How To Clean Your Washing Machine Using Dishwasher Detergent

Lately, there’s been an influx of products on the store shelves that advertise that they can clean the leftover soap scum out of your washing machine and also remove the musty/sour smell. Most are priced around $10 a bottle and according to various reviews I’ve read – work with scattered results.

Here’s a more economical choice that I stumbled across while scouring the internet – and one that I can vouch for: Use powdered dishwasher detergent!

The various posts that I encountered that suggested this method all reasoned that the ingredients of dishwasher detergent were similar to what these companies were putting in their “washing machine cleaners”. In addition, they reasoned that dishwashers saw the same level of dirt as a washing machine and they always end up remaining spotless inside. Plus – most of us have dishwasher detergent around and it costs much less than the other products.

How did it work? I actually had good results. While my washing machine didn’t necessarily smell, I figured that it probably had a lot of built-up gunk in it seeing as it’s almost 15 years old. I made a point to be around the sink when the initial wash water drained out and I was amazed at the amount of gunk that made its way out of the machine.

I should also point out that my washing machine is a top-loader, but I’ve read that you can also use this process on front-loaders, too.

The process:

Good luck – and feel free to share your experiences.

Garage And Driveway Stains

Got oil, transmission, or other car fluid stains on your driveway or in the garage? Automatic dishwasher detergent to the rescue. You can probably figure out the routine by now, or follow this: Mix 1/2 cup of dishwasher detergent powder with enough hot water to make a thick paste in a plastic container. Scrub the paste onto the stained surface , allow it to sit for a few minutes, then rinse it away with your garden hose.

Can You Wash Hats

Yes, you can wash your hats. And you should, as they get dirty, too! To properly wash a hat, we recommend checking the care label for specific advice for the type of hat and material.

However, there are different ways to wash hats. You can do a deep clean or you can spot clean hats.

Spot cleaning is more for surface level stains from water, food, sweat or other elements. Not every kind of hat can go in an appliance. So you may need to spot clean your hat when it gets dirty, rather than putting it in a machine.

Why You Shouldn’t Use Liquid Dish Soap

Ordinary dish and hand soaps are intended to create lots of foamy suds. If you fill the soap container in your dishwasher with ordinary dish liquid, the resulting suds will fill your dishwasher with suds and then overflow from the appliance to the floor.

Only detergents that are specially formulated for dishwashers should be used in these appliances. These create no suds during the cycle. There are also ways to make dishwasher detergent alternatives right at home.

If you have used the incorrect liquid detergent for a cycle, you may need to run the wash or rinse cycle a second time, without detergent, to rinse your dishes and clear out the soap suds and residue. You’ll also have to clean the slippery mess your dishwasher made all over the floor!

Likewise, dishwasher detergent is not recommended to manually wash dishes. Although your dishes will come clean, the lack of suds may cause you to add too much detergent to the water, which will make it difficult to properly rinse your dishes.

So Can You Use Washing

Using dishwashing liquid in the washing machine is not a good idea. Washing machines work better with products specifically designed for them, and using dishwasher soap in the washing machine creates much more foam than using a laundry detergent â so you risk damaging the machine .

Of course, itâs always safer to follow the manufacturerâs instructions and use laundry products in the washing machine, so here is a guide to the various laundry products you can use in the washing machine:

Many different kinds of stain remover are available, either for direct application to the stain or for adding to your wash. There are multiple different types for different kinds of common stains. They work by dissolving, emulsifying, digesting or disguising stains, and are stain-specific in their function. You can often skip a stain remover and use a laundry detergent like Persil small & mighty as a pre-treatment.

Surprising Uses For Dishwasher Detergent

Since dishwasher detergent has a stronger PH than laundry detergent, it is excellent for washing grimy, oily things like dishes. You can also use it to wash oily stained clothing in your washing machine.

First, it is best to rub some dish soap, not dishwasher detergent, on the affected areas and then toss it directly into the washing machine with some dishwasher detergent. Rubbing in some soap beforehand will ensure the item cleans easily in the washing machine.

You can also use dishwasher detergent in toilets with nasty stains on, and in them. Stains take some scrubbing to remove with the toilet brush, but if you pour some dishwasher detergent onto the stains, and let it soak for a bit, and then scrub, it will work unbelievably well and remove all the nasty stains.

If you have an oil stain on the garage floor or outside on your driveway, you do not have to buy any particular cleaning product for it. Then use your dishwasher detergent. It will effectively clean away stains and often at a fraction of the cost of purchasing a specific household cleaner.

How To Wash Tights In The Washer

To wash tights in the washing machine, you should put them in a mesh laundry bag or pillowcase to prevent them from getting tangled. You should also wash them on a delicate cycle with cold water and mild detergent. You should not put tights in the dryer, but rather hang them to dry.

Tights are extremely delicate, so it is best not to store them in the laundry with the rest of your clothes. Follow these simple four-step instructions to ensure that your tights are properly washed and protected. You can wash your tights once every two wears, and thicker tights after every three wears. Warm water and mild laundry detergent are the best ways to wash tights. By rinsing them in sugar water, you can also extend their shelf life. Do not dry tights in the dryer. If you are required to wash them, place them on the side of the machine and use a delicate cycle.

Yes, you could put laundry detergent in your dishwasher. Should you? Probably not.

One reason is that you likely void the warranty on the appliance if you use a product not made for dishwashers. You may be exposing yourself to toxins, too. The detergent itself may be the same from one product to the other, but laundry detergents may contain brighteners, fragrances, stain removers, and anti-soiling chemicals that you don’t really need to be volatilized by the heat of your dishwasher so that you breathe them. The ingredients in laundry detergent might not rinse completely from your dishes.

If you are desperate for a way to wash your dishes, you can try cleaning them in the sink using other types of soap or detergent. You could try bar soap, liquid soap, or bath gel. Shampoo might leave a residue on your dishes. Laundry detergent might leave a residue, too, but at least you would have more control over rinsing in the sink compared with the dishwasher.

Features To Consider For Dishwasher Detergents

Heres what to take into consideration when choosing dishwasher detergent for your dishwasher.

    Your needs and budget

What does a typical dishwasher load look like for you? If youre in a hurry and always running the dishwasher, the convenience of pods might trump the cost-effectiveness of powder. Looking for an economical detergent option? Gels and powders might be a better choice for your wallet.

If you wash a lot of glassware, gels and pods are a better option than powders, which can leave residue and marks on your cups and glasses. Do you wash your pots and pans in your dishwasher? Pods offer superior cleaning power to get pots looking shiny again.

    Number of loads

Most dishwasher detergent packaging shows an estimate of the number of loads youll get out of one container. Buying in bulk will save you money in the long run. But watch out, detergent goes stale if left unused.

    Price

Good-quality dishwasher detergent makes cleaning your dishes more efficient by reducing the need for a second cleaning. The cost difference isnt significant from one form of detergent to another, but performance varies greatly. Consider spending a little extra to ensure you get sparkling clean dishes every time you run your dishwasher.

Powder dishwasher detergent ranges between $0.10 and $0.30 per load. Its easy to improperly measure this type of detergent, however, and end up wasting it.

What Are The Disadvantages Of Using Dishwasher Soap Instead Of Regular Detergent

Generally, there is no specific harmful effect of using dishwasher soap for washing clothes. You can use dishwasher soap once or twice for washing clothes when you dont have detergent. Also, dishwasher soaps usually cause no damage to a washing machine. Still, using dishwasher soap instead of detergent has some disadvantages. The following points will state those disadvantages-

    1. Dishwasher soaps generate more foam and suds than detergents. The excess suds remain inside the washing machine as a washing machine is capable of clearing a small amount of suds. In that case, you might face difficulties while cleaning the inner portion of the washing machine.

    2. Dishwasher soaps cant wash clothes as detergents can do. Detergents are specifically prepared with certain chemical components for washing clothes in better ways. Dishwasher soaps dont include all those chemical components. Thats why dishwasher soaps are less efficient than detergents in terms of cleaning clothes properly. Thats because of the absence of some specific chemical cleaning components that detergents consist of.

    3. You might notice some white spots on your clothes after washing your clothes with dishwasher soap. Those spots can remain permanently on your clothes. Cloth-washing detergents leave no spots or marks on clothes.
