excellent rating in those categories. The rest of the scores were good across the board.

What Does Dba Mean
When you see the dBA abbreviation, that is referring to “A-weighted decibels”, which is the unit that dishwasher manufacturers use to measure how loud a dishwasher is during its operation. You’ve probably heard of decibels as a measure of loudness before, but the “A-weighting” basically refers to the fact that certain frequencies are more easily perceived by the human ear than others for instance, a flute solo sounds louder than a bass solo played at the same volume because the human ear is naturally more attuned to mid- and high-range frequencies than it is to bass-range frequencies. As a result, when manufacturers report how loud a dishwasher actually sounds to someone in the same room as the dishwasher while it’s turned on, they report that number in terms of A-weighted decibels , rather than just decibels .
Bosch dishwashers are often amongst the lowest dBA dishwashers on the market.
What You Can Do
What does this mean for Presidents Day sales? The bargains on appliances are likely to range around 15 percent, says Jordan Carter, an analyst covering large appliances for Gap Intelligence, a market-research company. Thats not as high as they were pre-pandemic but an improvement over last year, she says.
There are trends suggesting that the 2022 Presidents Day sales period will offer better and more discounts than the same period in 2021, Carter says.
Keep your eyes on large appliances by the Korean-based manufacturers Samsung and LG, Carter says, because youre likely to find more and higher discounts on their large appliances than whats available from other manufacturers. Indeed, we found a highly rated 33-inch LG refrigerator on sale at several retailers at around $1,500, a discount of 29 percent.
Even without a big price break, you can always try negotiating other aspects of your purchase, such as fees for delivery, installation and disposal, and associated parts like hoses and electric cords. Some of our independents are doing that, Miele says. Our guys want the business, so theyre going to make sure the customers are happy.
Heres a breakdown of simple tactics, whether you need a replacement right away or you can make do for a bit. In either case, check out our third annual Appliance Brand Reliability Rankings for brands to focus on. And consider the advice we compiled late last year on shopping for an appliance during a shortage, which still applies.

How Much Water Does A Dishwasher Use
Reviewed’s lab operations manager Jonathan Chan says, “The amount of water a dishwasher uses varies greatly on type and cycle selected. Normal cycles on compact models can use as little as 2.5 gallons, but larger entry-level models can use up to five gallons.”
And, although it may surprise you, dishwashers use far less water than you would by hand-washing your dishes.
If you’re environmentally- or money-conscious, the prospect of using less water and energy may be appealing to you. Be sure to check out the Energy Star rating for a dishwasher to give you an idea of what you can expect your utility bills to look like.
Most Common Appliance Sizes
I added this section so you can start planning now. Appliances should be an easy purchase, yet they are made to seem hard. Appliances fit cabinets, not the other way around. You will never see a 22-inch dishwasher or 26-inch stove because those cabinets don’t exist.

Our Advice To Customers
Sales Representative Eileen Sroka recommends that customers remain open to alternatives in case their preferred brand is unavailable. I get at least five calls a day for a Bosch dishwasher, but there are some alternative dishwashers available, Sroka said. Bosch dishwashers are unavailable right now and we dont know when they will become available. But a good substitute for that is a Miele dishwasher, which is right now immediately available. Theres currently a rebate on it and its also a high-quality European dishwasher.
She also recommends that once customers find the appliances of their dreams, they place their order as soon as possible. Once you order, youre getting yourself in line for the products, Sroka said. So if you wait another week, thats another week of other people ordering and getting in front of you.

What About Appliance Repairs
At Repair Clinic, an online parts retailer that also matches consumers with repair pros, the wait for service is currently seven to 10 days, according to Chris Zeisler, the websites technical services supervisor. That hasnt changed much since last spring.
And if you can get a technician to your home to diagnose your appliance, you may find you have another wait, for partsif theyre available. The parts that are getting caught up now in the supply chain are the control boards, because of the chip shortage, Zeisler says.
Some owners of very expensive refrigerators are waiting six to eight months for partsusually those circuit boards, Zeisler reports more complex machines can have more than one of them. In the interim, he says, those consumers are probably using the garage or basement fridge, or getting something in the used market.
The upshot: You might have to compromise by finding a temporary replacement, accepting generic parts, or deciding to buy a new appliance.

Planning A Kitchen You Hope To Finish In 0 To 6 Months
Well, you probably will not be able to buy a Miele or Bosch dishwasher. But brand loyalty will be a problem because every brand has a problem.
Look at the best available choices like Beko, LG, GE, and KitchenAid. They are among the most reliable appliance brands with great features, and they’re available.
Below are our service rates for each major category of appliances. To find these service rates, we divided the products our service team repaired by the products we sold from December 2019 to November 2020.
These figures are based on a minimum of 90 ranges sold and a sample of over 1900 total pieces. Don’t be brand loyal unless you have plenty of time to wait.
Instead, be open to different brands.
Pick the features you want the most, and then buy that brand. Be open to 2-3 brands and don’t focus on any one brand or model.
