If You Need A Replacement Now
Head to an independent dealer first. Independents often can match prices at big-box stores and have a bead on supply thats at least as good as what the major chains have. And because they typically dont depend on third-party delivery services, they can often be more exact on when youll get your machine. They also can offer perks such as in-house service or a loaner while you wait for your new appliance.
Hone your search on big-box-store websites. If you want to shop at a major chain, take advantage of any search tools that let you quickly find whats in stock locally and available for delivery now.
Consider substitutions. When we recently researched options for Bosch dishwashersmany of which do well in CRs testswe found that a popular stainless steel model couldnt be delivered for three weeks from the online retailer Appliance Connection. But a similar model, for $100 more, was ready to be shipped right away.
Can Any Dishwasher Dry Plastic
When we mention good or bad drying performance, were talking about how well a dishwasher can dry plastic. Metal, glass, and ceramic almost always come out perfectly dry .
Getting plastic dry is a tougher task, especially in dishwashers that have a passive, no-added-heat drying system . One article from The New York Timess science section explains the struggle to dry plastic in detail. But the gist of it is that plastic is a poor conductor of heat, and water tends to form droplets on plastic, both of which make it harder for water to evaporate.
Your results will depend on the type of plastic , whether you use a rinse aid , and your dishwashers drying system.
Lets dig into those drying systems. The most straightforward, classic type, used by something like half of all current dishwashers, simply bakes the dishes dry after it finishes the washing. These models simply heat up the tub with a ceramic heating element, like a weak oven. This function is commonly called heated dry.
Heated dry isnt quite a foolproof way to ensure bone-dry dishes. In our tests, we always found residual moisture unless we used a rinse aid. Even then, the thinnest plastic cups and containers still had a little dribble left over.
The other heated-dry downside: If a piece of plastic slips through the racks and onto the heating element, youre stuck with a hard-to-clean, acrid-smelling mess.
Appliance Shortages And Longer Wait Times Means Challenges For Consumers And Retailers
While we are slowing seeing things return to normal socially after the pandemic, its another story for many businesses that are now facing another challenge: longer wait times to get the product to supply their customers need.
Tom Barber, owner of Barber & Haskill, your one-stop appliance and mattress store in Midland, said that wait times for certain appliances is into spring of 2023, and currently, theyre waiting on 4,500 appliances. Products like fridges, stoves and dishwashers used to come within days, now its months.
Barber explains that early in the pandemic when everything shut down, so did manufacturing. However, they quickly realized that people were still going to need appliances, fridges were still going to break and that the demand wasnt going to dry up.
We were sitting on a bunch of appliances in our warehouse so we were fine for the first little while and but when that was sold, suddenly there was no supply, he said.
Mid-pandemic, when manufacturing began to start up slowly with precautions like social distancing and frequent cleaning protocols, caused production to be lower than normal.
Today, the industry still finds itself trying to catch up. Barber said the current issues of slower shipping of goods, along with inflation and the current labour shortages, are causing major delays with the appliances and the parts they need for service and repair, which is frustrating for them and their customers.

Bosch Shortages To Continue Into 2022
According to our industry insiders working in the purchasing departments of some of the largest appliance retailers in the country, Bosch availability issues aren’t going away anytime soon. Stock will be very limited moving into 2022 and potentially will be worse than it was in 2021. Anticipate longer than normal lead times on backorders of the following dishwasher models:
-
800 Series Dishwashers – Approximately 9 months out on backorders
-
500 Series Dishwashers – Approximately 6-9 months out
-
100 Series Dishwashers – Approximately 1-2 months out
In positive news, some Bosch refrigeration is in stock. 500 series refrigerators are in-stock in stainless and black stainless options at many of our preferred retailers, and counter-depth versions are about 3 weeks out for most backorders.

Buy Something That Is Already In Stock Or A Brand That Is Shipping That Particular Appliance Regularly

While there are delays in appliance shipping, Barber said each brand is different. For example, Bosch may have delays with their dishwashers but their fridges are readily available.
So, if you need a certain appliance right away, he suggests either keeping your old fridge until your order comes in or buying from a retailer that has it in stock.

Bosch Dishwasher Wait List Experience
So the old dishwasher died and I was told by my local appliance store that the model I want is out of stock with 35 people ahead of me. They don’t know if they’ll get enough in the next 10/1 shipment to fill those orders. Other Bosch models have similar issues with dates into late November. Just wondering who might have recent experience with being on such a list and how long it actually took before you got the Bosch dishwasher you ordered.

I ordered my Bosch 800 series dishwasher specifically because of the water protection that it offered. I placed in the order on 7/21/2021. I was told it would take 60 days due to backorders/delays. 60 days came and went – then it was postponed to November 2021. November came and then postponed to February 2022. Now all of this is through the holidays and I paid for the dishwasher in full at the time of the order. So February arrives and now it’s postponed to May 2022. In May I check again and the model has been discontinued. Bosch discontinued a model with orders against it since July 2021. It gets better. I am offered the “upgraded model” at no additional cost with the condition that I wait until September 2022. I didn’t really have a lot of choices at this point because now all other models had significant backorder. Well as Gomer would say, “Surprise, surprise, surprise” here we are in late September 2022 and I learn that it will be June of 2023. What company does this?
What You Can Do
What does this mean for Presidents Day sales? The bargains on appliances are likely to range around 15 percent, says Jordan Carter, an analyst covering large appliances for Gap Intelligence, a market-research company. Thats not as high as they were pre-pandemic but an improvement over last year, she says.
There are trends suggesting that the 2022 Presidents Day sales period will offer better and more discounts than the same period in 2021, Carter says.
Keep your eyes on large appliances by the Korean-based manufacturers Samsung and LG, Carter says, because youre likely to find more and higher discounts on their large appliances than whats available from other manufacturers. Indeed, we found a highly rated 33-inch LG refrigerator on sale at several retailers at around $1,500, a discount of 29 percent.
Even without a big price break, you can always try negotiating other aspects of your purchase, such as fees for delivery, installation and disposal, and associated parts like hoses and electric cords. Some of our independents are doing that, Miele says. Our guys want the business, so theyre going to make sure the customers are happy.
Heres a breakdown of simple tactics, whether you need a replacement right away or you can make do for a bit. In either case, check out our third annual Appliance Brand Reliability Rankings for brands to focus on. And consider the advice we compiled late last year on shopping for an appliance during a shortage, which still applies.

Try To Focus On Features Instead Of Matching Appliances
Barber said theyre having frequent conversation with their customers about this option because its very difficult to get a package set of the same brand appliances.
Focus on the features means being flexible and basing your appliance purchase on what you need rather than the brand or everything matching perfectly, because whats most important right now is getting the product you need.

The Dirty Truth About Filters And Food Grinders
All dishwashers have filters that trap loose food particles inside the tub. Some dishwashers also have a grinder behind the filter that can annihilate any chunks of food large enough to clog the drain in the extremely unlikely case that they slip through the filter. Either system works well, and we recommend both types. But a grinder is kind of a gimmick, and most people will be perfectly happy with a simpler, quieter, filter-only dishwasher.
One common concern weve heard is that filter-only models dont clean as well as dishwashers with grinders and need much more unpleasant hands-on maintenance.
Theres a kernel of truth here: You do need to remove and rinse most filters under running water from time to time to maintain the dishwashers performance . Starchy, greasy gunk builds up and eventually clogs the filter. If you put a lot of starchy soils into your machine and use non-enzymatic detergent and have hard water, you might have to rinse the filter as often as every few weeks.
But realistically, most people should be able to get away with rinsing their filters as little as twice a year, because filters tend to stay clean enough on their own. Enzymatic detergents weaken the structure of the toughest types of soils . All of those pre-softened foods that are caught in the filter eventually get shredded in its fine mesh as the wash water circulates through the machine. The remnants eventually get flushed down the drain.
If Your Dishwasher Still Sucks Try A Better Detergent
When it comes to cleaning, good detergent is more important than a good dishwasher. Every dishwasher basically works the same way, but detergents can behave very differently. A cheap gel like Palmolive Eco Lemon Splash has far fewer ingredients than a top-of-the-line detergent tab like Finish Quantum.
If leftover food is your main problem, make sure youre using a detergent with enzymes. Most gels do not contain any enzymes , whereas nearly all powders, tabs, and packs do.
The enzymes in dish detergent are typically produced from bacteria . Enzymes are also environmentally friendly because they biodegrade quickly in water. The most common kinds of enzyme used in dishwasher detergents are amylases, which break down starch, and proteases, which work on proteins. Its very similar to what happens in your stomach, said Jill Franke, an engineer and product research group leader at Procter & Gamble, the maker of Cascade. A few of our sources also said that enzymes might actually work better if you skip the pre-rinse, because you leave extra gunk for the enzymes to cling tothey might do a better job dissolving thin, filmy residue this way.
A couple of other possibilities to consider, if better cleaning products dont do the job on their own:

Why Are Dishwashers Backordered
On the supply side, global factory closures due to COVID-19 outbreaks have created intermittent shortages of crucial parts against a backdrop of high demand for raw materials. Things have gotten a little better from the fall, and there are still refrigerators, dishwashers, stoves, washers and dryers to be had.
How To Use Your Dishwasherthe Modern Way

Heres how to make the most of your dishwasher in 2021.
Dont bother pre-rinsing: Seriously. Most people still pre-rinse, but modern dishwashers and detergents are designed to clean dishes that are actually dirty. All dishwashers have mesh filters that catch food, so you dont have to worry about your machine getting clogged, or gross stuff redepositing on your plates. Every dishwasher and detergent brand and every independent expert weve talked to says that pre-rinsing is unnecessary, and so does the Environmental Protection Agency. Some of our sources said you might even get better results without a pre-rinse because of the way modern enzymatic detergents work. At the very least, you save a bunch of water and energy, keep a little extra cash in your wallet, and get back hours of time.
Use a detergent with enzymes, plus a rinse aid, and prepare to experiment: Enzymes help break up tough soils that cheap detergents cant. Theyre also better for the environment than phosphate detergents . Powders, tablets, and pods almost always include enzymes, but many gels do not . Rinse aid is a liquid that goes into the hatch next to the main detergent tray. The dishwasher dispenses a few milliliters of this stuff into the final rinse, and it helps dishes, especially plastic ones, dry more thoroughly and reduces or prevents chalky water spots or hazy films.

Are Bosch Dishwashers On Backorder
Are Bosch Dishwashers On Backorder. Many stores don’t know exactly what they have in inventory. Shortages have hit all kinds of major appliances:
The only thing we can get from bosch quickly is just their. Due to global materials shortages, and other logistical issues, we are seeing longer than usual lead times in delivering parts. We have only recently been notified that the range and dishwasher is getting drop shipped to the shipping company for delivery.
Ge: Our Second Runner
We nearly recommended GE dishwashers as our runner-up instead of the Maytag 7959. Machines from the two brands are similar in a lot of ways, with heated drying, a food grinder, great cleaning performance , decent racks, and quiet-enough performance. We tested a couple of GE models, and the GE GDP665SYNFS was our favorite. It has a third rack, plus bottle-washing nozzles built into the tines on the middle rack, a feature that we think is pretty cool even as we recognize how gimmicky it is.
In making our picks, we ended up passing over GE because its aggregate reliability data is less favorable, and its prices tend to be higher than Whirlpool and Maytags on a per-feature basis. But if theres something you like about a GE or GE Profile dishwashermaybe youre getting a great GE stove in one of the finishes that only GE sells, and you want your dishwasher to matchit can be a fine choice.
Wed steer clear of the really low-end GE models because they have lousy owner ratings.

What About Appliance Repairs
At Repair Clinic, an online parts retailer that also matches consumers with repair pros, the wait for service is currently seven to 10 days, according to Chris Zeisler, the websites technical services supervisor. That hasnt changed much since last spring.
And if you can get a technician to your home to diagnose your appliance, you may find you have another wait, for partsif theyre available. The parts that are getting caught up now in the supply chain are the control boards, because of the chip shortage, Zeisler says.
Some owners of very expensive refrigerators are waiting six to eight months for partsusually those circuit boards, Zeisler reports more complex machines can have more than one of them. In the interim, he says, those consumers are probably using the garage or basement fridge, or getting something in the used market.
The upshot: You might have to compromise by finding a temporary replacement, accepting generic parts, or deciding to buy a new appliance.
