General Electric Dishwasher Won’t Start

Replace The Touchpad And Control Panel

GE Dishwasher Won’t Start Fix

If you still havent found the cause of the problem, the next step is to test and possibly replace the touchpad and control panel. To do that:

  • Try to press various buttons on the touchpad to see if they respond.
  • If some or all of the buttons dont respond, this means its faulty and will need to be replaced. If the touchpad is working fine, move on to step 6.
  • If you need to replace the touchpad, you might also have to replace the control panel at the same time, depending on your specific GE dishwasher model .
  • Once replaced, check to see if the dishwasher now starts. If not, move on to step 6.
  • Reset By Disconnecting The Power

In this process, you need to disconnect the main power plug of the dishwasher directly. Then wait for a few seconds and then plug it back. If there is no wall outlet from where you can easily unplug the dishwasher, then go for the fuse board. In the fuse board, you will find a circuit breaker. Turn it off, and this will disconnect the power of the dishwasher.

After connecting the dishwasher again, wait for two minutes to let the dishwasher resume the washing cycle.

Ge Dishwasher Door Wont Recognize Door Closed: Causes/how To Fix

A faulty door latch means that the unit wont recognize that the door has closed. As a result, your dishwasher will refuse to run the cycle after youve loaded the dishes, added the soap, and closed the door. This issue is minor and easily fixable as long as you have access to the necessary parts.

Here are the steps for this repair:

  • Unplug the power to your dishwasher. Use a quarter-inch nut driver to remove the screws securing the lower access panel.
  • Remove the panel and insulation, if any.
  • Turn off the water supply valve.
  • Use pliers to unthread the water supply line fitting from the inlet valve. Use a inch nut driver to unthread screws securing the junction box cover.
  • Pull the lid off.
  • Take a picture of the location of the wires inside the junction box.
  • Untwist wire nuts to disconnect the wires and unthread the strain relief nut and detach the strain relief from the junction box.
  • Disconnect the drain hose.
  • Open the dishwasher door and remove the mounting bracket screws.
  • Adjust the legs, pull it away from the cabinet or any surface that the dishwashers back is to. Use a Phillips screwdriver to unthread the door latch mounting screws. Remove the old latch, and disconnect the wire connector.
  • Connect the wire connector to the new latch. Position the latch in the frame, and rethread the mounting screws to secure it. Slide the dishwasher back in place.
  • Replace screws to secure the mounting bracket. Reposition and secure the wire strain relief.
  • Secure the lower access panel.

    Dishwashers Controls Are Locked

One situation where the controls become unresponsive is when the child lock is engaged. With this mode enabled, any button you press will not respond.

Depending on the model, you may have a dedicated button for the lock, or it might share the Heated Dry button.

To unlock the GE dishwasher, double-tap the Lock button, then the light above it will go off. In other models, press and keep holding the Heated Dry button for 3 seconds until you hear a beep, followed by the light going off.

If you are sure that the controls have frozen due to an error, then you will have to perform a quick reset.

What Does It Mean When Your Dishwasher Beeps 3 Times

GE 3.8 cu. ft. White Top Load Washing Machine

It highly depends on the dishwashers make and model. Generally, a dishwasher will beep three times for three main reasons:

    • The dishwashers door is open.
    • The control board has a problem where it thinks the dishwashers door is open.
    • There is some leakage in the dishwasher, causing the water to collect at the bottom.

Remember, in most cases, the beeping will be in the company of LCD flashing basically, your dishwasher will not start the cycle.

Ge Dishwasher Door Wont Open: Causes/how To Fix

If your dishwasher door doesnt open, it could mean that your entire latch assembly is faulty.

Heres what you need to do in this case:

  • Clamp a long, skinny, Allen wrench between a vice grip. The l-shape of the wrench should be facing away from you.
  • Hook the l-shape into space where the door opens and shift it to the center. You should hit the latch for the door handle.
  • Lift the wrench and then pull the door open. What youre doing is sliding the wrench under the latch, lifting it, and pulling the door open.
  • Once you have the door open, remove dishes if there are any within. The door might not be opening due to a faulty door latch, a door handle mechanism issue, or a door hinge problem. As you most likely dont have technical knowledge of how the various parts are supposed to look like, with some parts being located inside the dishwasher in harder to reach places, it would be best to call a technician in this instance.

Door Latch Or Door Latch Switch

The door latch assembly is a must-have for any dishwasher, and its not just about preventing water from leaking. This essential component also has two functions: the first being to hold the door closed during cycles, which prevents leaks secondly, this part includes switches that supply power to your dishwasher controls!

If the door cant close properly to activate the switches or if theyre defective, then youll have trouble with your dishwasher. Inspect everything from latch assembly to switches for problems and fix them.

If the door switch is defective, their dishwasher will not work even after you close it. To see if this may be the problem for your appliance, use a multimeter and test to make sure that theres continuity coming from the door button. If there isnt any, then replace it.

Door Is Not Properly Closed Open

Most often, the start light will be blinking on its own when the door is opened halfway through. So make sure to close it and close it right.

When you close the door of the dishwasher depending on the model you can hear the latch mechanism.

So if you hear a snapping sound whenever you open and close the dishwasher, thats the latch mechanism engaging/disengaging the door.

Depending on the model, you might be able to figure out if you closed the door properly by listening to this snapping sound. However, even after listening to the snapping noise, if the start light wont stop blinking, then youve probably got a defective door latch.

In cases of power surges, problems with the dishwasher, or adding in dishes after a cycle has begun, your GE dishwasher may need to be reset. Start by pressing the Start/Reset button and waiting. If that option is unsuccessful, try rebooting your unit by cutting the power and waiting before restoring power.

Your Ge Dishwasher Has A Control Board Problem

If youve tried everything else in this guide and you still cant get your GE dishwasher to start despite having power, there could be a problem with the main control board.

And your only best option is to have a new control board installed in the place of the existing one.

The GE WD21X24799 Genuine OEM Dishwasher Control Board is one of the top-rated options that goes for under $100 at the time of this writing.

The main control board is essentially the dishwashers brain, and if it fails, your dishwasher will not start. Because the board is difficult to test, your best choice is to just replace it and see if it solves the problem.

To be clear, replacing the main control board is a much better option and easier than buying a new dishwasher. If you cant replace the board yourself, have professional help you do it at a small fee.

Ge Dishwasher Not Starting Start Button Flashing

If your GE dishwasher doesnt start when you push the start button, and the start button is flashing, it could be caused by a few different things. Here are some possible causes and how to fix them.

One possible cause is that the dishwasher isnt getting power. Check to make sure that the dishwasher is plugged in and that there is power to the outlet. If the dishwasher is hardwired, check the circuit breaker.

Another possible cause is that the door isnt closed properly. Make sure that the door is shut all the way and latched.

If neither of these things seem to be the problem, then there may be something wrong with the start button itself. Try pressing and holding the start button for a few seconds. If that doesnt work, you may need to replace the start button.

    Assess The Timer Motor

GE Dishwasher Won’t Start? Replace Door Latch #WD21X10490

The first thing you should check is the timer motor it is what regulates the dishwashers cycles from start to finish. If the timer motor isnt working properly, or at all, the dishwasher will continuously run.

After ensuring you unplugged your dishwasher or flipped off the circuit breaker switch, remove the control panel face by removing the screws on it and the latch. Open the door and remove the door panel screws and locate the timer motor.

You will see two wires at the top of the motor, remove both of them, label them with tape to tell them apart, and use an ohmmeter to assess the motor function. The setting should be on X1000 and should have a reading between 2,000 and 3,000 ohms. If the number is outside of this range, it needs to be replaced.

    Examine Junction Box Wiring

If your dishwashers power cord doesnt plug into an electrical outlet under the sink, then the power supply is hardwired into the junction box. Check the power cord connections in the junction box. The above video shows how to follow these steps to check junction box wiring.

Note: If youre not completely confident that you can safely complete this troubleshooting procedure, then its time to schedule a service technician to diagnose and repair your dishwasher.

    • Shut off the house circuit breaker for the dishwasher to disconnect electrical poweryou dont want electricity flowing to the junction box.
    • Remove the dishwashers bottom front access panel and toe panel. On most dishwashers, youll need to take out the mounting screws from each side and then pull off the panels.
    • Remove the screw from the junction box cover and pull off the cover.
    • Check the black wire connection and the white wire connection.

Reconnect any loose or disconnected wires. Reinstall the junction box cover and then reinstall the bottom front access panel and toe panel. Restore electrical power to the dishwasher and see if the dishwasher works.

    Test The Door Latch Switch

Remove the inner door panel to access the door latch assembly at the top of the door. Make sure the catch engages the door latch switch when it is inserted into the latch assembly. If all appears to work properly, use a multimeter to test the switches for continuity. With the multimeter set on Rx1, touch the probes to the switch terminals. The reading should be at or near zero. If your reading is different, replace the door latch assembly.

Put The Dishwasher In Service Mode To Reset The Dishwasher

Many GE dishwasher models have a service mode that you can utilize. Some also refer to this mode as diagnostic mode. Regardless of the term, the function is the same.

You can enter this function on most models by holding the Start button down for five seconds. Then, once the Start button begins flashing, hold the button down along with the Select Cycle button for another five seconds.

In some other models, you can enter it by holding down only the Cycle Select button. But, again, consult your instruction manual to see the proper method for your device.

    Ge Dishwasher Not Drying Completely

To remedy a washer that doesn’t fill with water during the wash cycle, remove the unit’s lower rack and tap the cylindrical flood float cover — typically located in the front corner of the compartment — with a wooden spoon or similar utensil to depress it slightly. Sometimes, not running your dishwasher for a week or more can cause temporary failure to start, as the motor’s seals dry out and stick. In this case, remove everything from the washer’s interior compartment and dissolve about 3 or 4 ounces of citric acid — available from GE’s online parts store — in a quart of hot water. Pour the solution into the sump and let it stand for 15 to 30 minutes, then start the washer.

Schedule A Service Technician To Repair The Dishwasher

If the dishwasher still doesnt power up, then a blown fuse, defective user interface control, a failed electronic control board or a broken wire could be preventing the dishwasher from getting power. Have a Sears service technician examine and repair the dishwasher.

Youll likely see the technician perform the initial troubleshooting steps described above. Additional diagnosis requires live voltage checks, which only should be performed by a service technician with the proper training.
