Faulty Water Inlet Valve
Water inlet valves are designed to allow water into a faucet. They are installed between the hot and cold water supply lines and are controlled by a lever or push button. If the water inlet valve does not function properly, water will not flow from the spout of the faucet. This could lead to flooding in the house if the problem is not corrected immediately. To fix the faulty water inlet valve, turn off the main water supply line to the house. Remove the screws holding the valve assembly in place. Disconnect the wires connected to the valve. Replace the valve assembly and tighten the screws. Turn on the water supply line and test the valve to see if it works correctly.
Action #3 Examine The Door Switch
To make sure a door switch is not malfunctioning and indicating your dishwasher is open when its closed, make sure its not damaged. Heres how you can manually assess the state of the dishwasher door switch:
- Unplug the dishwasher.
- Look at the top of the appliances door and find the latch on the door panel.
- Remove the door latch for full assessment and testing.
- Use a multimeter to test the probes of the component. Keep the actuator at rest in such a state, the multimeter reading should be infinity. If thats the case, press the actuator the multimeter value should change to zero.
- If theres a mismatch between the results of the test and those described above, consider a door switch replacement.
Dishwasher Not Filling With Water
If your dishwasher is not filling with water, there are a few easy things you can do to resolve this issue.
Check the Filter and Flood Float:
-
Most 2015 and newer dishwasher models have a flood float that can be checked and even replaced by the owner, if needed: Dishwasher – Flood Float.
-
All other models will require service if there is a concern with the flood float.
Drain Issues:
If the dishwasher is not draining properly, it could prevent new water from entering the dishwasher.
-
On models with a removable ultra-fine and fine filter, take out the filters and clean them. Dishwasher – How to Clean Fine and Ultra Fine Filters

New Installation:
If this is a new dishwasher being used for first time:
Pour 1 quart of water into the dishwasher. This will lubricate the pump seals and eliminate rattling and squealing.
Allow the dishwasher to run for up to 10 minutes.
Check to see if water has entered the tub.
Mechanical Turn-to-Start Models:
On models with a turn-to-start knob, there might be a slight delay of up to 3 minutes from when you start the dishwasher until the water valve turns on and water enters the dishwasher. This is normal.
-
If water has not entered the dishwasher after 5 minutes or more, the timer knob may have been advanced too far and the first fill was bypassed. If this is the case, the next time you start the dishwasher, turn the knob just enough to hear the motor start.

Check The Drain Valve And Solenoid
If you still havent identified the reason why your dishwasher is not filling with water, the next step is to check the drain valve and solenoid. Not all dishwashers have a drain valve that is regulated by a drain solenoid, so youll need to check your user manual to ensure your washer does. When the solenoid becomes faulty, the drain valve will fail, and your dishwasher will not be able to fill up with water when you turn it onto a wash cycle.
This is how to check the drain valve:
Guilty As Charged: The Water Inlet Valve

Repair professionals understand that just a few components are responsible for most appliance problems.
With dishwashers, the water inlet valve is always a prime suspect. When your dishwasher goes rogue, expect to find the inlet valve in the subsequent police lineup.
Signs pointing to a faulty inlet valve include:
- Leaks that fill the dishwasher when its off.
- Inadequate water for a cycle. The dishwasher fills too slowly or not all.
- A bad inlet valve can lead to leaks from the dishwasher onto the kitchen floor. This is potentially hazardous.
- Most inlet valve malfunctions stem from a defective seal or solenoid failure.

Check The Float Switch
The next step is to check the float switch. This component is in your dishwasher to make sure the right amount of water flows into it during a wash cycle. If the switch stops working as intended, your dishwasher might not fill up with the right amount of water.
This is how to check the float switch:
Reason #4 Water Supply Kinks
What you thought was a faulty dishwasher not getting water, might not be the appliance at all. Before jumping to conclusions and rushing to get a new one, examine the water supply line that sends a stream of water to the device. It may either be damaged or bent.
In the case of the latter, you are in the clear straightening the supply line will solve your problem. If the supply line is damaged youll need to fix or replace it. If your GE model includes a kickplate, you may remove the access panel by unthreading the screws in the bottom left corner, and you may discover two buttons in the bottom right corner. By pressing the first button on your GE dishwasher, you will be able to reset it.
Reason #3 Drain Solenoid Malfunctions
The drain solenoid is a dishwasher component responsible for draining excess water from the appliance. If it activates too quickly or is malfunctioning, the float switch activation can be triggered, resulting in a dishwasher not filling with enough water.
To check the performance of the solenoid, access and listen to the drain valve at the start of the wash cycle. If the solenoid is broken or malfunctioning, you will either hear water drain out as fast as it flows in, or hear it trigger the float and not hear water flowing into the tub, you have no other choice but to replace it.

Test The Water Inlet Valve
Attach your test cord or battery pack to the valve. If water flows freely through it, the inlet valve isnt causing your dishwasher problems.
But if the water flows slowly or not at all, the inlet valve may need cleaning. And if its free of debris yet still restricting water flow, you have a broken valve that must be replaced.
Reason #2 Dirt On Valve Screens

To get into the dishwasher, water passes through inlet valves. If the stream of water is weak, unevenly distributed, or absent altogether, its likely that dirt and debris have clogged the filler valve screen filters.
Disassembling a portable dishwasher and cleaning the inlet screen will, in most cases, solve the problem. However, if the valve screen is damaged, you need to replace it.

Dishwasher Hums But No Water
A dishwasher that hums but does not fill with water is usually caused by either a defective water inlet valve or float switch. If your dishwashers water inlet fill line features a flood-safe hose, this may also cause the problem. If the dishwasher has not been used for over a week, this can also cause the issue, as the dishwasher pump seals may have dried out.
The first thing to check is that the water supply is turned on to the dishwasher. Most households have a faucet under the sink that needs to be turned counterclockwise to allow water to flow into the dishwasher. If you live in a cold climate, another consideration is that the water supply line may have frozen.

Other Reasons Why Your Dishwasher Wont Fill
It might be that the water supply, inlet valve and float switch are operating normally and your dishwasher has a different type of problem.
- If your dishwasher has a leak then the anti-flood protection might be activated, which will prevent the inlet valve from opening. Remove the plinth below the dishwasher door and check for any water in the base.
- There maybe a blockage between the pump and the spray arms, or the spray arms themselves might be blocked. Try removing the spray arms and whilst you clean them run the dishwasher without the arms attached to try and clear any blockages.
- Your dishwasher has a switch to detect if the door is open . If the switch is faulty or otherwise not functioning properly then the dishwasher wont fill. If you suspect an issue with the door switch youll normally need to remove the inner door panel to gain access.
A Problem With The Hose Filter

Most Bosch dishwashers have an installed special filter inside of the hose end to prevent sediments from the water supply pipe from reaching the interior of the dishwasher.
This is intended to keep the dishwasher in optimal condition, but sometimes this filter clogs up and needs replacement. To prevent this issue in future.

Solenoid And Drain Valve
The valve that allows water to drain out is regulated by a solenoid. A faulty solenoid will not allow the water to drain out, which in turn may prevent the washer from refilling.
This is another device accessible via the lower access panel. The drain valve should be located close to the motor. Check that the near gate arm mechanism can move up and down freely and is not hindered.
Once you remove the solenoid, check it using the same method as you would the other switches mention above. However, this time you are looking for a meter reading of around 40 ohms. Anything other than this signals that you need a new solenoid.
What Usually Breaks On A Dishwasher
Dishwashers are very important appliances in our homes. It cleans dishes efficiently and effectively. But sometimes, we face problems while using it. One such problem is the float switch. This is the part of the appliance that detects the level of water in the washing tub. If the water level is low, the float switch sends a signal to the motor to stop spinning. This stops the flow of water from the tub into the drain pipe. In case of a faulty float switch, the water continues to flow even after the wash cycle is completed. This results in flooding of the washer and damage to the machine. So, how do we check whether the float switch is working properly? Here are a few tips to help you figure out if your float switch is not functioning properly.1. Check if the water level indicator light is blinking continuously. If it is, then the float switch is not working properly.2. Turn off the power supply to the appliance. Then open the door of the machine. Remove the access panel and remove the screws holding the float switch assembly. Now lift the float switch assembly and observe if the water level indicator lamp is flashing. If it is flashing, then the float switch assembly needs to be replaced.
