One TikToker commented that their oven trays were totally black, but after using the trick overnight they were left shiny without any scrubbing. ‘OMG genius! I am doing this tomorrow! Thank you so much,’ said another.

Cleaning an oven is particularly daunting because it’s not just the oven, it’s the grimy trays with burnt-on grime, too. Plus you know it’s going to involve some serious elbow grease.

So, how did we get on with the hack? We tried a version that involves wrapping the trays and racks in foil, which causes a chemical reaction. This trick promises that you wouldn’t need to scrub the racks clean at all.

However, to get the worst of the bits off, I did have to scrub for quite a few minutes with my . The hack worked best on the bits that had been under the foil.

To be honest, I wish I’d been a bit more careful covering all the edges, as they were a lost cause when I tried to scrub them. The other bits came off a lot easier. This seems to be due to a reaction between the aluminum foil and the dishwasher tablets.

The method: Place your oven rack inside a big trash bag and set in the sink or on the ground outside. Spray the grates liberally with Easy-Off oven cleaner from 9 to 12 inches away. Close up the bag and let it sit for up to 45 minutes. Then use paper towels to scrub the gunk off the rack. Rinse with warm, soapy water when youre done.

How it went: I carefully pulled the top side of the garbage bag open, grabbed a roll of paper towels, and began wiping away the gunk that had bubbled up on the oven racks. Easy Off is a fan favorite, and its obvious why it takes little to no effort to scrub off the gunk after youve let the product have time to work its magic. I wanted to give this method a 5 because it really does work wonders, but my preferred method is up next, because its nowhere near as fume-y, and doesnt require an aerosol can.

    How To Clean Oven Racks

But how do you clean this complicated part of your oven? Its not difficult. but seeing how wide the racks are, you may need to wash them in a large bowl or your bath.

It may sound weird and unhygienic to use your bath for this process, but you can try to disinfect the bath before starting this process.

If you have a wide bowl then you can still go for it.

Get a dishwasher tablet from the grocery store or the store if you have one.

Then fill your bath with warm or hot water. ensure that the water is enough to cover the rack completely.

After the bath has been filled with hot water, put the rack into the bath, and throw some dishwasher tablets of about 3 to 4 into the warm/hot water.

After that, allow it to soak for five hours, or allow it to sit overnight. Then the next day, or five hours later, wear your rubber gloves if the water is still hot.

If it isnt then get an old toothbrush and begin to scrub the oven rack gently but thoroughly. You will begin to see the loose debris peeling off. Now scrub entirely until the rack is pristine.

At this point, you can throw the water away.

Then fill the bath with some warm water, some bits of dishwasher tablet, and a cup of vinegar.

Allow sitting for twenty minutes. Then afterward, wash the oven racks using a soft sponge or a soft cloth.

Once you are done, rinse thoroughly and dry with a dry kitchen towel.

Now your oven rack is ready for use!

Oven Rack Cleaning Method: Dishwasher Detergent

    • Total time: Overnight
    • Rating: 3

The method:Lay an old towel in the bottom of a bathtub, place the oven rack on top, then dissolve about a 1/2 cup of liquid or powder dishwasher detergent in a warm bath. Let the oven rack soak overnight, then rinse clean with a scrubby sponge and clean water.

How it went: This method is basically exactly the same as the first one, only it doesnt call for dryer sheets, so I was very interested to see how it would go. The soaking part worked just as well, but the scrubby sponge was definitely better at removing baked-on food from the racks than the dryer sheets. I think its safe to say using a dryer sheet in the cleaning process isnt necessary. This method is great if your oven racks arent super dirty, and you have the time to let them soak overnight. Just be sure you have a good scrubbing sponge, and be ready to use some elbow grease!

In the morning, use rubber gloves and safety goggles to open the bags, and be careful not to inhale the fumes. Spray off the racks with the water hose and watch everything dissolve. After rinsing and drying the racks, place back inside your oven.

Cleaning Oven Racks In The Bathtub

Simply fill the bathtub with hot water, completely submerge the racks in the hot water and add ½ cup of dishwashing soap and 3 to 4 cups of your favourite washing detergent. Leave them to soak for a good 24 hours. Return to the bathtub once the 24 hours are up, using either a hard toothbrush or non-scratch scorer, give the racks a good scrub.
