Ge Dishwasher Won T Start But Has Power

Timer Or Electric Control

GE Dishwasher Won’t Start Fix

If you determine that the door latch and door switch are operating correctly, look at the timer or electronic control. The first step of the cycle is to drain any standing water in the dishwasher. If you dont hear the drain running, check out the timer and electric control.

There is a manual timer in some dishwasher models that provides power at the proper sequence in the cycle. The timer supplies power to the pump motor, water inlet valve, heater circuit, and drain pump motor. Electrical contacts located inside of the timer power a small motor.

Follow these four steps using a multimeter to check the timer or electric control.

Ge Dishwashers Door Latch Isnt Working

The door latch is an important component that ensures the dishwasher door cant open during a washing cycle. When you close the door, the latch should click in place to indicate that the unit is ready to get down to work.

However, if you dont hear the clicking, its a strong indication that the door latch is faulty or broken. As such, the unit wont start because the control panel thinks you havent closed the door properly.

Close the dishwashers door and make sure the latch connects to the dishwasher unit. If you notice that that the door doesnt shut properly, have the latch switch replaced.

For a replacement, I recommend the Earthtec door latch lock because its compatible with GE dishwashers.

Do Ge Dishwashers Have A Lot Of Problems

GE dishwashers dont have a lot of problems and their problems arent any more frequent or severe than other brands. GE is a reliable company.

The most common problems GE dishwashers have are water filling issues, water leaks, draining problems, and the appliance suddenly stopping during a wash cycle.

There are also cleaning issues which means the drain can get clogged. However, you are supposed to clean your dishwasher twice a year to prevent that.

If it turns out that these nine reasons are also not what happened to your unit, hold on a little longer because we will try to give suggestions to examine some of the elements and interiors of this unit.

Before we begin, we hope you first turn off all electricity to the unit. The goal is that when inspecting elements and parts, there is no additional risk. If so, proceed with checking in some parts of this dishwasher:

Check The Water Supply

Sometimes, your GE dishwasher may not run when there is no water inside it.

Check the water connection and ensure water flows from the sink outlet to your dishwasher.

Also, check that the water valve is opened to ensure the proper flow of water to the dishwasher, and that its drain function is properly working.

Not Stopping After Full Cycle

An obstruction in the drain line may cause the dishwasher to continue running even after the cycle is finished. The best way to stop the wash cycle is to unplug and troubleshoot the appliance.

To troubleshoot this issue, follow these steps:

1. Turn off the power and remove the access panel.

2. Look into the drain tube using a flashlight.

3. If there are obstructions, remove them.

4. Use a pair of wire-nosed pliers.

Water Supply Not Functioning

If there is no water being supplied to your GE dishwasher, it wont work. The dishwasher needs water to function and among other things, The water valve which supplies water into the dishwasher at low-pressure works together with the unit.

If the water valve is faulty, you could either experience a leak due to excessive water gushing out of the valve, or you could experience a sudden halt in the dishwasher operation.

If your dishwasher is leaking you should check out this post.

There May Be A Problem With The Thermal Fuse

GE Dishwasher Dead Display Diagnosis (GE Dishwasher Has No Lights)

If youve ruled out the door latch and door switch as possible causes for your GE dishwasher not starting, the thermal fuse could be faulty causing your GE dishwasher not to start despite having power.

In my opinion, the thermal fuse is perhaps the most important component in any dishwasher. Without it, the unit would overheat and eventually become useless.

In a GE dishwasher, the catch with the thermal fuse is quite simple. If the fuse blows, the unit stops working, keeping all other components in good condition. As such, replacing the thermal fuse should be enough to restore operation.

    • Disconnect the unit from the power source
    • Check the continuity of the thermal fuse using your multimeter.
    • Replace the thermal fuse with a new one if the one in the unit no longer has continuity.

Now turn the power back on and try to start your dishwasher.

The Ge Units Control Panel Might Be Faulty

Its important to troubleshoot the GE dishwasher control panel to determine whether it could be the reason why the unit isnt starting in the first place.

If you havent located the source of the problem yet, you should consider testing the touchpad and control panel and have them replaced if theyre not working.

    • Try pressing buttons on the touchpad to see if they work.
    • If any or all of the buttons dont work, the device is defective, which means you have to replace the touchpad to get the unit to start working

Depending on your individual GE dishwasher model, you may also need to repair the control panel at the same time as the touchpad. So I recommend that you check your models manual to determine what to do or look up for the information online if you cant trace your manual fast.

    Cancel Child Control Lock

Child locks prevent children from accidentally turning on the dishwasher. So if child locks are activated, this mechanism can prevent your dishwasher from starting.

Check your owners manual for instructions on how to disable child controls. If you do not have a copy, the GE website provides downloadable manuals specific to model numbers.

Usually, for the newer models, you lock and unlock child controls by pressing the Dry Boost pad at the same time as the Steam-Sani, Pre-soak-Sani or Sanitize pads for three seconds.

There are other methods for disabling child locks on newer models. Press and hold the Cycle pad for three seconds. Otherwise, press and hold the Dry or Dry Boost pad and the Steam pad simultaneously for three seconds.

If your model has a lock control light, it should turn off if the child lock is deactivated. The child lock is activated if the light is on.

Ii Malfunctioning Electric Control Or Timer

If the door latch assembly is not the guilty party, you might want to check the electric timer control. This component is linked to the control panel and decides the duration of the wash cycle. If the electric control has gone kaput, the timer wont receive the power needed to start the cycle, which can prevent your appliance from turning on. The same goes if there is an improper connection between the timer and the control panel.

How to test the electric control:

  • Unplug your dishwasher.
  • Locate and remove the timer from your appliance. As previously mentioned, it is usually found in the control panel.
  • If your timer has several contacts, make sure to refer to your models wiring diagram. This will give you an idea of which wires or contacts you have to test.
  • Ready your multimeter by setting it to the Rx1000 setting. Connect to probes with the relevant contacts. Dishwasher timers typically measure anywhere from 2000 and 3500 ohms of resistance, although it may still vary from one make to another. Again, consult your owners manual to be sure.
  • If the reading that you get falls outside of the recommended range, you will have to get a replacement electric control timer.
  • Check Lcd Panel For Leak Detection

Dishwasher photo and guides: Ge Dishwasher Beeps Every 30 Seconds

Some GE dishwashers have a leak detection or floor protection feature, which can keep the machine from turning on. If this feature activates, it likely means the pan in your dishwasher is leaking.

If this is the case, the LCD panel will display the alert Leak Detected. Fix the leak, and the machine will run again.

    Ge Dishwasher Steam Vent Problems

If your dishwasher has a problem with the steam vent. The following steps will help you troubleshoot and fix the issue.

    • You must first rotate the cover counterclockwise, found on the inside of the panel, to remove the defective vent.
    • Take it off the door by lifting it.
    • Pull the vent off the inner door panel once the cover is no longer attached.
    • Replace it with a new one.

    Door Latch Switch Is Defective

The door latch switch is a safety feature that prevents the dishwasher from operating if the door is not closed securely. If this switch is defective, then it will need to be replaced.

To do this, you will need to disconnect the power to your dishwasher and remove the control panel. Once you have access to the door latch switch, use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If there is no continuity, then the switch needs to be replaced.

What Causes A Ge Dishwasher To Not Start

Your GE dishwasher can fail to start for many reasons. You may have had the child lock activated, the door may not have closed properly or there could be a power supply problem.

The thermal fuse may have blown, the control panel may be faulty, or there may be an issue with the timer.

I strongly recommend that you troubleshoot your unit to find out whats causing it not to start and then fix the problem accordingly.

Common Reasons Your Dishwasher Isnt Starting

Dishwasher Wonât Start â Dishwasher Troubleshooting

First things first, please keep in mind that you are dealing with electronic equipment here which can be very dangerous if you are not careful.

Make sure that the appliance is switched off and plugged out before you do anything. Also make sure there is no water on the floor or on your hands before you touch wires or components.

If you have no clue about what the issue might be, try resetting the device. It is pretty easy to do so. Switch off the appliance using the off button then unplug the device for a minute. Switch it back on and check if the issue still persists.

I know this is a very basic thing to do, but a lot of times people forget that this might actually work. It is possible that just like your computer or your phone, a dishwasher can also be stuck because of some random issue.

Resetting the device can sometimes clear those issues.

If the problem still persists lets take a look at some of the other possible reasons.

    Water Supply Is Turned Off

If there is no water coming into your dishwasher, then it obviously wont be able to start washing your dishes! To check if this is the case, open up the dishwasher door and look for a small knob or switch labeled Water Supply.

If this switch is turned to the OFF position, then simply turn it to the ON position and wait a few minutes for the water to start flowing into the dishwasher. Once the water supply is turned on, try starting your dishwasher again and see if it works.

    Problem With Water Supply

Water supply issues can also be responsible when your GE dishwasher wont start. Make sure the water supply valve to the dishwasher is in the on position and assess the water supply hose for kinks or tears. While you can carefully straighten any kinks in the hose, a cracked or leaking hose requires replacement.

If the supply valve and hose are functioning properly, a GE dishwasher not starting may be due to a defective water inlet valve. This valve opens and closes to allow water to enter the dishwasher at the right points in the wash cycle. We suggest that a professional service assess and replace the water inlet valve as needed.

Ge Dishwasher Not Draining All The Way

If your GE dishwasher is not draining all the way, you can check a few things to see if the issue is with the dishwasher itself or the drain system.

First, you can check to see if something obstructs the dishwashers drainage. This could be a clog in the dishwashers drain pipes or a blockage in the dishwashers filter. If there is a blockage, you must remove the obstruction and clean the dishwashers drainage system.

In most cases, the dishwasher will need to be replaced if the problem cannot be resolved. However, if your dishwasher might be defective, please contact GE customer service for more help.

    Dishwasher Running But No Water

    Troubleshooting for GDWF160RSS

When you hear the dishwasher running but no water coming out of the pump, the timer or electronic control mechanisms may be to blame.

There could also be a faulty water inlet valve, a malfunctioning float switch, a broken door switch, a broken drain solenoid, or a damaged water supply line.

Dishwashers that dont get water arent always easy to diagnose. In most cases, its recommended to have a professional look at it.

Issue With The Motor Start Relay

The start relay works in conjunction with the other internal components to provide power to the motor pump. It is usually located next to the motor pump and you can test it in a similar way to the thermal fuse.

You will have to remove the lower access panel to access it.

    In Conclusion

You can diagnose most of the above issues by yourself with very little technical knowledge but if you are stuck anywhere or if you get confused then feel free to call for some professional help.

Also contact the official customer support of your company when the issue arises so it will get officially noticed.

One more thing to note is that if your product is under some kind of warranty then doing repairs by yourself can void this warranty.

Confirm this once before doing anything. Make sure you follow all safety protocols while handling your dishwasher.

Make Sure The Thermal Fuse Is Working

If youve ruled out the door latch and door switch as the cause of your GE dishwasher not starting, the next step is to check the thermal fuse. The point of the thermal fuse is to shut your dishwasher off when it overheats. Sometimes the fuse blows, and this will stop your dishwasher from starting.

Checking the thermal fuse requires doing a multi-meter test to do that:

  • Ensure the power is turned off to your dishwasher.
  • Locate the thermal fuse .
  • Use your multimeter to test the thermal fuse for continuity.
  • If the test shows continuity, move on to step 5, as its working correctly. If it doesnt have continuity, it will need to be replaced with a new fuse.
  • Once the replacement has been carried out, turn the power back on, and attempt to start your dishwasher. If it still doesnt start, move on to step 5.

Check The User Interface Control Wiring

Many dishwashers have a user interface control in the control panel that connects to the electronic control board.

If the dishwasher still isnt getting power, check the user interface control wire harness. The control panel wont light up if the wire harness is disconnected.

    • Shut off power to the dishwasher.
    • Open the dishwasher door and remove the Torx screws from the outer edges of the inner door panel. So the outer door panel doesnt fall off, support it with one hand as you remove the final screws.
    • Check the wire harness connection between the user interface control and the electronic control board.

If the user interface control wire harness is unplugged, reconnect it. Reassemble the dishwasher and restore power.

Ge Dishwasher Not Starting Door Sensor

To start any cycle with a GE dishwasher, the door must completely shut and latch before the process begins. When the dishwasher recognizes that the door is closed, this is caused by the door sensor confirming that a successful latch has been made. Some owners have found though that when their dishwasher doesnt start, the problem is suspected to come from the door sensor itself, therefore, how can this be confirmed and resolved.

If your GE dishwasher is not starting and you suspect the door sensor to be the issue, hold down the Cycle Select and Start buttons for 5 seconds. If the lights on the display are solid, the door is latched. If the lights are blinking, the door is not latched, which is causing the sensor to go off.
