Dont Use The Heated Dry Setting

How to Troubleshoot Dishwasher Not Drying – Whirlpool® Dishwasher

Select a dishwasher cycle, like Heated Dry, or one of a similar setup. The point of these cycles is to dry your dishes for you after the washing cycle is finished much like the point of heated dry on clothes when there is still some moisture.

One common reason why your dishwasher may fail at drying at all could be due to a part failure its possible that your part has blown out and is no longer able to do its job.

Faulty Heating Element Assembly

If your dishwasher isnt drying dishes properly, it could be due to a failure in the heating element assembly.

You can check this by using a multimeter to test whether or not the heating element is working correctly as follows.

Run the dishwasher as normal without any dishes inside and confirm its still heating up if its not, then your problem is most likely due to a faulty heating element assembly.

To resolve the issue simply replace the failed part and you should find that all is well again.

Unloading The Dishes In The Incorrect Order

Loading your dishwasher is just as important as unloading the dishwasher to prevent water from getting all over your newly-dried dishes. Even though proper dish arrangement aims to reduce pooling, it doesnt mean that it will get rid of it completely.

When water pools in the dishes on the dishrack, it will come pouring down the moment you try to remove the dishes from the dishwasher. The water will get all over the bottom rack, so you will have to go back and dry your bottom dishes for a second time.

Solution: Unload from the bottom up

The easiest solution to prevent water from the top dishrack from falling onto the bottom rack is by unloading the bottom dishrack first. As you pull the dishes out, excess water will fall toward the bottom of the tub and eventually find its way into the drain line. Only after youve unloaded the bottom dishrack should you begin removing the contents from the top rack.

How Do I Fix A Dishwasher That Runs Too Long

There are several reasons why your dishwasher might run for an excessively long amount of time. First, check the water temperature. If the water is too cold, it can take longer for the dishwasher to wash the dishes.

Another possibility is that the float switch is stuck in the on position. The float switch is a safety device that turns the dishwasher off if the water level gets too high. If the float switch is defective, it may not turn the dishwasher off, causing it to run for too long.

Finally, make sure that the door is closed all the way and that the latch is engaged. If the door isnt closed or the latch isnt engaged, the dishwasher will continue to run.

Dishes Arent Loaded Properly

Whirlpool Dishwasher Not Drying Dishes

One of the most common reasons a dishwasher leaves dishes wet is improper loading. Placing the wrong items in each rack or overloading with too many dirty dishes can limit airflow, leaving items wet. In addition, a dishwasher doesnt clean well if overloading blocks water and detergent from reaching each item.

Follow these rack-by-rack loading tips for drier dishes after each wash cycle:

  • Upper rack: Reserve this rack for glasses, mugs, and small bowls. Place them upside down and at an angle for better rinsing and drying.
  • Bottom rack: Designed for dinner plates, serving platters and cookware, always place items facing inward or upside down for better access to air. Make sure theres adequate space between each item by placing one dish in each slot.
  • Silverware basket: Avoid nesting and increase airflow by alternating forks, spoons, and knives next to each other.

Choosing The Wrong Drying Feature

Your Whirlpool dishwasher may come with various drying modes. When activating certain washing modes, such as Quick or Express, the drying feature is turned off altogether.

Solution: Select a longer drying mode

Before hitting the start button to begin a fresh wash cycle, make sure to choose the correct drying feature. Your dishwasher might have a High or Low setting, which determines how long your dishes sit in their racks to dry out.

There might also be an Extend Dry mode that keeps the dishwashers door locked for 25 to 35 minutes after the wash cycle has completed, giving more time for the remaining water droplets to dry up.

Why Does My Dishwasher Not Dry Dishes Anymore

A dishwasher’s failure to dry dishes is often caused by improper loading, says Zac Houghton, CEO at Loftera . When you overload the racks with dirty dishes or put incorrect items in the wrong racks, the airflow will be restricted, causing items to stay wet. Additionally, a dishwasher wont clean well if it is overloaded because water and detergent will not reach all items.

Of course, there could be a fault. The heating element may also not be functioning properly, says Noral Mitchell, a household decor and appliances expert and editor-in-chief of Household Advice .

Whirlpool Dishwasher Not Drying After Replacing Heating Element

Unfortunately, you could still have the same problem even after replacing your Whirlpools heating element and checking for common user error issues. This can be very frustrating. However, there are further steps you can still take to potentially fix the problem.

To achieve this, you need to see if your dishwasher is displaying any error messages. You can prompt an error message to appear by turning off your machine for five minutes and then turning it back on. If you do have an error code, it should appear after you take this step.

One of the most common problems at this point in the repair process is an issue with the machines control box. The control box is what tells your dishwasher whether your heating mode is turned on or not. Its possible that theres a problem within this process thats causing your dishwasher to think you havent selected its drying mode even though you have.

You may be able to fix this issue yourself by resetting the machines micro-controller. However, this can be pretty challenging if youre not familiar with how to do that. At this point, you may need to call a repair person out to take a look at your dishwasher and perform these repairs for you.

Plastic And Teflon Dont Dry Like Other Materials

Is it the whole load thats not drying properly or just those items made from plastic or Teflon? If thats the case, the dishwasher hasnt gone wrong, its just an issue caused by these materials.

To understand whats going on, you need to know that many modern dishwashers use condensation to dry dishes. After the final rinse, which uses hot water, the items in the machine retain heat. The stainless steel walls of the dishwasher dont retain as much and so the moisture that evaporates from the wash load condenses on the dishwashers walls. Plastic, though, doesnt retain as much heat as other materials so it can stay wet when the rest of the load is dry.

With Teflon, characteristics of the material mean the water evaporates less well, leaving it wetter.

If either of these are the problem, there isnt a fix although its worth noting that its generally recommended that Teflon kitchenware be washed by hand.

Whirlpool Dishwasher Heating Element Not Working

If you get the error code that the heating element is not working it is possible to repair it yourself. However, if you dont have much experience working with tools you can have a repair guy do it for you. Heres a summary of what you should do when your Whirlpool dishwasher heating element is not working:

Generally, the heating element will be replaced with a new one. They can be purchased online for roughly $80. To install one yourself is very easy. However, someone with experience working with tools would do it much quicker. The whole process takes less than 5 minutes to complete.

The old element is unplugged and then unscrewed. After that you simply screw in the new one and plug it in. Below I will explain how to do it step by step. However, its important to note that a repairman could install it for you for around $150.

When the heating element is not working there can be a visible crack in the heating element. The heating element is a ring that goes around the bottom of the dishwasher. There can also be a notch on it. Both of these indicate that the heating element needs to be replaced.

If you dont have good mobility or prefer to have an expert do it, I suggest hiring someone to replace it for you. Its likely simpler to have them order the replacement element for you.

You need to get underneath the dishwasher with an adjustable spanner which can be difficult to reach. Heres a video that shows how to replace a broken heating element:

Solution 1: Temperature Sensor

Why Your Whirlpool Dishwasher Leaves Dishes Wet

The temperature sensor monitors the water temperature and tells the dishwasher when to turn on the heating element. If the sensor is not working properly, the heating element may not turn on, or the dishes may not get hot enough to dry.

To test the temperature sensor, use a multimeter to test for continuity. If the reading is infinite, the temperature sensor is defective and will need to be replaced.

Ways To Boost Your Dishwasher’s Drying

There are steps you can take to improve drying performance even if your dishwasher doesnt have fancy drying options. Heres what our dishwasher experts recommend.

1. Allow space between dishes. They shouldnt touch, and your machine shouldnt be overloaded. The idea is to improve the circulation of the water and air, which improves drying.

2. Use a rinse aid. It prevents spotting and enhances drying. The rinse aid breaks the bond between the water molecules and dishes, causing water to sheet off of your dishware.

3. Use the heat feature. The more heat, the better the drying. Depending on your dishwasher, you may have the option to add heat during the washing, rinsing, or drying cycle.

4. Open the dishwasher door a few inches as soon as the cycle ends. This allows trapped moist air to escape.

5.Empty the bottom rack first. Water collects on concave surfaces, such as mugs and glasses, that belong upside down on the top rack. Empty the lower rack first to avoid spilling water onto the contents of the bottom rack.

Solution : Float Switch

The float switch is a safety device that turns the dishwasher off if the water level gets too high. If the float switch is defective, the dishwasher may not turn on, or it may not fill with water properly.

To test the float switch, use a multimeter to test for continuity. If the reading is infinite, the float switch is defective and will need to be replaced.

Defective Whirlpool Dishwasher Parts

What if you find your Whirlpool dishwasher heated dry not working correctly? Like many common dishwasher problems, a defective part could be responsible.

The following part failures could be why your Whirlpool dishwasher leaves dishes wet, requiring professional service:

  • Vent: On some models, a Whirlpool dishwasher vent opens and closes to allow moist air to exit the dishwasher. If the vent doesnt open properly, this moist air will linger, leaving dishes wet.
  • Vent fan motor: Dishwashers with a vent also utilize a fan to help expel moist air. If the fan blades dont turn easily by hand or the fan motor fails multimeter testing, its typically defective.
  • Heating element: A failed heating element wont heat the air inside the dishwasher, preventing water from dissipating. If the heating element shows no continuity with multimeter testing, it has likely failed.

Troubleshooting: Whirlpool Dishwasher Won’t Dry Dishes

Whirlpool dishwashers have a heat dry option. Used in conjunction with a rinse aid, this option will effectively dry dishes after they have been washed. The rinse aid allows water to drain off dishes during the final rinse and prevents pooling.

If the heat dry option does not perform as intended, troubleshoot the appliance to determine the problem and correct it.

  • Check the rinse aid indicator beside the rinse aid dispenser cap. If the indicator window is clear, refill the dispenser. The dishwasher will retain moisture and the heat dry option will not perform properly without rinse aid. Turn the dispenser cap clockwise and lift it up to remove it. Pour rinse aid into the dispenser until the indicator appears full. Place the dispenser cap over the dispenser and turn it counterclockwise to tighten it.

  • Load the dishes properly so that all dishes can drain after the rinse cycle. Do not overload the dishwasher. Towel-dry plastic dishes because they will not dry completely during the dry cycle.

  • Select the heated dry option on the dishwasher. The air-dry and energy-saving dry options will not perform as well as the heated dry.

  • What To Do When Your Whirlpool Dishwasher Leaves Dishes Wet

Modern dishwashers effectively use different drying methods to ensure that water is removed after a wash cycle ends. Most are so proficient that often simple changes to your use and care can improve performance when your Whirlpool dishwasher leaves dishes wet. Heres what you can do to optimize drying and minimize lingering moisture.

    Dishwasher Rinse Aid Improves Drying

Though rinse aid is often advertised as making dishes sparkle, its essential for proper drying. Rinse aid is a liquid additive that alters the structure of water droplets, enabling them to run off dishes and glasses with greater ease. This improves drying and lessens streaking and residue.

Consult your user manual to determine how much rinse aid to add per load or if your dispenser can hold enough rinse aid for multiple loads. Some models also have adjustable dispensers that allow you to increase the amount of rinse aid to improve drying.
