How To Repair Dishwasher Top Rack Adjuster Part Number W10712394
If your Whirlpool, Kenmore, or KitchenAid dishwasher top rack wont slide , the problem likely has to do with your adjuster arm. Over time, the plastic pieces on the dishwasher adjuster arm become worn down, which can cause the clips or wheels to crack and break off. When the adjuster rack breaks, it makes the dishwasher rack difficult to slide front to back.
To fix the problem, start by identifying the failed component. Visually inspect the rollers to verify if the rollers or adjuster assembly are cracked. If you notice the large gray piece holding the rollers is cracked or the wheels are missing, then youll need to replace the rack adjuster. Whirlpool recently updated the adjuster kit to include sturdier, stainless steel componentswe recommend that you order the updated part number W10712394.
Whirlpool Class Action Says Dishwasher Rack Adjusters Break Easily
UPDATE: August 2020, the KitchenAid dishwasher rack adjuster class action settlement is now open.
A Virginia man says Whirlpool needs to offer thousands of consumers a proper remedy for a defect in its Whirlpool dishwashers that causes their top racks to collapse or get stuck.
Plaintiff Warren Burch says the Whirlpool Corporation has failed to properly address a problem with certain dishwashers that have faulty rack adjusters connecting their upper racks to the rest of the washer.
Burch says these adjusters are so brittle that they tend to break during normal use of the washer. The plastic used in these rack adjusters cant stand up to the repeated exposure to high temperatures that happens during normal dishwasher use, he claims.
When these adjusters break, the top rack disconnects from its rails and either collapses or becomes stuck in place, according to Burch.
Whirlpool dishwashers are also sold under other brand names like KitchenAid and Kenmore. These dishwashers may be built with the same allegedly defective rack adjuster and may therefore be afflicted with the same problem, Burch claims.
Burch claims Whirlpool is aware of the problem with these dishwashers. Whirlpool has allegedly received thousands of complaints from customers, some of whom report multiple failures.
He also quotes many online product reviews from customers complaining about broken rack adjusters on their Whirlpool dishwashers.
Your Dishwasher Is Dirty
The last possible cause for a dishwasher that is not cleaning the top rack is that the dishwasher itself is dirty.
If you havent cleaned the dishwasher in a while, the filter and sprayers may be affected, causing all sorts of issues.
You should be cleaning your dishwasher at least once a month. This means wiping it out, changing or cleaning the filter, and making sure that there are no clogs that are causing issues.
Routine cleaning can help you make sure that your filter is going to last longer and work well the entire time that you have it in your home. You can buy cleaners that will help break down any build-up that might be causing issues.
If the issue persists or gets worse, its always a good idea to consult the owners manual for your particular machine or to contact customer service. You may also need to contact a technician to come and see what might be going on with your dishwasher.

Dishwasher Leaving Residue On Top Rack Tips To Prevent The Problem
- Be sure your dishwasher is correctly loaded always improper loading impacts the washing performance greatly.
- Check filter if clogged or not properly installed, the dishwasher may fail to clean dishes in all racks as expected. Clean it, if clogged .
- Ensure proper cycle is selected the issue can also be due to improper cycle/option selection. Be sure to choose the right settings depending on the toughness of soils.
- Preheat water run water until it is hot enough before starting the dishwasher. Incoming water must be adequately hot for the dishwasher to clean dishes efficiently.
- Use the recommended detergent and add proper amount- add adequate detergent depending on the loads and existing hard water conditions.
Add Soap Directly Inside The Machine
If the cup wont open up anymore like it should, just add soap inside the machine directly with the door fully open .
For the most part, you can wash for years with a broken dispenser by simply tossing soap into the bottom before turning it on each time you have some dishes to wash.
The only downside is that it may not clean as effectively as you are used to.
It is because the detergent packs may dissolve a little quickly at the pre-wash step meaning it might not have adequate soap during the main wash stage of the cycle.
The good news is that the pre-wash rinse portions tend to be too short to fully dissolve the packet in most cases so throwing soap in there is the most practical workaround for a broken soap dispenser.
Try it- If it works and you get decently washed dishes, you can be doing this until you decide on the way forward regarding repairs.

Check the level and tightness of the slide rails–they may have come loose after the years of use. Make sure the dishwasher case itself is level. Hope this helps!

How Do You Use A Dishwasher Without A Soap Dispenser
If you dont have a working soap dispenser, you might be left wondering how to use the dishwasher. One method is to buy an automatic dishwasher tablet dispenser system. It holds several detergent pods or tablets and automatically adds one to each cycle.
Just buy a system like this, and you wont have to worry about detergent for the next twelve loads. The only problem? While convenient, its a bit on the pricey side.
Some people have a dishwasher with a pre-wash soap cup. In this case, many people will use that instead. However, this doesnt always work very well. The pre-wash cycle is very short, and you might find that the soap doesnt get distributed very well.
A third alternative is to open the dishwasher after the pre-wash cycle and add detergent before the main cycle begins.

Noise Level: Are Kitchenaid Dishwashers Quiet
As we said earlier, KitchenAid wasn’t always known for quiet dishwashers. The brand has made a lot of improvements, including removing the hard food disposer on the bottomthat was the source of a lot of the noise.
However, KitchenAid currently makes some of the quietest dishwashers on the market. All operate at or below 44 dB, which is just as quiet as a hushed conversation. One of the quietest KitchenAid dishwashers, the KDTE204KPS, has a noise level of 39 dB. To give you a sense of just how silent that is, 39 dB is only slightly louder than the sound of rustling leaves.
Strangely, KitchenAid’s dishwashers increase from 39 dB to 44 dB as you go up in price. If you’re used to an even louder dishwasher, 44 dB will still be quiet to you. But if you’ve had a dishwasher with a lower rating, it may annoy you. Just compare the quietness with the feature sets of models you’re considering and see which makes sense for you.
Still wondering, “How do I know if a dishwasher is quiet?” We’ve got you covered. Check out our audible sound test:

Check For Clogging In Other Parts
If you are having this problem, probably water is not reaching the top rack due to calcium deposits in another part.
I especially recommend that you check the shut-off valve .
What you want to do is this:
- Disconnect the piping going to your dishwashers inlet valve
- Cut out that shut-off valve
Is it plugged with mineral deposits?
If it is, clean it out and see if the dishwasher will now start cleaning the top rack as it used to.
Sprayer Arm Seal Is Broken
If youve checked your water pressure, but your dishwasher is still not cleaning the top rack, chances are you have a faulty sprayer arm seal.
You see, the sprayer arm is made of two parts that are sealed together to force water up to clean the dishes.
If the seal is broken, the water is going to leak out around the seal instead of being forced up to wash the top rack dishes.
You can remedy this issue by replacing the seal or the upper sprayer arm. You can have a technician come and do this repair for you, or you can work on it yourself and get the upper sprayer arm working again.

Best Overall: Kitchenaid Kdte204kps
The KDTE204KPS packs impressive features that put it among the best dishwashers on the market. While it may not compare with more expensive KitchenAid dishwashers in functionality, its price point makes it a great choice.
At 39 dB, the KDTE204KPS is the quietest dishwasher KitchenAid makes. Its noise level is about the same as a library’s and just below the market standard.
It also has a third rack for improved washing and to accommodate more per load. The PrintShield Finish resists fingerprints and smudges.
Are Kitchenaid Dishwashers Reliable
When it comes to reliability, we have to lean toward other popular brands. While KitchenAid has been improving steadily and garnering more positive reviews, it hasnt always scored as high as its competitors. That being said, KitchenAid dishwashers are still more reliable than the average dishwasher brand on the market.
