Ge Dishwasher Wont Clean Dishes

Like many problems that a dishwasher can have, not cleaning your dishes the one thing it was designed to do, can have many factors that are causing this issue. Here are several of the most common reasons why a dishwasher might stop cleaning dishes:

Dirty interior: Over time, a dishwashers interior will become dirty from food, grease, and soap scum. Many people think that dishwashers clean themselves when you use them, but this isnt the case. Appliances, even ones designed to clean, will almost always need good cleaning themselves. You can clean a slightly dirty dishwasher by running a cycle with 3 cups of white vinegar poured in the bottom.

Dirty filter: If your dishwasher has a removable filter, it might need a cleaning. In these dishwashers, it is easily accessible below the racks covered by a twist-off cap. Remove the filter and rinse it thoroughly with hot running water. If it is particularly dirty, soak it in hot soapy water.

Broken soap dispenser: The major component that cleans your dishes is soap. If your soap dispenser isnt distributing soap, or at the right time, or not enough of it, your dishes wont come out clean. Typically the issue is due to a jammed spring in the dispenser door, which you can clean using a small brush dipped in hot water and vinegar. If the dispenser door or the spring is broken, it will need to be replaced.

Check The Chopper Blade For Clogs

The chopper blade in the dishwasher dices any food particles that come off the dishes. This helps to avoid a clogged sink or dishwasher line. If too much debris builds up around the chopper screen, the dishwasher can stop draining.

Therefore, if your dishwasher isnt draining, determine if the chopper blade has damage and then clean the debris from the area. If you discover a damaged blade, you will need to replace it.

To replace the chopper blade, follow the steps below:

  • Disconnect the power, open the door, remove the dishwashers lower and upper racks, and set them aside.
  • Remove the retaining nut from the lower spray arm and lift the spray arm off.
  • Find the spring clips on each side of the spray tower attached to the washtubs back wall. Press the clips to release the tower.
  • Release the lower spray arm bearing and remove it from the center of the washtub.
  • Remove the screws holding the filter housing and pump cover in place. Then, you should be able to see the chopper assembly. After removing the chopper assembly cover, you should see the blade.
  • If the blade has damage, replace it.

Most Common Problems With Ge Dishwashers

As with any type of dishwasher or appliance for that matter your dishwasher can experience a variety of problems, particularly related to the flow and drainage of water in the appliance. Some common complaints with GE dishwashers include:

    • The dishwasher isnt draining.
    • The detergent cup fails to work.
    • The dishwasher isnt filling with water as expected.
    • The dishwasher door is leaking.
    • The dishwasher emits a bad smell.

If any of these problems sound familiar, heres what you can do about the issue.

Ge Dishwasher Not Draining All The Way

    My dishwasher won

If your GE dishwasher is not draining all the way, you can check a few things to see if the issue is with the dishwasher itself or the drain system.

First, you can check to see if something obstructs the dishwashers drainage. This could be a clog in the dishwashers drain pipes or a blockage in the dishwashers filter. If there is a blockage, you must remove the obstruction and clean the dishwashers drainage system.

In most cases, the dishwasher will need to be replaced if the problem cannot be resolved. However, if your dishwasher might be defective, please contact GE customer service for more help.

    Obstruction In Water Intake Valve:

This is very common and can be caused by many things such as hair, soap scum, food particles, etc.

    To clear the obstruction:

    • Remove the detergent trap and check it for debris. Clean or replace if necessary.
    • Make sure the sump pump is working properly and that the water intake valve on the bottom of the dishwasher is opening and closing properly.
    • In addition, make sure that there arent any objects that are getting sucked into the dishwasher that are blocking these openings. This can cause damage to your dishwasher and even a fire hazard!

Ge Dishwasher Not Filling With Water

A common reason for a GE dishwasher not filling is the flood float has become stuck. The flood float will typically stop the dishwasher from adding water if there is already too much water in the appliance.

The flood float might become stuck if you run the dishwasher with a clogged disposer. The stuck flood float tells the dishwasher not to add more water, even though theres no water in the appliance. If this happens, youll need to remove the lower rack and tap on the flood float to get it moving again. Once the flood float is unstuck, it should work normally.

Remove Pump And Motor Assembly Parts

Move the pump and motor assembly to a stable work area. While holding the motor shaft, remove the cutter blade, grater, wear ring and retainer, and discard. While continuing to hold the motor shaft, remove the impeller and then remove the motors pump.

The pump should slide off the motor shaft, then you can set it aside.

    Cause # : Blocked Filter

GE Dishwasher Overflows / Wont Drain / Leaks on Floor (GSD3220F00BB Check Valve Replacement)

The second most commonly reported reason is the blocked filter. Food particles clog the filter that can block the drainage system.

Solution: Clean the water filter periodically to ensure that it stays in mint condition. Some GE dishwashers come with ultra-fine and fine filters.

Follow the steps below to clean the water filter in your GE dishwasher.

    To clean the ultra-fine filter

    • Remove the bottom rack to access the water filter.
    • Twist the ultra-fine filter counterclockwise and lift to remove it.
    • Rinse the filter with warm soapy water and use a sponge to carefully remove any stuck food particles. Dont scrub with scouring pads and toothbrushes, as it can damage the ultra-fine filter.
    • To remove any stains or smells, you can also dip the filter in white vinegar for 10-20 minutes.
    • Insert the filter back in its place and twist it clockwise to lock it in its place.
    • Make sure you check the arrow on the fine filter. It must be used as a guide to align the placement of an ultra-fine filter. It is a great idea to take a picture before removing the ultra-fine filter.

    To clean the fine filter

Please note that 1-2 cups of water covering the bottom of the tub is normal on models without an ultra-fine filter in GE dishwashers. In models with an ultra-fine filter, water in the sump is normal, but the water should not cover the bottom of the tub.

    Improperly Installed Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals are installed with a plug in the drain tube. If the dishwasher doesnt connect to the garbage disposal, the plug must remain in the drain tube. However, if the dishwasher connects to the disposal, you should remove the plug.

If you installed the garbage disposal recently, you might not have removed the drain plug.

    Check The Door Latch Assembly

A GE dishwasher will not start if the door isnt closed properly because it will not receive the power to finish a wash cycle. The door latch assembly holds the door closed and also houses the door latch switch, which is what provides power to the dishwashers buttons.

If your dishwasher isnt starting due to this issue, either the door latch isnt securing the door shut, or the latch switch isnt on or providing power to the controls. If you want to check to see if the door latch switch is the issue, you can use a multimeter like this AstroAI Digital Multimeter to check for continuity after powering the dishwasher off. To check for continuity:

Step 1. Unplug the dishwasher from the power source.

Step 2. Remove the inner door panel for access to the latch assembly, usually located at the top.

Step 3. Insert the catch into the door assembly to check if the catch activates the door latch switches.

Step 4. The switches should be activated manually and remove them to check for continuity.

Step 5. On Rx1, touch the probes to the switchs terminals with the multimeter.

Step 6. If the reading is either zero or close to zero, the issue is with the door latch switch. If it is higher, the door latch assembly needs to be replaced.

    Check The Drain For Clogs

The first place to look in your dishwasher is for a clogged drainpipe. In some homes, the dishwasher drain connects with the garbage disposals drain tube under the kitchen sink, and this drain hose can become clogged. If thats the situation youre in, detach the drain hose and clear it out to see if that helps the water flow more easily.

As a note, if you notice any draining problems immediately after installing the dishwasher, it might be that the knockout drain plug on the garbage disposal wasnt removed as expected. You will need to fix this to allow the water to drain.

To prevent draining issues, its also a good idea to look for food debris that could be around the drain line. If you see any bits of food, clear them out and see if that helps with the standing water.

    Check The Dishwasher Filter

Certain models of GE dishwashers have a removable filter. If your model has such a filter, check that it hasnt become clogged with debris.

To check the dishwasher filter, disconnect your dishwasher from its power source and then remove the filter. If you have a filter, it will be near the bottom of the appliance. Once you have the filter out, give it a good wash with soapy water, removing anything stuck on the filter.

While you look around the bottom of the dishwasher, also check the entire sump, or bottom area, to make sure theres no remaining debris or food particles that could make it harder for the appliance to drain.

    Cause # : Excessive Detergent

Adding excessive detergent or using the wrong detergent in your dishwasher can cause drainage problems in GE dishwashers.

Solution: You need to take care of three things to solve detergent-related drainage problems.

  • Use GE recommended dishwashers such as Cascade® Platinum ActionPacs, Finish® Quantum® detergents and boosters for hard water.
  • Make sure you dont use excessive detergent in your dishwasher.
  • If you have hard water at home, always use hard water specific detergent. For people having soft water, it is recommended to use half the amount of detergent.

    The Air Gap Is Clogged

An air gap prevents water from sink drain clogs from backing up into the dishwasher. However, the air gap itself can become clogged with debris over time and requires regular cleaning. If your home has an air gap, clogs can be why the dishwasher doesnt drain properly.

Heres how to clear air gap clogs:

  • Remove the air gap cover.
  • Clear any debris with your hand or a paper towel.
  • Make sure there are no visible clogs in the air gap hose before replacing the cover.
  • Drain Pipe And Garbage Disposal

5 Reasons Why GE Dishwasher Not Draining

Before checking the dishwasher components that could be responsible for the drainage problem, check that the pipe the dishwasher drains into is not clogged. If the dishwasher is connected to a garbage disposal, make sure the disposal is clear of debris. Note that the garbage disposals drain tube that connects to the dishwasher drain hose can become clogged. Detaching the drain hose and clearing the disposals drain tube may fix the drainage issue. If the dishwasher has been recently installed, make sure the garbage disposal knockout plug in the garbage disposals drain tube has been removed.

Turn Off The Power Supply And Water Supply

Turn off the power supply by unplugging it from the outlet or shutting down the circuit breaker to which it’s connected.

Then, turn off the water supply by looking for the water line connecting to the dishwasher. This is a copper or stainless steel line that should be just right under the sink.

You also need to close the shut-off valve under the sink that supplies water to the dishwasher.

    Ge Dishwasher Water Leaks

If you have a GE dishwasher, then you should check for leaks. A leaky faucet or pipe usually causes it.

It can cause staining on dishes, floors, walls, etc. So, you must find where the leak is coming from and fix it.

You can use the following methods to locate the source of the leak:

    1. Disconnect the unit from the outlet.

    2. Take the access panel off the unit.

    3. Remove the three Phillips screws securing the access panel.

    4. Pull away the access panel.

    5. Make sure that all seams and joints are free of water stains or discoloration. See if you can get water if you poke an awl or a screwdriver into the seam or joint. Then, blot up the water using a paper towel or a rag.

    6. Make sure the unit or its components have no dry spots. If there are any, add more liquid soap or baking soda to the rinse aid dispenser.

    7. The drain pump and motor need to be checked if you still have water spots after performing the above steps. These are the two most likely places where a leak can occur.

    8. Check for pinhole leaks where the drain line enters the unit.

    9. Also, ensure the drain hose is not leaking anywhere between where it leaves the dishwasher and where it enters your plumbing system.

    10. If you notice a leak, use a piece of rag or paper towel to blot up the water. Use caution not to over-tighten, or you may cause the leaky part to come off.
