How Does The Water Supply Get To The Dishwasher

GE Dishwasher Center Wash Arm Support Replacement #WD12X20172

If you are wondering how water gets into the dishwasher, follow along. Water supply gets to the dishwasher through a part of the appliance known as the water inlet valve.

This valve regulates how much water is supplied to your dishwasher. The valve links to the primary source of water in your home.

When you turn on the valve, it releases water into your dishwasher through the spraying arms. The water inlet valve is usually at the lower part of your dishwasher, sometimes beside the drain pipe. If there is a problem with the inlet valve, the dishwasher will not fill. Since the dishwasher is powered by electricity, the valve is automatically controlled.

How Do I Fix A Leaking Dishwasher

Apart from being a nuisance, dishwasher leaking can be dangerous, and it can also cause water damage to your floor or cabinetry when not taken care of in proper time. Heres what to check for if your dishwasher is discharging water.

Test Your Float Switch

The inside of every dishwasher uses a mechanical trigger to tell the machine when the basin is full. On many models, the float switch is a round cap that rises and lowers depending on the water level in a dishwasher. The simple solution is to check for any obstructions below the cap that might prevent the switch from lowering.

If there are no interferences, it might be a bad float switch pump. In this case, the switch will need to be replaced, but the process is simple.

How to replace a dishwasher float switch:

  • First, shut off the power supply to your dishwasher.
  • Then, refer to the manufacturers manual for step-by-step instructions on how to access the float switch some models require you to remove the front panel.
  • Once youve located the float switch, open the housing covers.
  • Next, disconnect the wire from the switch, and remove the actuator .
  • Remove the bad float switch.
  • Replace with a new float switch and reconnect the switch and actuator.
  • If necessary, replace the front of your dishwasher, along with any other dishwasher parts the manufacturer instructed you to remove.
  • Review Dishwasher Gaskets

Replacing The Upper And Lower Sprayer Arms

The process for removing the upper or lower sprayer arms is almost identical, so we have combined the instructions with minor differences for one process or the other.

    • Twist the Fastening Nut Counter-Clockwise

Each sprayer arm is secured by a fastening nut at its base. Naturally, this nut is above for the upper arm and below for the lower arm. Open the nut by turning it counter-clockwise.

In many models, this nut twists open easily with your fingers. In many models, this nut is actually a small wheel designed to easily twist open with the fingers. However, if you have an older model, or the nut is stubbornly stuck, you may need to wear work gloves and/or use a pipe wrench to pry it loose.

    • Unfasten the Sprayer Arm

Once the nut is unfastened, the sprayer arm should pull away. For some models, you will also need to remove the non-integral gasket ring. Set all of this aside.

Take a close look at your sprayer arm. Theres a good chance the arm doesnt need to be replaced, just cleaned thoroughly and put back into action. If the spinning joint is crunchy, if the nozzle holes look crusted over, try soaking the sprayer arm in soapy water or vinegar. Soapy water will deal with food residue vinegar will melt chalky water residue from hard water.

After cleaning, decide whether to reinstall the old sprayer arm or toss it and replace with a new one.

    • Align the New/Clean Sprayer Arm
    • If Upper: Adjust Inlet Tube
    • If Lower: Push Down Firmly
    • Secure the Fastening Nut
    • Spin to Test

Dishwashers Water Delivery Tube Is Clogged

The water delivery tube is another reason your GE dishwasher is not spraying water. The delivery tube is connected to the spray arms of the dishwasher. Remove the racks and the spray arms. Observe the position of each item you remove.

The water delivery tube may be clogged with food particles or other forms of debris. You may use a broomstick and stick it through the tube to push out any debris.

You can also run high-pressure water through the tube to remove any particle stuck in it.

    Locate The Dishwasher Spray Arm

Locate the dishwasher spray arm and inspect it visually and physically. Remove the bottom dish rack and manually spin the spray arm at the bottom of the unit. This circular movement will determine if the arm moves without getting stuck.

Exert slight upward pressure on an end by pulling slightly the component should wobble in a vertical manner. Its seams should be solid as dishes wont receive adequate water pressure if they are damaged. If water comes out of the seams, it could cause the whole unit to leak.

If the dishwasher has a spray tower, exert upward pressure on it and then let it drop back to the original position. This should be an easy movement with no hindrance. Remove the top dish rack to perform the same procedure to test the functionality of the upper spray arm .

Whirlpool Dishwasher Upper Spray Arm Fell Off: The Solutions You Should Try

How To Replace A Dishwasher Spray Arm

    1. Bush

First of all, you need to check the bush of the spray arm. The bush is responsible for connecting the spray arm and ensure a sturdy connection. However, since the spray arm keeps moving, the bush is highly likely to get damaged and will lose its capacity. As a result, the spray arm will not connect to the unit and will keep falling off. In this case, the easiest solution is checking the bush and replacing it with the new one. If you have technical experience, you will be able to replace the bush pretty easily, or else, just call the technician.

    2. Obstructions

With the previous sections, we have already mentioned that the spray arm is more vulnerable to clogging, and it could be one of the reasons why the spray arm is falling. To illustrate, when the spray arm is clogged, it wont be able to connect to the bush and will keep falling off. So, we suggest that you take out the spray arm and look for clogs. If you see some built-up in the arm, clear it off with the brush and clean it up. Also, dont forget to dry the spray arm before you attach it to the bush. It is suggested that you clear up the dishwasher for this because it gives a better angle.

    3. Replace The Arm

    Wrapping it Up

The bottom line is that these are the only issues associated with the spray arm. However, if the mentioned solutions dont work, just ask for Whirlpools official customer support .

One Of The Spray Arms Is Not Rotating

On my whirlpool ADG 8516, one of both spray arms is not rotating. I did some online research and made sure the pump is ok, the arm is not clogged, etc Also, i was surprised one arm was ok, while the other was not. So i disassembled the bottom arm , and saw there was no water coming out of the tube its attached to. I took a picture and saw it was shut off by some sort of valve.

I then disassembled the grey tubing and came to this point:

I pushed a bit the round blue plastic piece with the holes around, put everything together again and checked the result. The result was the bottom arm rotating in contrary to the top arm. :-/

So problem not solved but different. I assume the issue is a broken motor which moves around the blue valve.

My question is: Why is that valve there, what is its purpose? When should it rotate? After a couple of washing cycles the top arm rotates again, but the bottom one is again no longer working. Is it a costly repair? Alternatively, can I get rid of the blue thing, or drill an extra hole in it, so water can get back in the bottom arm?

    Thanks
