How To Choose The Best Dishwasher
StyleVirtually all dishwashers are designed to fit in a space under the countertop alongside your cabinets. Most are 24 inches wide and 35 inches high but there are some 18-inch wide models available for smaller kitchens. Itâs always best to check the dimensions of your space and appliance before you buy.
You can also purchase a stand-alone or portable type, which attaches to your faucet by a hose and drains into your sink. If youâre really short on space, a countertop model might work for you. Be aware that these counter-top models only have a single rack, so donât hold many dishes.
Finish
As with all appliances, stainless steel is currently the finish of choice. However, you can find white or black models to match older appliances or black stainless steel or so called Tuscan stainless steel with a bronze tone. If youâre going with stainless steel, ask if itâs fingerprint- and smudge-resistant, especially if you have kids in the house.
The interior of the dishwasher will either be made of stainless steel or plastic. Stainless steel is more durable and if you can afford it, worth the higher price.
Cycles
Youâll find anywhere from 4 to 14 on todayâs dishwashers. Consider which programs youâll actually find useful. Most dishwashers come with an Eco program now, which is just one of 7 ways your dishwasher can save you money.

How We Tested Dishwashers And Why You Can Trust Us
When it comes to rating the best dishwashers, we do all the dirty workpun intended. First, our editors research the best brands and models on the market to get an idea of whats special, whats different, and which dishwashers have a reputation for cleaning well.
Then, because we want you to trust our judgment, we bring in the best-rated dishwashers weve seen to Revieweds Cambridge-based labs for hands-on and scientific testing. Yeswe do have a chief scientist on staff!
Testing dishwashers is obviously a dirty job filled with cheese-crusted casserole pans and spinach puree painted plates, but we are happy to do it. When testing, we assess each dishwasher on the three major factorsperformance, features, and user experience.
We test each dishwashers three main dishwasher cycles: quick, heavy, and normal by baking nasty food and beverage stains on 15 to 20 dishes that are then loaded into the dishwasher per the manufacturer’s loading directions.
At the end of each cycle, we manually determine how much stain has been removed from each dish. Ideally, each dish is 100% clean, but that level of cleaning perfection can be harder to achieve in real life. We also look at redeposit, which is when water jets remove bits of food from one dish that get stuck on a second dish.
We also look at a dishwashers ability to dry dishes and how it gets this job done. Customers expect their dishes to be dry, so we penalize the dishwasher every time a dish comes out wet.
How To Use Your Dishwasherthe Modern Way
Heres how to make the most of your dishwasher in 2021.
Dont bother pre-rinsing: Seriously. Most people still pre-rinse, but modern dishwashers and detergents are designed to clean dishes that are actually dirty. All dishwashers have mesh filters that catch food, so you dont have to worry about your machine getting clogged, or gross stuff redepositing on your plates. Every dishwasher and detergent brand and every independent expert weve talked to says that pre-rinsing is unnecessary, and so does the Environmental Protection Agency. Some of our sources said you might even get better results without a pre-rinse because of the way modern enzymatic detergents work. At the very least, you save a bunch of water and energy, keep a little extra cash in your wallet, and get back hours of time.
Use a detergent with enzymes, plus a rinse aid, and prepare to experiment: Enzymes help break up tough soils that cheap detergents cant. Theyre also better for the environment than phosphate detergents . Powders, tablets, and pods almost always include enzymes, but many gels do not . Rinse aid is a liquid that goes into the hatch next to the main detergent tray. The dishwasher dispenses a few milliliters of this stuff into the final rinse, and it helps dishes, especially plastic ones, dry more thoroughly and reduces or prevents chalky water spots or hazy films.

Dishwasher Racks And Rack Placement
This is an easily overlooked feature but it has a significant impact on your day-to-day dishwashing. A new trend is the small third flat rack at the top that can accommodate extra silverware, kitchen utensils and other smaller items. They are typically in addition to an upright silverware holder housed in the bottom rack. If you find yourself filling or overfilling a standard silverware holder on a regular basis, this feature will allow you to wash everything and keep things neat and tidy.
The trendy third rack provides another place to load silverware, kitchen utensils and other small items.
Many dishwashers also now have adjustable racks to accommodate dishes and pans of odd or abnormally large sizes. If you’ve ever struggled with fitting large items into your dishwasher, you should consider a model with adjustable racks.

The Model Number Tells All
If you get confused, the best way to learn more about the dishwasher youre buying is by taking a look at the model number.
500 and 300 Series dishwashers feature pushbutton controls, while the 800 Series has touch controls.
Though model numbers may look randomly generated, every SKU tells a story. For example, lets examine the SHE33T55UC. Just from looking at this number, you can tell its a 24-inch model with external controls in the 300 Series, with a stainless finish. How?
- The initial S tells us that the product is a dishwasher.
- If the second letter is an H, its a standard 24-inch model. If its a G, its a 24-inch ADA compliant model. If its a P, the dishwasher is a compact, ADA-compliant 18-inch model.
- The third letter tells us what the handle and display combination is. An E, for instance, means external controls. X means the dishwasher has a bar handle, while a P means the dishwasher has a pocket handle. A V means the dishwasher is panel ready.
- The fourth digit tells us what series the dishwasher is in. 3 = 300 Series. A = Ascenta, 5 = 500 Series, 8 = 800 Series, and P = Benchmark.
- The eighth digit tells what color the machine is. 5 = Stainless, 6 = Black, 2 = White, and 3 = Panel Ready.
Simple enough, right? Armed with this information, you can find the right dishwasher for your needs.

What Is A Smart Dishwasher
Smart dishwashers connect via WiFi to an app on your phone, allowing you to control them remotely through that app. You no longer have to pay through the nose for them but Andy Trigg suggests approaching these with an air of caution.
“Think carefully before paying extra for smart features,” says Trigg. “You should never run a dishwasher when no one is present in the house. They are a potential fire risk. If you can see that there are genuinely useful functions on a smart dishwasher then you will no doubt be happy to pay extra for one.”
How To Empty A Dishwasher Full Of Water
If youre replacing a still working dishwasher then start by running the first few seconds of a cycle to pump out any remaining water in the sump. This means fewer drips and less mess during the rest of the removal process.
If your dishwashers not draining the first step is to look for a blocked filter. Take the plates, baskets and racks out of the dishwasher and reach into the soupy depths to pull out the filter. Then give it a good scrub under the tap. You should also reach into the bottom of the tub where the filter goes to clear any large food particles that could be causing a blockage. Put it back and try running another cycle to see if this has fixed the problem.
If that doesnt solve things then youre going to need to bail the dishwasher out by hand. Grab some kitchen sponges or cloths, some towels and a cup, bowl or other vessel you can use to bail out the water. Put a towel down on the floor to soak up any spills, then start bailing the contents of your dishwasher into a sink or bucket. Once the water levels are too low to bail, use the kitchen sponges and towels to soak up the remaining liquid then scoop any residual solids out by hand.
Now you can start disconnecting the machine but remember, theres probably still water in the drain hose, so be careful pulling that out. Once youre done, mop up any spills with your towels and throw them straight into the washing machine for a well-deserved wash theyve earned it.

Blomberg And Beko: Next Time
Beko, a mainstream European appliance brand, has been a fringe brand in the US under the Blomberg banner for about a decade. As weve understood the situation, the dishwashers work well, but theyve been easy to buy only in certain regions of the US, so weve never recommended them. But the company looks to be expanding its presence, and well try to get one of its machines the next time we test dishwashers.
Dba: What Does It Mean

dBAs are a different version of decibels used by manufacturers to measure the dishwashers’ noise level. dBA measures not only sound intensity but also the response of the human ear. The human ear perceives frequencies differently, and some frequencies will not have the same effect as others, despite their intensity. dBA takes this into account and provides a better idea of how noise level actually affects a person.

What Is The Average Lifespan Of A Dishwasher
Manufacturers will tell you a dishwasher should last about 10 years but you might expect to get a few more years out of it than that if you don’t overuse the machine and take some quick steps to keep it running smoothly.
There are things you can do to extend the life of your dishwasher like scraping off solid foods from plates and pans before loading, cleaning the filter monthly and never putting vinegar inside your dishwasher, as CNET’s Katie Teague explains.
Should I Get A Dishwasher Warranty And How Important Is It
Your dishwasher should last you about 10 years without requiring any major repairs but, of course, a warranty is a good thing to have if something goes wrong soon after you take it home. Most warranties from the major brands outlined here cover replacement parts and labor for one year from the date you purchased it and are designed to protect you should there be a major manufacturer flaw in your model.
It is worth noting that Maytag appliances include a generous, limited 10-year warranty that covers certain replacement parts after the first year warranty expires. Meanwhile, you can potentially extend the efficacy and lifespan of your dishwasher by taking care of it, with CNET’s guide to how to clean your dishwasher.

Results From Yale Appliances Annual Dishwasher Reliability Report
Yale Appliance is a Boston-based, family-owned company that sells and services appliances. Theyve been in business since 1923.
Yale issues annual reports on appliance reliability, covering dishwashers, refrigerators, washing machines, and more. The report data comes from the companys firsthand experience servicing these appliances.
The key metric in the report is service rate, which is calculated by dividing the number of service calls by the number of units sold. For example, if Yale sold 10,000 Bosch dishwashers in a given year and received 1,000 service calls for those Bosch dishwashers sold that year, the service rate would be 10%.
Before I show you Yales data for dishwashers, its important to understand these caveats:
- Low sales for a particular brand: In a given year, a brand may experience low sales for many reasons. When fewer units are sold, the service rate is more volatile .
- Yales inventory: Yale does not sell or service every appliance brand. Over time, theyve settled on offering and maintaining select brands.
- Availability: Low stock due to supply chain issues can impact service rates.
- Lack of Use: Developers often buy Whirlpool dishwashers for large apartment buildings and multi-unit condominiums. Many units sit unused for months or even years, lowering service rates for that brand.
- Service Rate Varies by Model: Yales data looks at each brand as a whole. However, specific models are more reliable than others.

Washing And Drying Performance
You guessed it: A dishwasher has to wash and dry effectively. A fancy model with all the latest tech innovations isn’t worth very much if it doesnât clean dishes. For starters, a good dishwasher needs to have enough wash cycles and options to handle all kinds of dirty dishes and various levels of messes.
A quick wash cycle gives you a real advantage, particularly since the most energy-efficient cycles these days can take as long as two hours to finish up. Sensor wash counts as another plus since it automatically adjusts the length of time a load will take based on the soil level and number of dishes.
Youâll also want to choose a dishwasher with good quality nozzles and spray arms to distribute water around the whole tub efficiently. Solid drying performance matters just as much, of course. Nothing’s more annoying than having to dry all of your dishes by hand. Dishwashers employ one of two main drying techniques:
Other helpful drying features include auto-opening doors at the end of each cycle and integrated fans that help reduce moisture. Some manufacturers also give you the option to run a final, gentle heat cycle to dry up any puddles Bosch calls this CrystalDry.
