Install The Electrical Circuit

How To Install A GE Dishwasher – Installation

The first step is to install a 20-amp circuit from the electrical service panel if one is not already installed. To add a circuit cable, drill a hole down through the floor into the basement or crawlspace.

Install 12 AWG cable from the dishwasher space to the service panel. Leave about six feet of cable sticking through the hole by the dishwasher. This will allow the dishwasher to be pulled out during servicing. Tape the wire to the floor with a piece of duct tape so it doesn’t slip down through the hole.

Have an electrician install a new circuit breaker in the service panel and make the final wiring connections. If there is an existing circuit for the dishwasher, be sure that the power is turned off to the circuit.

How To Install A Ge Dishwasher

Avoid the hassle of hand-washing dishes by installing a GE dishwasher in your home’s kitchen. Most of today’s homes are built the with the wiring and plumbing for a built-in dishwasher already installed. Consult a plumber and an electrician or a general contractor if your home does not have these items. Working with the electrical wiring is too dangerous a project for most homeowners to attempt without professional assistance.

  • Switch off power to the kitchen cabinet area from the home’s circuit breaker panel. A built-in GE dishwasher must be directly connected to the home’s electrical wiring instead of plugging into a wall outlet, so it is vital that you know the power is off before you proceed with the installation. Close the water shut-off valve under the sink.

  • Lay a piece of scrap plywood or a thick blanket in front of the cabinet opening to protect your kitchen floor. Have an assistant help you unpack the dishwasher and lift it onto the wood or blanket. Attach the drain hose and water supply line to the back of the dishwasher.

  • Connect the electrical wires from the home to the power supply of the dishwasher. Match the black wires on each side with each other. Do the same with the white wires. Ground the circuit by wrapping the green wire from the house around the ground screw on the dishwasher.

  • Run a test cycle with no dishes in the racks to make sure all of the connections are secure and no water is leaking out of the dishwasher.

Thread the coupling nut of the supply tube onto the dishwasher 90 fitting, and tighten with channel-lock pliers or an adjustable wrench. This is a compression fitting that does not require pipe joint compound. Be careful not to overtighten, as it is possible to strip the threads.

Turn Off The Water And Electricity In Your Kitchen

Before you touch your dishwasher, start by cutting off the electricity and water supply to the kitchen. Youll be removing and adding a new appliance that needs both to work, so you dont want to risk a water leak or shock during the process.

Youll want to find your homes breaker box and turn off the electricity to the kitchen. To turn off your water supply line, find the shutoff valve and ensure it is off. Unplug your dishwasher and disconnect the dishwasher drain hose currently connected under your sink.

Note: Theres probably a good amount of dirty water and food gunk that will spill from the drain hose once you unplug it. Have a bucket ready to catch any excess water draining from the pipe.

What To Consider Before Installing Your Dishwasher

How to Install a GE Appliances Plastic Tall Tub Dishwasher

The Bosch 800 Series SHPM88Z75N is the best dishwasher you can buy.

Before you get your new dishwasher, youll want to make sure your kitchen is fully prepped to have the new dishwasher delivered . Start by measuring everything to make sure you have the clearance in your home to have a new appliance delivered, measuring the space where your dishwasher will go to ensure a snug fit, and clearing out enough space in your home to house the new dishwasher while you prepare to install it.

Next, youll want to get all the tools you need to complete the job. Your dishwasher delivery will include smaller tools like screws, brackets, and clamps, but youll want to have some standard home improvement tools on hand, like a screwdriver, pliers, wrench, measuring tape, power drill, and flashlight.

Finally, you may want to consider calling in a buddy to help you through the process, either physically or emotionally. I was lucky to have a live-in spouse who did all the things I didnt want to . A delivery team will be able to move the appliances, but a buddy can help trade-off if youre struggling with a screw, or provide much-needed positive reinforcement throughout the journey.

How Much Does It Cost To Install Appliances

Installing a new appliance costs $125, on average. However, homeowners should expect to pay within the range of $120 to $150.

For less complex appliance installations, you may pay a low-end cost ranging between $65 and $100. Ask whichever appliance installation service you hire to give you a price quote, if possible.

    Should You Tip Appliance Installers

You can tip appliance installers if you feel their service has gone above and beyond. A standard tip is between $10 and $20.

Reasons you might consider tipping include a very pleasant customer service demeanor, having to carry a heavy appliance up or down the stairs, working in inclement weather, taking care not to make a mess and other acts of care and consideration. You are not obligated to leave a tip but one is always appreciated.

    Remove Your Existing Dishwasher

Start by finding and removing your dishwashers toekick. The toekick is a metal plate at the base of your dishwasherit should be easily removed with a screwdriver, and will allow you to see underneath your dishwasher.

Once the toekick is out, youll want to unscrew the leveling legs found in each of the four corners of the dishwasher base. You can do this with your arms or an extended wrench, just make sure you start with the legs in the back. By unscrewing the leveling legs, you will create space between your dishwasher and the counter, allowing you to slide the dishwasher out once youve created enough.

If you cannot comfortably reach under your dishwasher or get the leveling legs to budge, call a handyman to help.

Are There Ways To Be Safe If I Hire An Appliance Repairman Or Specialist When Social Distancing

How to Install a GE Profile PDW9200 Dishwasher

If you decide to hire an appliance service specialist or repairman, check your local news for community guidelines and follow the CDCs guidelines for social distancing. Discuss safety protocols with the appliance repairmen before they enter your home. And when they enter your home, stay at least 6 feet apart, dont shake hands, sanitize all involved surfaces and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

If you decide to postpone the work, consider buying a gift card from them or paying for future work. This is a great way to give back to the community, as many small businesses and individual contractors are feeling the economic effects of social distancing.

Ge Cafe Dishwasher Sticks Out Too Far

We are currently having a home built and our dishwasher appears to have been installed incorrectly. It is a GE Cafe dishwasher that is mean to be flush mounted with the cabinets. However, in its current state the entire door protrudes out.

The installation manual states: This dishwasher is capable of a true-flush installation at a 24 deep opening. The pictures from the GE Cafe website show it flush-mounted with the dishwasher pushed back far enough under the counter that when closed the top of the dishwasher door would be concealed.

    Flushed with Cabinets

Dishwasher unit set back far enough to accommodate door under counter

Our countertop is made of Quartz. Therefore, the dishwasher was secured to the face frames of each adjacent cabinet instead of the countertop. This created the issue we have now with the door protruding out and not under the counter overhang. The installation manual specifically states: Do not screw into the cabinet face frame.

So my questions are: What should the dishwasher be secured to? The installation manual says secure it to the cabinet sides. Has anyone ever done this?

    Connecting The Electrical Supply

Always be sure to cut off the power to the dishwasher by flipping the circuit breaker before attempting to connect the electrical supply. Run the cable through the back of the electrical box on the dishwasher, and connect the hot and neutral wires to the corresponding wires in the box using wire nuts. Be sure to connect the ground wire to the green screw and replace the cover on the box.

Turn the water back on and check for leaks, then turn on the power and run the dishwasher through a full cycle. If everything works properly, slide the machine into the cabinet, being careful not to crimp or pinch the pipes. Plumb and level it by raising and lowering the adjustable feet on either side.

Screw the dishwasher to the underside of the countertop to hold it in place. When attaching the mounting screws to the plywood used to support a stone countertop, be sure the screws do not protrude into the stone.

Attach the faceplate to the base, and your new dishwasher is ready to go!

    Connect The Water Line

To install the water line to the dishwasher, you’ll need to connect to a shutoff valve on the hot water supply pipe under the sink. The easiest way to do this is to replace the existing shutoff valve with a dual-outlet shutoff valve so the same valve can serve the sink faucet and dishwasher.

Feed 3/8-inch flexible copper supply tubing through the cabinet hole and connect one end to the shutoff valve. Connect the other end to the dishwasher’s water valve, following the manufacturer’s directions. You’ll likely need to add a brass fitting to the water valve to accommodate the 3/8-inch water line. Use thread seal tape on all connections to help prevent leaks.
