Dishwasher Drain Line Clog
It could be that sink water backflow into the dishwasher is not from the kitchen sink, but actually originated in the dishwasher line. This should be suspected if no other clogs seem to exist.
Food debris and grease from dishes can pass through the strainer at the bottom of the dishwasher and form sticky clumps that jam the drain line. Waste water pumped out from the dishwasher ihits the clog and then flows back into the dishwasher.
To handle this, you have to loosen the drain hose clamps to remove the hose and run a strong stream of water through it until it is clear.
Also check the dishwasher strainer. The strainer is in the floor of the dishwasher and is easily removable for periodic cleaning. Lift out the strainer and check beneath where it sits for any gunk that got through. You should be able to pull the gunk out with your fingers.
This of course raises the question debated in many households as to whether or not it is better to rinse dishes before they go into the dishwasher. If youve experienced a clog like this one, you may think the answer is to rinse. However, this could just as easily lead to a sink drain clog from accumulated food and grease. The argument for no rinsing is that pre-rinsing is a waste of water because most modern dishwashers are well equipped to handle the dirtiest dishes.
So which is correct/ The answer is simple and obvious. Whichever one your spouse thinks is right.
Attach Dishwasher Drain And Tidy Up
Attach the dishwasher drain line to the waste nib of the tailpiece. Tighten the hose clamp with a screwdriver.
Remove excess putty from lip of strainer.
Remove the aerator from the faucet and run the water full blast. Look for leaks at all connections along the supply and drain lines. In case of leaks, carefully tighten the nuts by one-eighth turns until the leak stops.
Make sure the sinks front edge is parallel to counters edge. Fill the sink with water to weigh it down and hold it tight overnight as the caulk sets.
Stopping A Leak At The Connection Point
Thankfully, there are a variety of ways to fix the potential leak. Some are easier than others. Some may even require professional intervention depending on your comfort and experience level with plumbing repair.

Water Supply And Water Pressure
You need to take into account the water supply and water pressure. If you have a lot of water going into your bathroom sink, you may need a larger drain pipe to accommodate the volume of water. Also, if you have high water pressure, you may need a larger pipe to prevent the water from back splashing out of the sink.
A 1 1/2-inch pipe can handle up to approximately three gallons per minute, while a 2-inch pipe can handle up to six gallons per minute. If you have a high water volume or high water pressure, you may need a larger drain pipe.

What Size Is The Dishwasher Supply Line
The supply line is the metallic pipe, likely made of steel, that supplies water to the dishwasher. It is connected directly to the tap while the other connects to the inlet.
Thus, it would help if you were careful not to confuse the water supply line and the inlet. Considering that the dishwasher uses principles of pressure in its operations, you must ensure that the supply line is of the recommended length and diameter.
However, your supply lines correct size depends on the main pipeline to your home. For instance, if the main pipeline is ¾ or 1 inch in diameter, its supply line size should be ¾ inch in diameter, while the other pipes should diameter approximately ½ inch.

In some cases, supply lines of higher diameter tend to cost more. However, that should not make you compromise on the correct size. Otherwise, you will have yourself to blame because of the low pressures experienced by the machine, which will result in poor performance.
Kitchen Sink Clogged Drain
A lot of food and food byproducts such as fiber and grease finds its way down kitchen sinks. Over time, drains can clog, sometimes frequently. When there is a clog in the line, water pressure in the pipes can increase and force sink water up into the dishwasher drain line.
One way to relieve the pressure is to disconnect the sink trap underneath the sink and remove the blockage. If it is not clogged there, run a snake into the waste pipe leading into the wall behind the sink. Youll need a bucket to catch the water and the clogged material that may come pouring out.
Another, easier way is to plunge the sink drain to break up the clogged material and force it along the waste line where it can move freely away. A word of caution, however. Using a plunger greatly increases the pressure in the line, which can defeat the air gap, even if there has been no backflow into your dishwasher. To be safe, the dishwasher drain hose should be clamped shut where it meets the sinks drain pipes.

Ways How To Clean Dishwasher Drain Line
Many times, your dishwashers water drains from the garbage disposal. In this case, you will need to clear your disposal often to allow the water to pass through it freely. As part of the overall installation of a dishwasher, hooking up the drain is usually pretty easy, but it’s important to understand the different options when doing so, with or without a garbage disposal.
If you are removing a dishwasher and replacing it with a new one, it is usually easiest to simply copy the same drain hookups that were used on the old dishwasher. But if you are adding a dishwasher for the first time, you may need to install a special drain fitting known as a Y-branch tailpiece to give the dirty water a place to flow into your drain system.
The different drain variations you may encounter include:
- Drain line connected through an air gap to the garbage disposal
- Drain line connected through an air gap directly to the drain
- Drain line configured in a “high loop” to the garbage disposal
- Drain line configured in a “high loop” directly to the drain
Drain Connection With Air Gap And Garbage Disposal
If an air gap fitting is used, there will be two lengths of drain hose: the factory drain hose on the dishwasher, which runs from the dishwasher to the smaller of the two tailpieces on the air gap, and a 7/8-inch hose that runs from the other tailpiece on the air gap to the dishwasher nipple on the garbage disposal.

Do I Need To Install An Air Gap
The only way to truly prevent all back siphoning in a drain lineis by installing an air gap which requires a decent amount of more work. Some municipalities require air gaps, but most find high loops to be acceptable by themselves. The air gap stops any negative pressure from causing back siphoning into the dishwasher by introducing air into the system. The drain hose connects to the air gap underneath the sink and the air gap sits on the countertop close to the sink. In my experience, most sinks work perfectly fine nowadays with only a high loop installed, but if you are experiencing back siphoning, you may wish to have consult a licensed plumber about having an air gap installed.

What Size Drain Pipe Is Used For A Kitchen Sink And Dishwasher
Dishwashers are great home appliances that simply make life easier. If this is your first dishwasher or your first time replacing one, you might wonder what size drain pipe is needed for a kitchen sink with an attached dishwasher.
