When your kitchen sink drains into your dishwasher, youve got a problem, not the least of which is an overflow leak from the dishwasher and/or water backing up onto the sink, which can also overflow. Besides having to mop out, the bigger issue is youve got a potential health hazard. Dirty sudsy water filled with bacteria is nothing you want to leave standing in your sink or dishwasher. Sink water flowing into a dishwasher cannot only cause bad smells in your kitchen, more seriously it is a health hazard, so this needs to be addressed as soon as it becomes apparent.

The reason this can happen is because the water source for the sink and the dishwasher are the sameany issue with that main line can cause a backup. Sometimes a little cleaning and preventative maintenance can go a long way to avoiding this. Sometimes youll need to call a plumber.

Lets look at what is causing these issues and what you can do to correct them. There are several areas to check to figure out why sink water is draining into the dishwasher. Basically, there are four potential sources of clogs that cause the problem of sink water draining into your dishwasher:

  • Dishwasher drain hose loop or air gap
  • Kitchen sink drain
  • Garbage Disposal

Why Does My Dishwasher Have Standing Water

Usually standing water in the dishwasher is caused by foodstuff or debris. Because the food particles stuck on to the drain or garbage disposal which cause the water to stand in the bottom of the dishwasher. So whenever you wash the dishes, first scrub food particles from the dishes then put them into the machine.

Also, after the wash cycle clean the filter, drain or, dispose of it. You can also use a hander or a wire to clean the drain. Just pull the wire into the drain and then push it toward yourself. Like this, the food debris will come out. Then put some warm water on it.

How Do You Hook Up A Dishwasher Without A Garbage Disposal

Although dishwashers usually connect to a garbage disposal, providing theres one present, it isnt necessary. You can easily bypass the appliance with specific piping attachments.

If you dont have a garbage disposal with your dishwasher, you must include an air gap within the new dishwasher installation. This ensures the appliance is in agreement with local plumbing codes and regulations.

The Uniform Plumbing Code Section 807.4 states, no domestic dishwashing machine shall be directly connected to a drainage system or food waste disposer without using an approved dishwasher airgap fitting on the discharge side of the dishwashing machine.

The dishwashers hose must run down from the air gap and join the sink drain via a drain tailpiece with a branch fitting. The hose fits onto the ribbed branch fitting, then is secured with a hose clamp.

Air Gap And Garbage Disposal Issues

In some cases, air gap or disposal clogs may be responsible when your dishwasher wont drain water. If you have an air gap or disposal, they likely share a common drain with the dishwasher. If either is clogged with debris, it can block the drain, causing water to back up into the dishwasher during a wash cycle.

We recommend running the disposal before starting a dishwasher cycle to clear the drain of lingering food scraps. If you have an air gap, remove the cap and use a paper towel to remove any accumulated debris on a regular basis.

Try Vinegar And Baking Soda

Water In Bottom Of Dishwasher

If there is water at the bottom of the machine then mix equally one cup of vinegar and baking soda into the standing water. Leave it for 30 minutes. If the water is draining after putting this mixture then rinse it with hot water and run a wash cycle so that the drain works properly.

Usually, this method works because of the acidic qualities of vinegar and baking soda. So it would prevent the water to clog and drain it properly.

How To Connect Dishwasher Drain Connection Using High Loop Directly To Drain

If your dishwasher drain hose does not fit securely on the garbage disposal outlet, you can use a high loop to connect the two. This will create more of a slope for the water and debris to flow down and out of your home. The following steps will show you how to do this:

Measure 17 inches from the end of the dishwasher drain hose.

Cut a piece of garden hose that is that length and fit it over the end of the dishwasher drain hose.

Fit the other end of the garden hose over the garbage disposal outlet.

Tighten clamp on both ends to secure connections.

If you have an air gap installed on your dishwasher, you will not need to use a high loop. You can simply connect the dishwasher drain hose directly to the garbage disposal outlet. However, if your dishwasher does not have an air gap, you will need to install one before connecting the dishwasher drain hose directly to the garbage disposal outlet. Air gaps are required in some states and not required in others, so check your local codes to see if you need one.

Check And Clean The Drain Hose

Still having dishwasher performance issues? The problem may lie with your drain hose. The hose is likely located in the back of the dishwasher so youll need to pull it away from the wall to get at it. You may also need to remove a plate located on the back of the dishwasher units to access the hose. Be sure the unit is powered off or unplugged before you get to work. Then, once you have access, do the following:

  • Check for any kinks or bends in the hose that could be stopping it from draining properly.
  • If thats not the issue, grab your pliers and loosen the clamp on the hose so that you can remove the hose and visually examine it for any clogs. Be sure to have towels handy or a bucket to collect any water that is released.
  • If you dont see a clog, try flushing the hose with hot water to see if the water is flowing properly.
  • If water isnt flowing properly, use your homemade formula of baking soda and vinegar to try to flush out debris.
  • You can also replace the hose if you cant break up the clog. Remember to maintain the high rise loop as this provides proper flow.
  • Reattach with the clamp and run a rinse cycle on the hottest setting to see if the problem is resolved.

Manually Spin The Motor

Sometimes, leaving your dishwasher idle for an extended period can prevent water from draining. Thats because food residue may dry on the rotating parts of the motor when it stays inactive for long, preventing it from turning as it should when you run a cycle.

When your motor is unable to turn, your unit wont let water drain. Luckily, fixing dishwasher drainage issues caused by a stuck motor can be as simple as spinning the motor a few times. Try it and run a cycle to see if it worked.

Why Is There Standing Water In The Bottom Of My Dishwasher

Your dishwasher drains through a drain hose which is connected to the garbage disposal or directly to the kitchen sink drain line. The sink, garbage disposal and dishwasher therefore share the same drain line.

If you notice water at the bottom of your dishwasher, the problem could be within the dishwasher or caused by a clogged garbage disposal or sink drain line.

Standing water at the bottom of the dishwasher is a sign that it is not draining. This is often caused by a clogged filter or drain hose, or jammed drain pump impellers. It could also be caused by a kinked or poorly installed drain hose or a clogged garbage disposal/sink drain line.

If you have a new dishwasher that is not draining, it is very possible that the garbage disposal knockout plug was not removed during installation of the dishwasher. Disconnect the drain hose from the garbage disposal and knock out the plug with a hammer and punch/screwdriver.

To fix a dishwasher that is not draining, start by soaking up the standing water using a sponge. Check if the filter is clogged or the drain pump impellers are jammed. Disconnect the drain hose and blow air or snake it. If the problems persists remove and clean the P-trap then flush the drain line using baking soda and vinegar solution.

Remember that if your garbage disposal or sink drain line is clogged, draining the sink will have water backing up into your dishwasher unless you have an air gap.

    Look For Other Culprits

Cleaning the filter wont help if the problem is deeper inside. You may need to replace the drain valve.

For specific information and maintenance instructions consult your owners manual. If none of those troubleshooting work, all else fails and youre feeling overwhelmed, schedule service or go to the repair center.

S To Connect Dishwasher Drain Hose To A Garbage Disposal

Connecting dishwasher drain hose with garbage disposal is not a herculean task that requires power or any advanced electrical or plumbing skills. It is pretty straightforward, there are just a few things that need to be kept in mind, and you are ready to go.

Step 1 Start by unplugging the garbage disposal from the electrical socket under the sink. If it is connected directly with the circuit, then turn off the disposal unit from the main panel. It is important to switch off any electrical connections because you do not want to get electrocuted.

Step 2 On the upper side of the garbage disposal is a drain tube part that will receive the hose from the dishwasher. When you try to put a screwdriver through it, you will find a metal plug blocking the nozzle.

You have to knock out the metal plug by punching it with the help of a screwdriver and hammer .

Now use the needle-nose pliers to remove the metal plug. Make sure to remove all the metal particles.

Step 3 Now, connect the dishwasher drain hose onto the garbage disposal and slide the large retaining clamp onto the end of drain hose and tighten the clamp with the help of screwdriver or wrench.

The drain hose should be looped above the connection point. The connection point itself should be at least 20 inches from the kitchen floor. If the connection point is lower than 20 inches, then an air gap must be used to prevent the drain water from siphoning back to the dishwasher.
