Start With The Seating
Everyone wants a place for the kids to eat breakfast and for friends to sip wine and nibble on appetizers. Island seating can usurp the kitchen table and save valuable floor space. In this way, incorporating seating is one of the first drivers of the design. If regular chairs are to be used, then part of the island will need to drop down to table height: 29 in. to 30 in. Most folks prefer stools, though. There are stools that fit comfortably under a standard 36-in. countertop, and there are taller stools designed for counters elevated 6 in. to 8 in. above the rest of the island. I prefer the 36-in. countertop. It maximizes the utility of the work surface, and the shorter stools are easy to use for young and old alike. There are reasons for an island to have more than one level hiding a messy counter, for example but in most cases, a simple single-level counter is all thats needed.
Ive designed a few kitchens with the main sink and the dishwasher located in the island. I think the scarcity of this setup is because folks dont want dirty dishes, pots, and pans in plain view they dont want raised bar tops to hide the clutter and they prefer upper cabinets nearby when unloading the dishwasher. However, a secondary sink in the island can add another level of convenience to the kitchen.

Kitchen Countertop Landing Area Recommendations
A kitchen landing area is a countertop space that allows you to place, or land, items from the sink, refrigerator, cooking surface, and oven service areas. The countertop is adjacent to these areas.
For example, if a stove has no nearby landing area, the cook may be tempted to place a hot pan that has just been removed in a close but unsafe spot, perhaps on top of the fridge or on the floor.
A landing area is simply a way of describing the absolute minimum amount of countertop needed adjacent to one of these areas.
- Sink landing area: 24 inches on one side and 18 inches on the other side, minimum
- Refrigerator landing area: 15 inches on the handle side of the fridge
- Cooking surface landing area: 12 inches on one side and 15 inches on the other side, minimum
- Oven landing area: 15 inches adjacent to or above the oven
If the oven door opens onto a work aisle, not a traffic walkway, you are allowed to provide a landing area across from the oven no more than 48 inches away.

When designing your kitchen remodel, it might be tempting to be totally free about spacing and placement. Yet limits do apply. Limits stem less from mandatory building code than from voluntary space design recommendations, many derived from the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s Kitchen Planning Guidelines.
These limits and spatial recommendations apply to key areas such as the distance between work areas aisle distance between work areas walkway aisles seating clearances dishwasher spacing and placement and kitchen countertop landing areas.
Space | |
Distance between island and counter | Minimum 42 inches usually or 48 inches for kitchens with +1 cooks |
Walkway space | Minimum 42 inches near a work area or 36 inches elsewhere |
Dishwasher to sink | |
32 to 44 inches, depending on exactly location and amount of expected foot traffic nearby |

Should You Include Seating
Does every island need to have knee space for stools? The answer is a strong No, said Stefanie Brechbuehler, a partner at the New York-based design studio Workstead. Oftentimes, I find it very confusing when you see a big island with lots of seating bordering a huge dining table with lots of seating. To me, it feels superfluous. But at the same time, I know its fun to sit at an island while someones cooking.
To decide what works best for you, she said, consider how much seating you really need , as well as how much space you require for kitchen essentials. In smaller kitchens, it might be better to forgo room for stools and maximize storage space.
At Ms. Brechbuehlers former home in Gallatin, N.Y., she and her husband and business partner, Robert Highsmith, designed an island without seating. Instead, the island has a sink and dishwasher on one side on the other side are deep storage drawers accessible from an adjacent dining area.

Whats Important For A Big Kitchen Island Design

As weve discussed above, a large kitchen island design needs to take into account the slab size available for your chosen kitchen countertop. But if your kitchen is really large, its not only the countertop materials length that should be considered.
Almost any kitchen island will naturally be proportional to the space, as the size is typically dictated by three sides of base and wall cabinets which will determine the length of the center island, says Jay Kallos, senior vice president of architecture at Ashton Woods .
If you have a really wide space where this guidance isnt present, your guiding factors are what works aesthetically and ergonomically in the space. This might be an instance where two square islands in line work best by providing access at the midpoint of what would be an island big enough to park a car on without the break. For an extra deep kitchen, two parallel islands work really well, allowing one to be a working island and the other left to dining, studying or partying.
Be sure to think about practicalities as well. Your island shouldnt be so wide that you cant reach the center from both sides to clean, says Teri Simone, head of design for Nieu Cabinet Doors .
For length, its important to consider what the island is blocking access to. If the island is so big that you are walking a long way around to access elements of your working triangle, its too big.

When You Dont Have Enough Countertop Space Against The Wall
Probably the most popular kitchen island layout I come across is a straight single wall of cabinets with the island in front of them. You could also describe it as an open galley kitchen. The mistake I see people make here is that they try to fit everything on that single run of cabinets against the wall in an attempt to keep the island clear. However, unless you have a very long run of worktop on the wall this will most likely lead to a poor layout. Fitting a hob as well as a sink on the same run requires a good amount of space. They will need to be set in from the ends of the run, for safety or regulations . And they will need separation from each other, again for safety but also to provide you with some useable countertop space for prep or for small appliances to live, such as your toaster, kettle and blender. So when you dont have enough space for both, moving the sink to the kitchen island makes a lot of sense from a layout point of view. It creates the separation needed and gives you lots of nice larger open areas of countertop space so nothing feels cramped. The alternative would be to place the hob on the island but this comes with its own set of cons, most notably what you do about an island cooker hood.

Leg Length From 4 To 9 Feet
With the kitchen triangle, no individual leg should be shorter than 4 feet and no individual leg should be more than 9 feet.
Limiting travel distance for kitchen activities is important. Moving from the kitchen to the prep area, for instance, is tiresome and inefficient if it’s too far. So, distance is minimized.
But distances should not be too short, either. Tight distances don’t provide enough room for working, for moving around, or for multiple users.
Balance is the main reason for the 4-to-9-foot leg restriction. If one leg is too long or short, the other two legs’ distances after affected. All legs should be roughly the same distance.

Kitchen Island Dimensions With Seating
Though not required, kitchen island seating is a very popular design choice especially with families. If you want to have seating at your island, you must have an overhang. No ifs, ands, or buts. The minimum overhang depth for a kitchen island with seating is 12 inches. However, a 15- or 18-inch depth is going to be the most comfortable choice. Overhangs that are over 12 inches will typically require support for the countertop.
Although some countertop materials can work with larger overhangs without needing support, it is best to consult the manufacturer before making the final decisions. If the countertop does need additional support, this can be done using steel bars, pony walls, or decorative legs under the counter.
As far as seating goes, youll want to factor in at least 24 inches of width per person. This will allow for enough elbow room to sit comfortably and not feel like you are shoulder to shoulder with the person next to you. However, if you have the space, a 30-inch width per person will create much more comfortable seating especially if the seating is going to be mostly used by kids.
Quick Tip: If you dont have enough space for the number of seats you require along the back of your kitchen island, you can install an L-shaped overhang. This will allow seating on two sides of the island.

Basic Kitchen Island Dimensions
Kitchen islands come in all kinds of sizes. The minimum size for a built in island is about 24 wide x 48 long. A moveable island or kitchen table is a good idea if you dont have enough room for a built in.
Overall, a rectangular shaped island is better than a square one. In addition to being more visually appealing, its easier to live with. Its difficult to reach the middle of a counter wider than 4.5 or 5, so cleaning that area will be tricky. With a wide counter, youll have to walk around to the seating side to gather plates and cleanup after a meal, rather than reaching across. While not a tragedy, it will get old fast.
Here are some island dimensions that you can use as a guideline:
Dishwasher Spacing And Placement Recommendations

Dishwashers and sinks can easily get crowded since they need to be close in proximity to take advantage of their shared drainage and water supply.
- Dishwasher to sink distance: From the dishwasher to the sink, the distance should be no more than 36 inches. The intent is two-fold: first, to make sure that the cook can easily move dishes from the sink to the dishwasher secondly, to ease under-counter hookups between sink and dishwasher.
- Dishwasher to base cabinets distance: From the dishwasher to the nearest base cabinets or other obstructions should be 21 inches minimum. Providing distance minimums gives the dishwasher door plenty of room to open.

Should You Put Sink In Kitchen Island
Installing your sink on the kitchen island instead of on the main countertop is an innovative trend in kitchen design. Before youre ready to jump on the bandwagon, ask yourself these questions to determine if a kitchen island sink is right for you.
First, what do you want to look at while doing mundane kitchen chores? Washing dishes is boring. In many kitchens, the sink faces a wall, giving you a double dose of boring. Is it any wonder the dishes pile up?
Changing the location of the sink from the main countertop wont magically clean your dishes. However, depending on the placement and orientation of your kitchen, placing the sink on the island might allow you to see out a window, or into other rooms and areas of your home. Washing dishes is a lot more attractive when you have something interesting to look at while you do it.
Next, what is the purpose of the kitchen island? If youre hoping that your school-age children will do their homework there, ensure they have a seating area well away from the splash zone, to protect any papers and electronics from potential water damage.
If you want to encourage your partner to help out more in the kitchen, an extra prep sink on the island can go a long way towards defusing tension and reducing collisions.

How Big Should A Kitchen Island Be With A Sink
Ideally, around 1.8m wide. This will allow for a 60cm dishwasher, 60cm sink cabinet and a 60cm storage cabinet . Three 600mm cabinets making up the 1.8m. Nice and symmetrical. This gives enough worktop space on either side of the sink for dirty dishes to stack up one side and clean dishes to drain and dry the other. Anything much smaller wont give you adequate space on either side of your sink. Things will feel very cluttered and dishes can easily get knocked off the worktop.Id also recommend that the island is deeper than a single 600mm cabinet depth. Ideally at least 900mm deep. This gives some space behind the sink for any splashes to land on the worktop rather than the floor. Saying all of this, these are ideal minimum dimensions. If you have more room, great, expand these sizes to suit. However, if you dont have room for an island this size, you still might be able to make it work for you. Just think carefully about what is going into the island and how you intend to use it. And remember, sometimes its just not meant to be.A poorly designed island will drive you mad!

Where Should A Kitchen Island Be Placed
A kitchen island should be planned as part of an overall scheme to ensure optimum functionality and also take into account sight lines what the island looks like in the space from all angles, as well as the view from the island. It is also important to factor in kitchen island lighting at the planning stage.
Selecting The Features That Work For You
Consider Adding a Sink
Adding a sink to your countertop is a great idea to separate your wash area. Place it in a way that it suits your needs and contributes to the kitchens functionality.
Single Sinks/Double Sinks
Youll need to decide if you want a single or double sink on your kitchen island.
Single sinks, which have one larger wash basin, are more apt for smaller spaces and for washing bigger items. A large single sink does not take up too much counter space. It is preferred by people who like to do one task at a time.
With double sinks you have the flexibility of using the sides for different purposes. A popular use is to wash dishes on one side and prep food on the other, so that you are cleaning during your cooking process. You can always use both for prepping, such as washing veggies in one sink while having them draining the other.
Double sinks, however, may not be suitable to wash larger items. Food particles may even get stuck in the side without the garbage disposal. Give good thought as to how you will be using your sink or you may be left with a small sink and a sink you hardly use.
