Problem With Air Gap And Garbage Disposal

Your Frigidaire Gallery dishwasher will not drain water if there are clogs in the garbage disposal and in the air gaps.

To begin with, the garbage disposal and air gap share the same channel. So, if dirt, debris, and foreign objects block one, the other component wont work.

And instead of wastewater draining out of the dishwasher, it starts to flow back into the appliance.

The first thing you need to do is to clean the blockages from the air gap and garbage disposal. Second, keep the problem from recurring by starting the garbage disposal before running the wash cycle. Doing so will clear debris that might otherwise cause blockage.

In addition, clean the air gaps frequently by removing the cap and wiping off all the debris you see using a soft bristle brush or a paper towel.

How To Fix Standing Water In Dishwasher

Removing The Dishwasher The Hidden Screws

Most Frigidaire dishwashers slip into the opening in the lower cabinets. A pair of support brackets hold the dishwasher in place under the front edge of the countertop. Before you do anything, unplug the Frigidaire dishwasher from the power outlet and empty the dishwasher of any dishes or utensils.

When the mounting clips are free of the countertop, you can carefully pull the dishwasher from under the counter. You may need help to feed the power wire and the drain hose if they pass through a partition in the cabinet.

Frigidaire Dishwasher Drain Pump Issue

Another common reason why a dishwasher is not draining is a faulty drain pump. To access the drain pump, youll need to follow the instructions above. The drain pump is usually defective due to a broken impeller or a faulty motor. Pump motors can fail mechanically or electrically. A mechanical fault is usually caused by a broken impeller. If the impeller is damaged, it will need to be replaced. The drain pump can be checked for continuity with a multi-meter to determine if it has failed electrically. If the motor tests negative for continuity, it will need to be replaced.

How Frigidaire Dishwashers Work

When troubleshooting your Frigidaire dishwasher, it helps to have a general understanding of how these handy appliances work in the first place. This will make it easier to identify the various components, their purposes and potential problems that could be impeding their functionality.

In short, a dishwasher cleans and rinses dirty pots, pans, dishes and cutlery but theres much more to it than that. When the machine turns on, it first pumps water inside before heating it to the appropriate temperature. The machine is configured to automatically open the detergent dispenser at the appropriate time in the cycle, ramping up the cleansing process.

Jets of water are then shot throughout the interior of the dishwasher to get the dishes clean. These pressurized jets of water come from the helicopter-like upper and lower spray arms that spin above and below the top and bottom dish racks, respectively. Its similar to the effect youd get when spraying dirt off something with a pressurized garden hose.

The dirty water in the dishwasher is then drained, more water is sprayed to rinse the dishes and the water is drained again. Finally, a heated dry function is used to dry the dishes. The dishwasher then usually provides a signal like a beep to indicate when its completed the job.

Signs/symptoms Of Dishwasher Issues

Some modern Frigidaire dishwashers have an electronic control board with a display that provides error codes when your dishwasher isnt functioning properly. Frigidaire dishwasher error codes could indicate anything from a clog to insufficient water fill or a leak.

If your dishwasher has an electronic control panel, check your specific models manual for the error code key . You can usually find the dishwasher serial model number on the side of the door panel when the dishwasher is open.

However, error codes arent foolproof. Further, they generally only offer a general indication of whats wrong. For example, if you get the error code indicating insufficient water fill, this could be due to your homes water shutoff not being completely open, a pinch in the hose connecting your dishwasher to your water supply or even a broken pipe in the house.

Additionally, error codes may not provide an alert until its too late and serious problems have already occurred, like a dishwasher leak. This is why its usually best to keep an eye out for symptoms of dishwasher problems yourself, so you can troubleshoot potential issues before disaster strikes.

Here are some signs that your dishwasher is experiencing difficulties:

If you notice these symptoms, take a closer look at your dishwasher. It might need repair.

Troubleshooting A Frigidaire Dishwasher Not Starting: A Step

When an appliance doesnt even start we often jump to the conclusion that theres a serious malfunction. But our guide illustrates that there are often some simple common causes when youre Frigidaire dishwasher isnt working. Well also summarize with step-by-step instructions for quick Frigidaire dishwasher troubleshooting.

Under The Cabinet Checking For Kinks

The first order of business is to gain access to the kitchen sinks underside to inspect the drain hose. Remove anything stored in the cabinet. A flashlight is a handy tool for this. Before you go any further, check the entire length of the drain line for kinks or bends. Food waste will collect at kinks or tight bends and create a clog.

If there is a kink, try to straighten the drain line to eliminate the king or any tight bends. Once you straighten the drain line, check to see if your Frigidaire dishwasher will drain. Often, unkinking the drain line will free the clog.

If the drain line is damaged or will not stay straight, you may need to replace the entire drainline to solve the clogging problem permanently. No kinks or tight bends usually mean the clog is elsewhere such as where the drain line connects to the dishwasher or the waste pipe.

A Sink With A Garbage Disposal

Frigidaire Gallery Dishwasher Drain Pump Test

Most Frigidaire dishwashers come with single motor-driven pumps, but the case is different with the Frigidaire Gallery dishwasher.

This one has two drain pumps, one for water circulation and the other one for water drainage. Each motor comes with its impeller.

Check for obstructions from time to time on both pumps and ensure the pump motors are getting power for drainage to take effect.

Here is how you can test the drain pump of the unit:

  • Start by disconnecting the dishwasher from power to prevent electrocution.
  • Locate the dishwasher pump under the spray arm behind the lower access panel.
  • Disconnect it from any connections and then take it out.
  • Set the multimeter to Rx1 mode and start testing for continuity by touching the drain pumps terminal with the probes.

The value you should get while testing for continuity is zero or anything near zero.

Consider replacing the pump if the results you get are not near zero or close to zero because that means the pump is defective.

A Problem With The Drain Hose

The drain hose connects your dishwasher with the drain system in your home. This connection is usually under the sink. If your sink has a garbage disposal, your Frigidaire dishwasher probably connects to the garbage disposer to drain. If there is no garbage disposal, the dishwasher will connect directly to the drainpipe under the sink.

Dirty Dishwasher Filter Or Glass Trap

The purpose of the Frigidaire Gallery dishwasher filter is to sieve out large food particles so the drainage pump doesnt block.

If the drainage pump blocks, used water wont drain out of the dishwasher, and this can result in a bad smell in the dishwasher. Its also likely that food debris can stick on the filter and cause blockage.

To fix this issue, you will need to access the filter inside the dishwasher, clean it and put it back in place.

  • Take out the bottom rack from the dishwasher
  • Gently pull to remove the wash arm with the filter.
  • Rinse the filter with running water.
  • Put the filter and wash arm back together, and fix them back to where they were.
  • Rotate the filter handle to the right and push the wash arm down so that it locks in place.

To prevent the dishwasher from blocking, I strongly suggest that you clean the filter once or twice a month.

One of the most common reasons for water at the bottom of your dishwasher is because food particles or other debris have clogged the drainage system. Check the dishwasher drain and clean the drain basket around the lower sprayer arm, unclogging debris with a wire hanger. Make sure no large objects are covering or blocking the sump area in the rear of the tub.
  • Clean the pumpThe pump consists of two impellers: the upper one pumps water into the dishwasher and the lower one pumps it out to the drain. Sometimes, broken glass and other debris will prevent the impellers from turning, causing water to build up. Remove any debris you find that could be creating these blockages.
  • Clean the sprayer armsGently pop out the sprayer arms located at the bottom of your dishwasher. Check the holes for food debris and clean them out with a wire hanger. Rinse the arms with warm water, ensuring all pieces of food have been removed, and set them aside.

Moreover, a blockage of the impeller can result in improper draining due to food particles and debris. In addition, it will assist you in removing any blockages if you follow the instructions in your user manual.

Occasionally, the motor of the drain pump may fail, preventing the pump from expulsion water. In addition, the failure of a pump motor is usually detected by testing it with a multimeter. However, a dishwasher repair company should replace the pump if it does not show continuity.
