Why Is My Dishwasher Leaking From The Bottom

Easy Fix: Dishwasher Leak – How to Fix a Leaking Dishwasher

A dishwasher has lots of moving parts most of which are backed up by rubber seals to make sure that water is drawn from the supply hose, used to clean the dishes and drained out without leaking.

As is the case with most appliances, one or two parts are bound to fail resulting in leaks. The good thing is that fixing a leaking dishwasher is fairly easy and in most of the cases you will hardly need to call a plumber.

A leaking dishwasher is usually caused by a worn out door gasket, loose or bent door latch, faulty inlet valve, cracked hoses, loose hose connections, damaged/jammed spray arm, defective float switch or using the wrong detergent. A dishwasher that is not level on the floor will also leak.

If your dishwasher is leaking from the bottom, start by investigating the source of the leak. Check if the door seal is worn or if the latch is loose or bent . Make sure that the float arm is not cracked or jammed, the float switch is shutting off precisely and the water level is below the heating element. look for loose/leaky hose connections.

The signs of a leaking dishwasher is water pooling at the bottom of the dishwasher, or when you see it leaking from bottom right or left corner. Some dishwashers will leak when they are running while other will leak even when it is turned off.

To find a leak in your dishwasher, remove the lower access panel and the lower dish rack. Grab a flashlight and check where the leak is coming from as the dishwasher runs.

Dishwasher Door Seal Leak

If your Bosch dishwasher is leaking water, its possible that the leak is coming from the door seal. The door seal is located around the lower part of the dishwasher door and if its damaged or warped, the door can start to leak.

To troubleshoot this problem, inspect the door seal for any cracks or holes. If you find any damage, youll need to replace the damaged seal.

Grommet And Dispenser Damage

A dishwasher leak from the front may be traced to a problem with the soap dispenser or grommet. The inner door panel houses the dispenser that is sealed with a rubber grommet. The dispenser is attached to the panel with screws or with a latch assembly. Unplug the dishwasher form its power supply.

Inspect the dispenser and the grommet for crack or damaged areas. Replace the defective dispenser or grommet. Plug the dishwasher back on to check for successful repair. Perform regular inspection and maintenance to keep your dishwasher in good working condition.

    Water Valve Is Leaking

The inlet valve is located under the front of your dishwasher, and it is where water enters through the waterline. The seal needs to be tightly installed and in good condition, because it plays a key part in determining both water pressure and access.

Youll know if your water inlet valve is leaking when you start to notice a slow drip coming from the top of the valve. This is usually caused by hard water material or corrosion on the valve itself.

If there is a leaky water inlet valve , turn off the water supply and replace the valve as soon as possible.

The Door May Be Improperly Attached

If the dishwasher is leaking directly under the door, it may be improperly attached. The door should fit tightly into place but if it isnt, it could allow water to enter through the gap. If water still runs from the door, check the gasket. The gasket is the rubber sealing on the door that is made to prevent water from flowing out of your dishwasher. It may be time to replace the gasket.

    Dishwasher Leaking From Door

A faulty gasket is a common cause of dishwasher door leaks. The rubber gasket runs along the perimeter of the door or its opening, creating a watertight seal when the door is closed. However, if the gasket is damaged, dirty or loose, it wont seal properly, resulting in water coming from dishwasher door during wash cycles.

To assess the gasket, open the dishwasher door and feel along it with your hand to check for cracks, holes, or debris. If the gasket is damaged or loose, it must be replaced. However, a buildup of debris can be removed with a damp cloth to restore the gaskets seal.

    Dishwasher Drain Hose Malfunction

EASY FIX: Dishwasher Leak – How to Fix a Leaking Dishwasher

The drain tube carries dirty water from the dishwasher to the sink or disposal. Over time, its connections can loosen, causing leaks from its clamps at the drain, disposal, or dishwasher. The hose can also suffer damage like cracks or holes. Both loose connections and damage can result in a dishwasher leaking underneath.

To assess the hose at its dishwasher connection, remove the lower front kick plate. Examine the hoses connection at the drain or disposal by looking under the kitchen sink. If there are leaks coming from its connection clamps, the clamps may need to be tightened. However, if the clamps are damaged and leaking or the hose has a crack or hole, the hose must be replaced.

Wrong Type Or Amount Of Detergent

Prepare Your Kitchen Appliances for Thanksgiving

If your dishwasher leaks sometimes, but not always, it could have to do with your choice of detergent and its amount. Using dishwashing soap instead of dishwasher detergent can result in excessive sudsing, causing leaks during wash cycles. Even if you consistently use dishwasher detergent, adding too much can also result in excessive suds and leaks.

To avoid leaking its imperative to only use dishwasher detergent, not dishwashing liquid or other cleansers. When adding detergent, refer to the package instructions for the right amount and measure accurately to avoid oversudsing.

    Vii Defective Dishwasher Pump

A failing water pump may be the reason why your dishwasher is leaking. All dishwashers have a pump that circulates water. Some models also use a pump to drain water.

Found inside the pump housing are two compartments. One is the circulation part that consists of a wash impeller and filter components. Another is the drain part, which has a drain impeller and chopper blade.

How to test the dishwasher pump using a multimeter:

  • Make sure you disconnect the dishwasher from the power source.
  • Locate the water pump. For most dishwasher brands and models, it should be behind the lower access panel. Consult the manual if you are unsure.
  • Set the multimeter to Rx1 and test for continuity. Making sure that the probes touch the terminals, you should have a reading of zero or near zero.
  • Check the ground connection by keeping one probe on a terminal, and touch the bare metal pump housing with the other probe. You should not get any reading at all.
  • If the results are not as expected, then you or an appliance repair technician need to replace the pump.

    Replacing The Door Gasket

  • 1Purchase a replacement gasket. When the leak is caused by a damaged or brittle gasket, you can fix the leak by removing the old gasket and replacing it with a new one. Make sure the replacement gasket you purchase is manufacturer-approved, and that it matches the make and model of your dishwasher.
  • A gasket thatâs not made for your dishwasher may not fit properly, and this means it wonât form a proper seal and will continue to leak.
  • 2Remove the old gasket. Open the dishwasher door. Start at the bottom left corner, and pinch the gasket firmly with your fingers. Loosen the gasket out of position, and peel it away from the edge of the door or tub. Continue peeling until you have removed the gasket from its position.
  • Pay attention to the orientation of the gasket around the tub or door. The new gasket will have to be installed in the same way.XResearch source
  • 3Clean the area. Fill a small bowl with warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Soak a cotton swab in the soapy water, and use the swab to clean the area where the gasket was. Once itâs clean, rinse the area with clean water. Wipe it dry with a rag and let the area air dry.
  • This will give the new gasket a clean and dry surface to adhere to, and this will ensure a proper seal.
  • Donât stretch the gasket as you work.

    Inlet Valve Or Pump Malfunction

The inlet valve lets in water into the dishwasher tub. An electronic timer controls the valve. The dishwasher pump circulates water around the dishes and drains it away. Unplug the dishwasher from its power supply and turn off the water supply.

Remove the lower kickplate panel to access the inlet valve. The inlet valve is attached to two wires and an inlet and outlet water hose.

Remove the hoses and collect water spills in a bowl. Disconnect the wires by carefully tugging on the connectors. Unscrew the inlet valve and install a new inlet valve to replace the defective one.

Reconnect the hoses and wires to the inlet valve. Check and replace the pump located at the base of the dishwasher if necessary. Replace the lower kickplate panel. Plug into the power supply and check to see if dishwasher function is restored.

    Water Inlet Valve Is Faulty

    How to Fix Leaking Dishwasher

The valve that allows water to enter into the chamber of the dishwasher is a common site for failure. Your dishes will not be cleaned and you may even hear noisy running sounds while the dishwasher is in use.

Since the inlet water valve is pumping water at some pressure into the dishwasher, the leak will be major and cause a dishwasher to leak from the bottom.

Leak From The Water Supply Line

If you see the water coming out from the bottom of your dishwasher, it is likely that the issue is with the water supply line. This is an especially common issue immediately following an installation, because the supply hoses may not have been tightened down properly. It can also happen years down the road, however, if something wears out.

Repairing a Water Supply Line Leak

To gain access to the water supply line, start by removing the lower panel from the front of the unit. If there is no lower front panel, you may have to pull the whole unit out so you can access it from the back.

Once you have access to the supply line, attempt to look for wet areas, as they could help you find exactly where the water is leaking from. If you see water dripping from a damaged hose, for example, you will simply need to replace the entire hose.

More commonly, the leak will come from where the hose connects to the dishwasher. This is often caused by the hose becoming loose over time. Check to make sure the hose is securely tightened using your hand or a pair of slip joint plyers. Make sure not to overtighten, since the connection point is typically made of plastic and could break off. Once you have tightened it down, run your dishwasher to confirm that the problem has been fixed.

    Loose Or Damaged Valves

Over time, connections and hoses inside your dishwasher can work loose. Check your drain hoses to ensure everythings securely connected and verify your water inlet valve isnt stuck, which would certainly cause flooding. If you have cracked hoses, theyre easy to replace with a trip to the hardware store.

Symptom: Dishwasher Leaking From One Corner

Every appliance, especially those that move water, needs to be level. This means the top and bottom edges need to be parallel with the floor. If your dishwasher is not level, that tilt can result in poor draining or unnecessary leaks. Use a bubble level to detect if your dishwasher is level or crooked. Then twist the dishwasher feet so that they extend or retract until the dishwasher sits level on the floor in its slot.

    Vi Faulty Water Inlet Valve

Maytag dishwasher leaks from bottom of door

The water from the supply line passes through an inlet valve to the dishwasher. If it fails to open and close properly, then you may have found the cause of why your dishwasher is leaking.

To determine if the water inlet valve is defective, open the door when the dishwasher is in the middle of a wash cycle. If the water continues to fill, the water inlet valve is likely damaged.

Since you already suspect that it is the cause, you might as well locate and inspect it for signs of damage.

After removing the access panel, you should see the water inlet valve. It is referred to as a solenoid valve because of the electrical components that open and close the valve. Moreover, it can have one or two solenoids, each having two wires.

A damaged solenoid valve, unfortunately, is beyond fixing. You would need to check the manual for part number and order a replacement from a dealer or the manufacturer.

How to replace the water inlet valve:

  • Be sure to disconnect the dishwasher from the power source.
  • Remove the access panel at the bottom of the dishwasher, and unscrew or release the clamps to detach the hose.
  • Disconnect the water inlet valve carefully. Make sure you label each wire for easier connection to the replacement valve.
  • Replace the old valve with the new water inlet valve, and connect the electrical wires and hose.

Symptom: Dishwasher Leaking From Lower Front

The inlet valve is where water enters the dishwasher through the water line hose. The inlet valve needs to be tightly installed with a good seal because it determines both water access and water pressure. If your inlet valve is damaged or the seal is loose, then you may be see water puddling underneath the front of your dishwasher.

Inspect the inlet valve by removing the kickplate underneath the dishwasher door. This should reveal a few components near the front of the underside of your dishwasher, including the inlet valve.
