Tips For Using Mod Podge

Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge, Is It Really All That? | Easy Cricut Vinyl Project
  • I like to use a matte version of Mod Podge. Its a personal decision, but I dont like the shine. There are many other Mod Podge finish products available
  • You can use a throw away foam brush or a normal paint brush. Foam brushes can also be washed, depending on how long they sit.
  • Prep the surface you are covering. You will want to make sure it is clean. Then, youll want to lightly sand the surface. Make sure you then wipe it down to remove dust and then let it dry completely.
  • You do not want to use photo paper. The Mod Podge is supposed to soak through the paper, so youll want to photocopy your image onto normal white computer paper. If the original paper is too thick it wont adhere correctly.
  • I like to put my Mod Podge onto a disposable paper plate for easy access and clean up.
  • Paint your item first and your paper second. Put a thin layer of Mod Podge on the item. Then, add a thin layer to the paper, focusing on the edges last. During the time you are working on the paper, the Mod Podge on the item has dried a tad and is sticky. This is perfect. Stick down your paper.
  • Once your paper is down, gently smooth out the paper with your finger, a credit card, a plastic ruler or a pan scraper. This will help keep bubbles out of your project. You can also get a Mod Podge decoupage tool or squeegee .
  • Let the Mod Podge set and then you can sand the edges of your project. You can use sand paper or a nail file.

Can you use a Transparent ceramic paint over the dishwasher safe medium?

    Wednesday 5th of January 2022

That is a good question – I’m not sure. If you are talking about for firing it, no – you can’t fire Dishwasher Safe. Which I think you need to do to that ceramic paint to make it work?

Is there a way to remove disheasher safe modge podge from a ceramic deviled egg plate? I painted it on 12 hours ago and I sat it in our mini oven to dry and well my hubby didn’t see it in the oven and turned it on to preheat…..

Long story short: I have brown discovered spots all over it and its an egg plate so its not easily “scraped off” Can the modge podge be removed? If so, what do I use?

    Friday 31st of December 2021

Hi Courtney! I have a post about that: https://modpodgerocksblog.com/how-to-remove-mod-podge/I would try soaking it. Although with the baking, I don’t know if that will work. I’ve never experienced the brown issue. Sorry that happened to you!

    Great!

I glitter wine glasses and although I haven’t used this is the dishwasher , it does provide a great waterproof sealant. Other mod podge goes white if it’s in contact with water for too long, this doesn’t. Will be using this in the future instead of standard gloss mod podge. I use this for all layers: mod podge, glitter mod podge, glitter brush off excess glitter, final coat of mod podge and leave to dry. That’s it! I don’t find the dishwasher safe mod podge as glossy as the gloss mod podge – for me that’s great, I don’t like the glossy sealant/mod podge as it takes away the effect of the glitter and you end up seeing brush strokes on the final coat and gives it a ‘plastic’ look rather than a glitter look, which is what I aim for. This mod podge doesn’t do that. It’s glossy but not too much which is exactly what I want. Great stuff!

    Your Mod Podge Questions Answered

I have received many questions both in the comment section and in email. Hopefully, other peoples questions will help you answer some of your own.

I have an old wood project that has scrap paper Mod Podge already. Can I put new paper over and Mod Podge or do I need to take the old off first and sand?

Applying Mod Podge right on top of the old should be fine unless you are really concerned about a super smooth texture. In my experience, there is no additional bubbling or problems that occur. The biggest concern would be the texture or added thickness. If smoothness is a concern, sanding would be appropriate.

I have just finished Mod Podging about 150 tiny pumpkins for a wedding. The Mod Podge has dried cloudy. Any ideas to help?

I have not experienced projects drying cloudy. I looked at a forum for help with this one. Heres what I found:

How thick did you put the Mod Podge on?? Because unless you are really glopping it on there, that shouldnt happen! If the coats are too thick, it will get a cloudy-looking effect It works best to do about 3 really thin coats than one or 2 thick coats.

There is more in that forum discussion about whether to water down Mod Podge, so you might want to explore further if you are experiencing a cloudy result. It should dry clear.

Are you wondering where to buy Mod Podge in stores and online? This is your guide to the retailers, with formula and pricing information.

Are you wondering where to buy Mod Podge? Youve come to the right place! I get asked all the time where the best place is to buy Mod Podge formulas what they carry and how much it is. So Ive put together this post for you.

This guide doesnt exhaust every retailer, but it covers the major ones. I used my local stores to gather all the info!

How Long Should You Let Mod Podge Dry

Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge Mugs and Wine Glasses

Allow 15-20 minutes in between coats. If lightly sanding between coats, I would allow more drying time. Mod Podge will dry to the touch within a few hours. It will be cured in four weeks. For more special and involved projects, I would definitely take the time to cure before the project has heavy use.

    Is Mod Podge Waterproof

No, Mod Podge is not waterproof. A little bit of water will not destroy your project, but sitting water or excess exposure can ruin it.

There are some Mod Podge products that have higher resistance to water, but as far as I know there are no completely waterproof versions of Mod Podge.

Here are some of the Mod Podge products that are more water resistant:

    What Are Mod Podge Uses

Crafters use Mod Podge for a wide range of uses. This product can be used on wood, glass, plastic, canvas, ceramics, metal, terra cotta and cardboard.

Mod Podge even has a fabric version now so that you can do projects on shoes, pillows, napkins, bags or clothing. I have not yet used the fabric version, so I cannot give tips for this particular project. My plan is to change that soon.

    Consider The Benefits And Drawbacks

  • 1Know that homemade Mod Podge is not the same as store-bought Mod Podge. When making and using these recipes, keep in mind that homemade Mod Podge is not the same as store-bought Mod Podge. There are several differences between the two, and this section will address them.
  • 2Keep in mind that homemade Mod Podge costs less than Store-bought Mod Podge. Store-bought Mod Podge can be very expensive, so it is no surprise that many crafters attempt to make their own recipes out of materials many of them already have at home.
  • 3Understand that the quality between the two is different. Homemade Mod Podge is usually made using watered-down glue, so it lacks some of the properties that store-bought Mod Podge has. Store-bought Mod Podge can be used as both an adhesive and sealant, making it durable. The homemade version is less-adhesive, and lacks varnish or sealer.=
  • To make your homemade Mod Podge more durable, consider spraying your project with an acrylic sealant after the Mod Podge has dried.#Know that the finish differs between the two. Store-bought Mod Podge comes in all sorts of finishes from glossy, to satin, to matte. It even comes in glow-in-the-dark and sparkling varieties. Unless you add varnish or glitter, your homemade Mod Podge will be matte.
  • Flour-based Mod Podge will may leave behind some residue or a grainy texture.
  • How Do I Keep Bubbles Out Of Mod Podge

Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe Gloss Sealer, Glue and Finish, Clear, 8 fl oz ...

Although this was addressed in my first ten tips and my reader questions, I want to address it really quick here too. Using a smoother tool will be helpful. Always smooth from the center out to push air pockets to the edge and out. If bubbles do occur, try using a pin to pop the bubble and then work down with your finger of gently with a smoothing tool.
