The wiring or cable harness consists of various wires that connect to various parts of the dishwasher. On most models, the wiring harness can be found with the control panel. Excess heat sometimes damages the wiring harness, or wires can melt and attach to the dishwasher.

  • Examine the wiring harness for any of the above issues.

  • Replacing a couple of easily accessible wires is slightly easier, but it is still best repaired by a professional.

Defective Maytag Dishwasher Parts

If your Maytag dishwasher wont start after trying these tips, its possible a defective part is responsible.

These part malfunctions can result in starting problems and require replacement via a dishwasher repair service:

  • Blown thermal fuse: A thermal fuse will blow if its defective or if the dishwasher is close to overheating. In either case the dishwasher wont start until the fuse is replaced.
  • Faulty control board: This computerized component powers most dishwasher functions. If its faulty, there wont be any voltage to transmit commands or signals.
  • Defective timer: The timer governs each dishwasher cycle by regulating how long each receives power. While rare, a defective timer wont provide the necessary power for each function.

Heres how to check the power source:

  • Check that the dishwasher is plugged into the wall socket correctly. If your dishwasher is plugged into a GFI outlet, then make sure it hasnt tripped. If it has, you need to reset it.
  • To make sure the power source is not faulty, you can plug something else into the socket and see if that appliance works or not. If it doesnt work, this means there is a problem with the power supply, and if it does work, then this means the power supply is fine.
  • Check the circuit breaker that powers your dishwasher to ensure it hasnt tripped.

Water Not Draining From The Dishwasher

The first thing you may notice if your dishwasher is leaking and isnt draining is that water is leaking onto the floor as soon as the door is opened. If you have a garbage disposal, there might be a clog in it that is preventing the dishwasher from draining. Run your disposal for a few minutes to clear the clog and let your dishwasher drain. Also, check the drain filter in your dishwasher. If its full of debris, clean it out and the water should drain properly. If you just installed the dishwasher, make sure the knockout plug has been removed and the drain hose is connected properly.

    Dishwasher Water Supply Problem

If your dishwasher has power but wont start, a water supply issue may be to blame. Without adequate water from your home supply, a wash cycle wont begin.

These issues can prevent water from supplying the dishwasher:

    • Water valve is off: Check the valve to your home water connection, making sure its in the on position.
    • Inspect the water inlet hose: Make sure the hose is properly positioned and free of kinks that can block water flow.
    • Faulty water inlet valve: This valve controls the supply of water to the dishwasher. If it doesnt open fully or is stuck closed, water wont enter the dishwasher tub. A faulty water inlet valve should be professionally replaced.

    Manually Activate The Motor

Next, you will need to activate the motor manually. Do this by turning it upside down and allowing the plunger to drop. After, touch the probes to the terminals of the motor.

This test should also produce a reading of zero or nearly zero. If the test results are different than above, you may need a new motor start relay.

Why Does My Dishwasher Suddenly Have No Power

You fill your dishracks with dirty dishes then close the dishwasher doorexpecting to set the cycle, but the control panel is dead. Youre thinking to yourself, this has got to be one of the most frustrating appliance failures ever. It seems to always happen at the worst timeon the weekend or when you have company over.

Sometimes, the problem can be resolved with the flick of a light switch.

You may be surprised to learn that many dishwashers have a light switch beside the garbage disposal light switch. The dishwasher light switch shuts off power to the dishwasher when the switch is in the off position.

So, the first step in troubleshooting a dishwasher that wont power up is to check that light switch. Turning on that switch may fix the problem right away and you can start the dishwasher.

Some dishwashers dont have that light switch installed beside the sink. If you dont find such a switch or if the switch is there but its already turned on, then youll need to continue with the troubleshooting steps described below.

When You Should Contact A Professional Service Technician

If youve exhausted all your troubleshooting techniques and your dishwasher still wont start, you may just have to contact a professional to resolve your problem. Check your warranty coverage to see if your machine is still covered. If you have a home warranty or extended appliance warranty, file a claim. Once your claim has been approved, an authorized technician will either call to schedule an appointment or you will need to use specific contractors. Most issues will be covered free of charge.

The Door Latch May Be The Reason Your Dishwasher Is Not Turning On

When you close the door of your dishwasher, the latch engages, and it sends a signal through a circuit board that lets the appliance know that its safe starting the motor and begin the washing cycle. If the machine doesnt start, youve tried resetting the power, and youre still having no luck, your door latch may not be engaging.

The first thing you should do is to examine the latch visibly for obvious signs of wear to test this theory. If it looks okay, that doesnt mean its working as it should. Next, try pushing the latch mechanism with your fingers. If it seems to resist your efforts or sticks a little, you may still have a problem with the latch thats preventing your machine from starting to run.

    Timer Or Electric Control

    Dishwasher Won’t Start

If you determine that the door latch and door switch are operating correctly, look at the timer or electronic control. The first step of the cycle is to drain any standing water in the dishwasher. If you dont hear the drain running, check out the timer and electric control.

There is a manual timer in some dishwasher models that provides power at the proper sequence in the cycle. The timer supplies power to the pump motor, water inlet valve, heater circuit, and drain pump motor. Electrical contacts located inside of the timer power a small motor.

Follow these four steps using a multimeter to check the timer or electric control.

    Check Door Latches And Switches

If your dishwasher doesnt start, you may need to replace the door latch or the switch for the door latch. The door latch assembly is designed to hold the door closed during a cycle. It also houses switches that provide electricity to controls inside the dishwasher. If the door cannot close, or if the switches are defective, then your dishwasher will not start. Inspect the latch assembly for function and damage.

A broken latch assembly can also prevent your machine from starting. Inspect for damage or loose connections in the switch mechanism at the top of your dishwasher.

Locate the door switch at the top of the dishwasher and make sure that it is activated when you close the machine. A continuity test with a multimeter will also work, but be sure your power to the dishwasher is turned off first.

Check To See If The Child Lock Is On

To prevent little ones from accidentally starting the appliance, your dishwasher has a child lock function that, when activated, will essentially ignore any other buttons that are pressed. If your dishwasher isnt starting, start by checking to see if the child lock function is currently in use.

Every dishwasher is different, so be sure to refer to your manual if youre uncertain what this may look like. Typically, youll see a symbol of a lock on the control board. If the child lock function is activated, it will be illuminated.

If you see that the child lock is lit, press the button down for about five seconds until the light goes off . You should be able to start a new cycle right away once the child lock function is off.

    Check The Door Switch

If the latch is latching correctly, the door switch may have an electrical fault. The door switch allows power to the dishwasher only if the door is properly closed. Sometimes the door switch will come loose, or water can get in and damage it.

  • Disconnect the dishwasher from its power source.
  • On most models, the dishwasher switch can be accessed by unscrewing the control panel. On other models, the dishwasher front panel will need to be removed to access it.
  • If the door switch was not connected, plugging it in should solve the power issue.
  • To check if the door switch is faulty, disconnect it from the dishwasher and use a multimeter to check for continuity. If there is more than one wire connecting it, take note of where each wire goes.
  • If it fails the multimeter test, replace the door switch.
