Whirlpool Dishwasher Not Heating
Categories Dishwasher, Home and Kitchen, Whirlpool Dishwasher
Ive had my Whirlpool dishwasher but now it doesnt dry during the drying cycle. I looked into how to fix it and its actually very simple. Heres what I found.
As a general rule, start by running it in diagnostic mode. To put it in diagnostic mode you press any 3 keys except for the power key on your Whirlpool dishwasher and then press the same keys in the same sequence another 2 times all within 8 seconds. After that it will display any error messages.
Underneath the bottom panel there is a sheet of paper that lists all of the error codes as well as how to put your Whirlpool dishwasher into diagnostics mode. When you put it in diagnostics mode it will blink for a while as it is loading. Then give it some time to do its thing.
Below, I will explain what to do from there, as well as, how to fix the most common issues when your Whirlpool Dishwasher is not heating.
Defective Whirlpool Dishwasher Parts
If none of the above measures result in dryer dishes, its possible that one of your dishwasher components is defective. These components are often the cause when a dishwashers drying function malfunctions:
- Failed Whirlpool dishwasher vent: Some dishwashers use a vent to let out damp air after a wash cycle, ridding dishes of moisture. If the vent doesnt open properly this moisture will be left on dishes. A broken vent requires replacement.
- Broken fan motor: Dishwasher vent systems often use a fan to propel moist air through the vent and off dishes. If the fan blades dont turn freely and the fan motor has no continuity, the motor needs replacement.
- Defective Heating Element: Other dishwashers use a heating element to dry dishes after theyre washed. When the heating element isnt operating correctly, your dishes will remain wet. If multimeter testing of the heating element reveals a lack of continuity it needs to be replaced.

Dishes Not Loaded Properly
Overloading and improper loading of the dishwasher are two of the most common reasons a Whirlpool dishwasher doesnt dry effectively. Avoid overloading by leaving adequate space for air to circulate between each item. We also suggest these rack-by-rack loading tips for a better drying function:
- Top Rack: Place glasses and bowls upside down for better rinsing, which promotes faster and more effective drying.
- Bottom Rack: Make sure dishes dont touch and are facing inward for better rinsing and air circulation
- Silverware basket: Avoid nesting by alternating spoons, forks, and knives next to each other. If the silverware basket has designated compartments, put one item in each compartment.

How To Replace Your Dishwasher Heating Element
Your dishwasher is a remarkably self-contained machine. Not only does it wash, rinse, and dry your dishes it also has an internal heating system. The dishwasher heating element can heat water or create heat to dry dishes. The heating element is an essential part of having clean dishes with a basic kitchen setup. The heating element ensures your dishwashing water is boiling hot, and is also why plastics notoriously can only go on the top shelf.
But when that heating element burns out, the signs are unmistakable. Your dishes may be less clean because their wash water is not as hot. Your dishes may be cold and still dripping wet when you open the dishwasher because the element isnt supplying that toasty drying heat. So if your dishwasher heating element has stopped working, heres how to replace it.
Instructions are generalized to cover the average dishwasher in USA, and instructions can vary by model.

Is The Heating Element Working Properly
To test the heating element run a cycle with the Sanitize option selected. If the Sanitize LED is on steady , there is no problem with the dishwasher’s heating element. If the Sanitize cycle has completed, the dishwasher has reached its max temperature, therefore the heating element is working properly. Today’s dishwashers are more energy-efficient and the key to optimal drying performance is proper loading and the use of Rinse Aid.
If the Sanitize LED is blinking , there may be a problem with the dishwasher’s heating element and service will need to be scheduled.
Don’t have the Sanitize option?
To test the heating element run a “1-hour” wash cycle and ensure the “Heat Dry” option is selected. With the “Heat Dry” option selected the total cycle time should take about 1.5 hours. Once the cycle has finished check to see if the dishes are warm. If the dishes are not warm there may be a problem with the dishwasher’s heating element and service will need to be scheduled. Today’s dishwashers are more energy-efficient and the key to optimal drying performance is proper loading and the use of Rinse Aid.

Pull Out The Dishwasher
Position the dishwashers power cord so it moves freely as you pull the dishwasher out from under the counter.
Place a towel under the water supply line connection. Disconnect the water supply line from the water inlet valve and wipe up spills.
Disconnect the drain line from the garbage disposal or sink drain.
Remove the 2 mounting screws from the brackets that secure the dishwasher in the cabinet opening.
How To Put It In Diagnostic Mode Then What To Do
After it has finished it will display the error code on the screen. There is a panel at the front of your dishwasher that will come off if you pry it open with your hands. And inside that space is a sheet of paper that will tell you what all the error codes mean.
Then depending on what the error code is you can do the corresponding repair for it. For example, it may not necessarily be the heating element that is broken.
But, the only way you can know is to run it in diagnostic mode. A full list of all the error codes is also available online on the official Whirlpool website here.

Cause : Faulty Heating Element
The heating element lies inside your dishwasher near the bottom, and helps get the water hot enough to turn it into steam so the aforementioned fan can blow it out and leave everything inside nice and dry. If the heating element fails, the water never gets hot enough to evaporate.
To check the heating element, run a wash cycle using the heated dry feature, and open the dishwasher door in the middle of the dry cycle. It should be steamy hot inside, and if you wave your hand over the heating element , you should be able to feel the heat coming off it.
If theres no heat, you may need to replace the heating elementtry removing it from the dishwasher and then use a multimeter to check the resistance of the heating element. It should measure somewhere in the range of 8-30 ohms. If resistance is infinite, replace the heating element.
Cause : Faulty Vent Fan Motor

The vent fan blows the steamy air out of the aforementioned vent. If the vent door is opening properly but the fan motor has failed, most of the steamy air stays trapped in the dishwasher. Remove the fan motor and use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If theres no continuity, replace the motor.

Whirlpool Dishwasher Heated Dry Not Working
The main advantage of a dishwasher is that you dont need to dry dishes by hand using a tea towel. But, its also nice when it works! So, heres how to fix your Whirlpool dishwasher when the heated dry isnt working.
The first thing to do is put it into diagnostic mode and see if there are any error messages. Following that visually inspect the heating element for any cracks or knobs. A heating element with a crack or knob needs to be replaced. This will sometimes show up as an error message.
Other times though, once you run the diagnostics mode it will start working again. It kind of does a reset on your dishwasher.
Heated Dry Not Selected
Is your Whirlpool dishwasher heated dry not working the way it should? Make sure you select the heated dry function before a wash cycle begins. Selecting this function before the dishwasher starts enables the heating element to be ready for use at the right point in the wash cycle.

Cause : Faulty Support Components For The Heating Element
If the heating element checks out, you may have a heating element control board failure, wiring failure, thermostat failure, or limit switch failure.
Unplug the power to the dishwasher and shut off the water supply, disconnect the drain plug , disconnect the water supply , and pull the dishwasher out from the wall. Disassemble the dishwasher enough to check the wiring connections to the heating element and make sure theyre tight. Check the wiring to the thermostat in the same way if necessary, remove the thermostat and test it with a multimeterresistance should measure near zero ohms.
Your dishwasher may have a limit switch, which is a safety feature designed to switch off the heating element if it gets too hot. If the switch fails, the heating element may not come on at all. Remove the switch and test it for continuity if it fails, replace it.
If none of that helps, you may need to replace the electronic control board for the heating element.
Signs Your Dishwasher Heating Element Is Faulty
While your dishwasher may be hooked up to the hot water line, every dishwasher uses a heating element to heat the wash water up to the appropriate temperature. Found in the bottom of the tub, you may recognize the heating element if you have an electric oven as they serve the same function, in a way. However, there may come a day when your dishwasher starts throwing out some peculiar symposiums. If any of the below are manifesting in your dishwasher, it may be time to replace the heating element.

What to do when your dishes aren’t dry at the end of a wash cycle? Try these fixes first.

Many manufacturers recommend using a liquid rinse aid for proper drying performance. Additionally, if your homes water temperature isnt hot enough to begin with, this can hinder drying performanceso adjust the temperature setting on your water heater if needed.
But if none of that helps, there may be an actual hardware issue with your dishwasher. In that case, check the following.
