Damaged Latch Or Gasket
A damaged latch or gasket is another KitchenAid dishwasher leaking cause. KitchenAid dishwashers can leak from the door seal if it warps, breaks, or becomes brittle due to age. The seal may also be damaged by too much heat and repeated use and cleaning cycles that create a buildup of detergent on the rubber surface.
If the water is accumulating directly underneath your dishwasher, you likely have a leaking door. Check for any cracks in the door or loose latches that may be causing the leak. To fix the leak, tighten the latch on the door. If that does not work, there may be an issue with the gasket, and it will need to be replaced. This is the rubber seal around the door of your dishwasher. If its damaged, you can replace this easily.

Reasons Why Kitchenaid Dishwasher Is Leaking

Kitchenaid dishwashers use water to clean the dirty dishes that you load inside. Typically, these dishwashers have no problems keeping all of the water and suds contained inside the appliance. So, why would a Kitchenaid dishwasher be leaking onto your kitchen floor?
The most likely reason for a Kitchenaid dishwasher to leak is a faulty water inlet valve. Water could be leaking from the valve itself, or it might be stuck in the open position causing an overflow inside. Damaged seals or gaskets on the diverter motor or around the door could also let water through. The same could also happen from the drain pump or its hose.
Lets take a closer look at the possible reasons your Kitchenaid dishwasher is leaking, and what you can do to fix it.

Remove The Old Gasket And Clean The Channel
Grasp one end of the gasket with your fingers or a pair of needle-nose pliers. Remove the old gasket by pulling it out of the recessed channel. Fix.com recommends pushing down on the gasket at the bottom, as this will release the gasket. Pay attention to the orientation of the gasket as you remove it so that you can install the new gasket with the correct side out. Clean the channel and dishwasher door with a paper towel or soft rag. Be sure there is no debris remaining in the channel.
Press The New Gasket Into The Channel

Hold the new gasket in the middle so that an equal amount hangs down on either side, instructs Sears PartsDirect. Use your fingers to press the center of the gasket into the channel, starting at the top center of the dishwasher. Continue pressing the gasket into the channel across the top and then down one side of the dishwasher tub. Press the other side of the gasket into the channel in the same manner.

Damaged Door Gasket Or Seal
As a general rule of thumb, any appliance that involves the use of water will have a number of gaskets or seals around several of its components. Your Kitchenaid dishwasher is the same, and one of the most important seals on it is the one around the door.
This seal is crucial because it prevents water from leaking out from the doors sides whenever youre running a dishwashing cycle.
Sometimes referred to as a gasket, this part forms a tight seal whenever you shut the dishwasher door. It not only prevents water but also stops suds and food bits from coming through the door.
Is The Dishwasher Level
Make sure the dishwasher is level. The dishwasher must be supported by the leveling legs and rear wheels and must be flat on the floor.
NOTE: Some models will have four leveling legs. The dishwasher must also be square in the cabinet. If the tub opening is not square, the door will not seal properly. This is the responsibility of the customer or installer.

Faulty Water Inlet Valve
Your dishwasher gets water from your main line through the water inlet valve. To determine if there is a leak from the underneath of the machine, remove the bottom kick plate at the back, hot water comes in through one of three tubing systems: rubber hose , copper tube , or braided material .
Look for the supply line and trace it to the valve inlet to check that it is tight with no leaks or cracks. Look for symptoms of trouble on the rubber or plastic outlet hose coming back out of the valve. Be sure to also check the plastic of the water inlet valve and the injector on the side of the tub. To check for dishwasher leaks, leave the lower kickplate off and watch the washing cycle.
If your dishwasher continues to fill above the heating element after lowering the float switch and opening the door latch, there may be a problem with your inlet valve.
Using The Wrong Detergent
Are you using dishwasher detergent or sink soap? Be sure to use the right type of detergent in your washer. Dishwasher soaps are created for dishes without creating bubbles that cause an overflow, and if theyre not working well enough, maybe its time for a change. Using too harsh types of cleaners can also lead to cracking and erosion on the bottom floor inside your dishwasher tub.
Some dishwasher detergent/soap will cause too much sudsing, making a mess around the door and may leak out past the door. To solve this problem, change your detergent to one made specifically for use in the dishwasher.

Are There Items Between The Door Seal And The Tub Of The Dishwasher
Check that there are no items such as silverware stuck between the door seal on the dishwasher door and the tub of the dishwasher. This will cause the door to not shut or seal properly.
Check both racks for items that may be stuck and protruding. Remove any item that is protruding outside the rack.
Check for large food particles around the door seal. Large items could cause the door to not shut or seal properly.
Replace The Dishwasher’s Lower Rack
Place the lower rack back into the dishwasher. Close the door and lock it. Leave the door closed and locked for at least three hours to give the new gasket time to conform to the door. Run the dishwasher and check for leaks.
Things You Will Need
Paper towel or clean, soft rag
Utility knife
Tip
If the new gasket feels hard or dry, soaking it for a few minutes in a sink full of hot water will soften it and make it easier to fit into place. Another option is to blow warm air on the gasket using the low heat setting on your hair dryer.
Most dishwashers have a lower seal as well, which is generally a much more involved job requiring removal of the door. Make it a point to periodically clean the surface of the door where the gasket seals. Sticking, torn gaskets are the cause of most door seal leaks.

Stuck Or Clogged Spray Arm
As water is forced through the dishwasher spray arms, it sprays and covers the dishes in detergent. All dishwashers have a lower arm that is located at the bottom of the dishwasher, and some models also have middle or upper arms below the top rack on top of the tub.
The pressure of the water being sprayed can cause damage to the plastic spray arm or metal head which alters its ability to disperse water evenly. This can result in a leaky dishwasher door at the bottom where theres no sealant for protection from incidental contact with water. Replace the broken spray arm to solve the KitchenAid Dishwasher Leaking problem.

Check Hose Clamps & Hoses
Often, the hoses and clamps on KitchenAid dishwashers will need to be tightened. KitchenAid dishwasher connections are prone to leakage due to this problem. The connection at the top of your Kitchen Aid lower arm may also leak if it is not connected securely enough in its tube connector below the waterline.

How It Fails:
If you notice your Kitchenaid dishwasher leaking, particularly from underneath, then the most common reason is that the water inlet valve is faulty. Thats because the valve is located on the bottom of the appliance, hidden behind the toe panel .
When this happens, water will leak out from the inlet valve itself and flow directly onto the floor underneath.
Alternatively, a faulty water inlet valve can also be stuck in the open position. That will cause far too much water to flow into the dishwasher, causing water to leak from around the door.

How To Fix:
To fix this, youll need to replace the diverter motor seal with a new one. Then, youll be able to access that seal from inside the dishwasher.
- First, though, youll have to remove the diverter tube assembly that sends water to the various spray arms.
- Once youve taken that out, you can twist open the diverter cap and see the seal that youre looking for.
- The seal will be wrapped around a white plastic stem.
- Remove the old seal and replace it with the new one. The seal has a flat side and an open side. The flat part is meant to face down when you push the seal into place.
- Lastly, reassemble the diverter tube assembly.
