The Best Non Toxic Dishwasher Detergent For Your Eco Friendly Home
Dishes: Everyones got to do them. If youd rather load up the dishwasher, it might be time to question what detergent youre using to get your dishes clean.
Did you know in the USA, cleaning companies arent legally required to disclose the ingredients in their products? This is a huge issue, considering many of our products, including dishwasher detergent, get into our waterways, where they can harm aquatic ecosystems.
Cleaning products dont have to be toxic to work. For more info check out the blog post 15 All-Natural and Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products.
For me, the best non toxic dishwasher detergent is going to be derived from natural and organic ingredients that biodegrade so it doesnt damage the environment.
The dishwasher detergents on this list are efficient, safe to use for both humans and environment, and have thoughtful packaging.
What Makes These The Best Dishwasher Detergents
Before we get into the dishwasher detergent, its important to discuss what makes these the best on the market. We all want a dishwasher detergent thats tough on grease, but at what cost?
Is the detergent contributing to waterway pollution? How safe is it for human health? Is it using innovative packaging and non-toxic ingredients? These are the questions we need to start asking.

Ingredients To Avoid In Dishwasher Detergent:
There are a select few ingredients you never want to see in your dishwasher detergent. If you see any of these, its a red flag! None of the products listed here contain these ingredients.
Here are the ingredients you should avoid.
- fragrance: Artificial fragrances can cause allergic reactions, chemical sensitivities, and even rashes.
- dyes: These add zero cleaning power and can cause allergies and rashes many are proven carcinogens and almost all are endocrine disruptors too.
- phosphates: When these enter waterways they cause eutrophication, mineral poisoning that causes high die-off of marine animals.
- sodium hypochlorite: Otherwise known as bleach, which is corrosive to eyes and skin, can cause throat irritation, gastric burns, and fluid in the lungs.
- polyacrylates: These contain acrylic acid, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, and methacrylic acid. Acrylic acid alone is known for causing eye damage, severe burns, and being toxic to aquatic life.
- benzisothiazolinone: An eye, lung, and skin irritant as well as a environmental pollutant thats harmful to fish.
- methylsothiazolinone: Linked to inhalation toxicity, allergic reactions and possible neurotoxicity.

The plus side: these pods are fragrance-free and phosphate, phthalate, and chlorine-free. The downside: according to the reviews, the potency of these pods is tepid at best. If you want a cleaner thats eco-friendly or powerful, its probably best to go with either of the other two retailers on this one.
Verdict: Its cheap, its effective, and its built to last: Go with the Target Smartly option to clean your dishes.

Rating Natural Dishwasher Detergents
Through two dishwashers already in this house, heres the scoop on the other natural dishwasher detergents weve tried, as well as the results of EWGs new household cleaners ratings list .
I list the ingredients, too, which sound a lot less natural than many other things I read, but many of them are explained at EWG or here. Im not sure if these detergents are really, truly natural and non-toxic, but I am certain theyre loads better than the conventional dishwasher detergent, which can be some of the most caustic cleaning agents you have and most harmful to the environment, too.
I did find that short wash wasnt cutting it with the new dishwasher and the natural detergents. Sad to see that energy-saver as a thing of the past, but the sensor cycle is supposed to only run as much as it absolutely needs to, so Im at least pleased with that.
Funny note: when we were shopping dishwashers, there was a Bosch company rep at the little store in our town. He gave his detergent recommendation, and when I asked about natural brands, he put on a permasmile, raised his eyebrows, and basically declined to comment but his skeptics grin said it all. No promises, he said.
Which Works Best: Dishwasher Pods Or Powders
It goes without saying that cleaning pods of all kinds have gone through a sort of let’s say PR hiccup since kids started daring each other to eat the things to impress their friends on TikTok. “Tide pod challenge,” aside, dishwasher pods are a modern way to switch up your dishwashing routine for a mess-free experience.
But just how much do these pods differ from powder and gel dishwashing detergent, and which one is really better? We talked to a scientist at Cascade to get the answers.

The magazines tests also showed that:
Gels arent very effective. Enzymes arent usually compatible with gel formulations. Only one enzyme detergent tested Cascade Complete, which at 35 cents per load was one of the most expensive in the lineup is a gel. Although very good, it scored lowest among all enzyme products.
A familiar brand name isnt always a top performer, while some store brands can be standouts.
Green products can get dishes clean. Most dishwasher detergents contain phosphates, which enhance cleaning ability. Phosphates also have a reputation for being environmentally harmful because they promote the growth of algae. But enzyme-containing powders from Trader Joes , Seventh Generation and Ecover Natural are phosphate-free.
In tests gauging how well detergents removed a caked-on puree of sticky, starchy foods, two products provided the best combination of performance and price. Great Value and Electrasol Dual Action Tabs excelled at cleaning and at preventing dirt from settling back on dishes. Both CR Best Buys, they cost 9 and 13 cents, respectively, per load.
Great Value is an excellent choice whether you have hard water or soft because it minimized hard-water spots and prevented glasses washed in soft water from looking filmy. Electrasol Dual Action Tabs also minimized soft-water filminess, but left some hard-water spotting.

My Rating: Dont Bother With Biokleen
I tried tackling buildup with some of the , but nothing helped. Right around that time, we sold our house, so I was excited to get to start over with a new dishwasher.
Guess what? Biokleen still didnt work satisfactorily. It was as much of a disaster in the new house as the old. Time to strike out anew! Update : My mother also had splendid luck with Biokleens powder. She has softened well water and Ive had fairly hard city water in both houses she pre-rinses thoroughly and I refuse to. But I thought I should be fair to Biokleen and let you know that maybe it will work with some water! Although she did tell me that when people started having trouble she still had an old one and switched to Ecover powder with great success rather than risk the new one, even though the company says they didnt reformulate. I would love to hear YOUR experiences in the comments!

Not Our Favorite Dishwashing Detergents
These products contain a greater amount of problematic ingredients of concern to humans and aquatic life. The problematic ingredients were mostly listed in the post above. Some additional brands were teetering to better, but did not disclose fragrances or surfactants and were placed here. We do not recommend any products from this list.
Natural Dish Soap Guide

Whats the best natural dish soap? Does anything really work, or does it always just feel like youre smearing grease around a pan? This guide will answer these questions, and we hope it will make choosing a natural dish soap less confusing.
Admittedly, even the best natural dish soap brands have a hard time competing with the conventional brands. The trouble with being that tough on grease is that this usually also means the product is tough on the health of whoever uses the stuffand on the aquatic life in the bodies of water where the soap ends up!
The other bad news is that many dish soaps marketed as natural nevertheless contain chemicals of concern. And while you do wash most of the product off of your dishes, some residue remains, which of course can be ingested. If you have little kids who like to help wash dishes, youll want to make sure you choose a dish soap that is truly non-toxic.
That said, I am more lenient on ingredients in dishwashing soap than, say, skin cream. Anything that goes directly on the skin and is absorbed is of course more concerning than products that you wash out.

The Best Dishwasher Pods: Cascade Complete Or Cascade Platinum
If the words #1 Brand on the label dont sway you, maybe the 68,984 Amazon reviews averaging 4.8 out of 5 stars will? Or maybe the fact that both Good Housekeeping and Consumer Reports give Cascade the top-tier rating? In our testers experiments, we found that whether the dishwasher was set to eco-friendly sensor mode or 1-hour quick wash, Cascades pods power through the worst messes, dissolving food and removing stains, like coffee, tea, and greasy, tomato-based sauces. Mugs and plastic containers look like new! Dishes and glassware come out sparkling with no spots or cloudy residue. And if you have hard water, never fear: All Cascade detergents have water softeners built in.
Cascade Complete is a consistent workhorse, but the newer and slightly more expensive Platinum is even more concentrated. Both incorporate Dawn, which is, hands-down, our favorite dish soap for greasy plates. And, as required of all other dish detergents, theyre phosphate-free.
Pods cost more per load than powder or gel about about 22 cents versus 10 cents for gel and about half that for powder but they have two big advantages. First, weve found that pods take the guesswork out of how much detergent you actually need. No figuring out halfway on a scooper pods are portioned out perfectly. Just tuck the pod in the detergent compartment, and they dissolve completely.

How Are Pods Made And How Do They Work

Like a fortune cookie and again, please don’t eat the darn things there’s a lot more to dishwasher pods than meets the eye. Dishwasher pods obviously contain dishwasher detergent, so they still function in the same way to clean your dishes, but pods are presented in a format that makes automatic dishwashing more convenient and less messy.
Most of us have loaded a dishwasher before, right? You open the door, load it up, add detergent into the dispenser and press start. Dishwasher pods take a step out of the equation. No more measuring. The water-soluble film contains premeasured liquid detergent, and when dissolved, releases the powder and/or gel that cleans your dishes.
“These pods are created with premeasured doses that are more concentrated than powder or gel detergents alone, so you know you’re getting the right amount of each ingredient in each dishwasher load,” Eberhard explains. “Furthermore, by separating the powder from the liquid top, pods like Cascade ActionPacs have the best of what each ingredient has to offer.”
When the dishwasher detergent dispenser opens, it releases the dishwasher pod into the water, and the film surrounding the pod dissolves, so all of the detergent inside can disperse into the water, Eberhard explains.

Definitely on the highest end of the spectrum, but ideal for sustainably-minded shoppers. Completely hypoallergenic and fragrance-free, its safe for use and doesnt skimp on softness, either.
Verdict: When it comes to paper goods, you want them to be recyclable and have as minimal damage on the environment as possible. While both Trader Joes and Whole Foods excel at putting sustainability at the forefront, being that the 12-pack from Trader Joes is cheaper, you should probably opt for that one.

What Is The Least
All soaps and detergents are toxic to fish. Some are more toxic than others, but what product you choose is less important than how and where you do the job. If you are using a soap or detergent, do not wash the car on a hard surface that drains to the street or a storm drain. That could allow toxic levels of chemicals to reach the nearest stream or other water body. Park the car over a permeable surface like grass that will absorb any soap or detergent and allow it to biodegrade.
You can use any carwash detergent that does not contain phosphates, or you can use a little dishwashing liquid . Use the smallest amount of cleaner that will do the job, and, when you are finished, pour the leftover soapy water down the toilet do not empty it into the street.
Dishwashing Detergents Have Improved Over The Years Yet Most Still Contain Toxic Ingredients That Disrupt The Planet
Dishwashing detergents are made with chemicals that clean dishes, soften water, prevent spotting on plates, and add fragrance. They need to be strong enough to get the crud off your dishes, but gentle enough to not damage aquatic life and yourself.
Phosphates were once the main ingredient in most dishwashing detergents. In 2010, seventeen U.S. states implemented mandatory bans on the sale of phosphates in automatic dishwasher detergent because of the concern of its adverse effects to rivers, lakes & streams. Those states were Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. Excess phosphorus leads to harmful algal blooms that kill aquatic life and plant growth. Most dishwashing detergents have removed phosphates from their formulations so they dont have to produce different formulations for different states.
However, there are still lots of problematic ingredients used in dishwashing detergent. The major problems revolve around the following issues:
Because most of the chemicals used in dishwashing detergents are washed off with hot water, the primary concern is really toxicity to aquatic organisms and that feedback loop comes back to us in the food chain.

Grab Green Automatic Dishwashing Detergent Pods
Grab Green Automatic Dishwashing Detergent Pods

As a company, Grab Green strives to produce non-harmful cleaning products that can compete in effectiveness with the most popular, conventional brand cleaners. These pods are extremely effective at removing dirt and leaving no residue on your dishes.
Overall, these are a great choice if youre looking for a dishwasher detergent that is safe for you, your family, and the environment.
Powder Detergent Vs Liquid: Which Is Better
Any detergent that doesnt contain phosphates or antibacterial ingredients should be safe for use with your septic tank, but whether you choose to opt for liquid or powder formulas is really dependent on your personal preference, although there are some key differences between the two.
As a general rule, powder dishwasher detergents tend to be more effective than liquids. Liquids can stick to dishware and on the dishwasher parts. This can interfere with the overall functioning of the machine and leave dishes with detergent residue on them after washing. Powders tend to clean dishes more effectively and are also generally more cost-effective in terms of their concentration and usage, although this isnt the case with all powders.
These days, more and more of us are reaching for tablet or pod formula dishwasher detergents. These tend to be much more convenient, although not always the most economically effective. Septic safe pods or tablets should also be completely biodegradable to reduce the risk of waste build-up in the tank.
