Control Board Or Timer Problems
About this: All dishwashers have either a timer or a control board, both of which act as the appliances brain.
That brain has plenty of electronic and electrical components. Together, those components send electrical signals and power to components like the dispenser, sensors, and many other parts, to turn on or off at the right times.
Older dishwasher models have timers that do the same thing. A timer has fewer electronic parts but does the same job of triggering specific components to function at particular parts of a wash cycle.
Whats happening: The final thing to consider in your troubleshooting process is the dishwashing machines brain. When that part is faulty, it wont trigger the dispenser to open even though it should.
As a result, the dispenser doesnt release any of the rinse aid youve poured inside.
How to fix it: Main control boards and timers dont fail often. Sadly, its no longer practical to attempt a repair when they do.
Instead, a total replacement is the most straightforward solution to this problem.
Replacing The Rinse Aid Dispenser

Open Or Cracked Dispenser Cap
About this: When you need to refill the dispenser with rinse aid, youll have to open a cap. Depending on your dishwasher brand and model, that could mean opening a twist cap or flipping a cover open.
Once youve filled the dispenser with enough rinse aid, the cap or cover plays a crucial role. It ensures that the rinse aid stays where it belongs, even when you close the dishwasher door, until its the right time for it to be released.
Whats happening: Another reason your dishwasher fails to dispense rinse aid is the dispenser cap is loose or damaged.
The cap might not seem like a critical part at first. But the truth is that it plays a crucial role in ensuring your dishes come out clean.
An open or cracked cap will let the rinse aid flow out whenever you close the dishwasher door. Then, itll be empty by the time its supposed to release into the wash cycle.
The kitchenware inside your machine will have water spots on them, and theyll take longer to dry. From your perspective, it might seem like the dishwasher isnt dispensing rinse aid correctly.
How to fix it: Firstly, inspect the dispenser cap closely. Check for any foreign objects or buildups preventing that cap from shutting tightly.
If the cap or cover is damaged, youll have to get another one to take its place. Thankfully, most dishwasher brands sell replacement caps, so getting a new one shouldnt be a challenge.
Whirlpool Du943pwkq0 Not Dispensing Rinse Aid
My Dishwasher does not seem to be dispensing rinse aid. We have lived in our house for about 5 months and after the initial fill, we have never had to refill it and it is still full. the dishwasher gets run about every 2-3 days.So far I have checked the rinse aid dispenser itself, which seems to function normally if operated by hand . Doing this makes rinse aid drip out of the cap into the dishwasher when the door is vertical. I also ran a simple rinse cycle with the inner door closed but the outer door still open to see if the motor was actuating, but it is not. I would guess it is either the board or the motor, but I would like to verify which. I also wonder how much rinse aid is supposed to dispense each time? It only dispenses maybe a half of a teaspoon or less each time is this sufficient? Thanks.

Why Is My Dishwasher Using Lots Of Rinse Aid
Check the rinse aid cap. If the o-ring on the cap is damaged or not sealing properly, you may need to replace the cap. If the cap is okay and you are not able to adjust or reduce the amount of rinse aid dispensed, you will likely need to replace the dispenser assembly.
Do you need rinse aid with dishwasher tablets?
The rinse aid and salt functions are included in the tablet, along with other features. As a result, the customer no longer has to add salt and rinse aid. In areas with hard water, regenerating salt is required in dishwashers in order to soften the water in the ion exchanger, thus preventing limescale from building up.
Will Rinse Aid Also Help Dry My Plastics More Effectively
You might observe that plastic items including Tupperware still have water beads leftover after a dry cycle. This is because plastics are hydrophobicthis means they are less likely to attract to water and take longer to dry compared to glass surfaces. Dont be alarmed if your plastics still have beading water left behind when using rinse aidthis is relatively common and wont damage your plastic items.

The Wax Motor Of The Unit Is Defective
In new models of the dishwasher, a wax motor is installed by the manufacturers to open the door and free the cleansing powder. If the wax motor becomes defective it will not open the door to let out the detergent.
It behaves like an alternator when operated by the control of the unit and the piston runs the system that will free the lock for the door of the dispenser.
If the motor failed to its function then you will have to fix the wax motor in the appliance.

Should You Be Using Rinse Aid
The main reason to use a rinse aid is to get rid of water spots, which can be particularly problematic if you have hard water. You probably have hard water if there is a white residue around your faucets or drains, soaps and shampoos dont lather easily, or you see a ring around the bathtub. Youll probably also see poor cleaning results from your dishwasher, like spotting or filming.
Another reason to use a rinse aid? It makes your dishes dry faster, which is helpful if youre skipping the heat cycle to save energy, or if you notice that your dishes are still wet when your heat cycle finishes.
On the other hand, if youre getting good results from your dishwasher, you may not need a rinse aid. Why buy yet another cleaning product when you can do without?

Run The Empty Dishwasher
After opening the rinse aid compartments aperture to its highest setting and purging the dispenser , now comes the final step.
First, ensure that your dishwasher is empty. Youll also want to remove the cap from the rinse aid dispenser and set it to maximum. That will ensure that the most amount of water can go through the dispenser as possible.
When all is ready, select the longest dishwashing cycle your appliance has, and set the water temperature to the highest level available.
As the appliance goes through its cycle, itll rinse all parts of its compartment, including the rinse aid dispenser. The hot water will help to wash away anything remaining dirt or debris that you didnt wipe away or purge in Steps 2 and 3.
If youd like, you can also add a bottle of dishwasher cleaner to the process. That will maximize your results in terms of cleaning the rinse aid dispenser and the appliance as a whole.
Remember: Once the wash program is complete, dont forget to replace the rinse aid dispenser cap!
Dishes Blocking The Detergent Hatch
The first thing to check for is accidental and avoidable causes. Mainly, check to see if the way you load the dishwasher blocks the soap hatch. Large pans and cutting boards have the potential to press up against the dishwasher door when the door is closed. If this also presses against the closed hatch for the soap compartment, then the soap cant open and therefore wont dispense. You may notice that the latch is released and soap has dribbled out but was unable to fully enter the dishwasher cycle. Alternately, the pressure may have clicked the soap dispenser latch closed again after releasing it.

Clean Around The Rinse Aid Compartment
The next part youll want to clean is the rinse aid compartment itself. Thats the part that holds the rinse aid all through the dishwashing cycle.
Firstly, take a wet cloth and wipe around all of the parts that you can reach. That will allow you to remove any buildup of dirt or food bits that might have gotten stuck there. It would also help to open the dispensers aperture to its maximum so you can reach more parts and flush them out with water.
Depending on the brand and model dishwasher that you have, you might be able to adjust the rinse aid feature to its highest setting. Doing so will open the compartments aperture to the widest size possible making it much easier to rinse.

What Will Happen If I Dont Use A Rinse Aid
While the results of not using regular rinse aid in your dishwasher will likely not be catastrophic, it can have a noticeable impact on the quality of your dishwashing cycles and the long-term appearance of your dishes. If you dont use rinse aid for dishwashing cycles, your dishes will still dry utilizing the heat from the dishwashers dry cycle. However, you might experience water spots from water lingering for too long on each dish. This can be particularly apparent on fine china and expensive, high-quality glassware. In the short term, glasses will come out looking less shiny, sparkly and clean. Over time, failure to use rinse aid can even result in permanent scratching, marking and etchings. Dont take your chancesuse rinse aid to ensure the best dishwashing effectiveness and safety for your most prized dishware.
Problems With The Dispenser Door
If your dispenser door isnt releasing detergent, then it could be because or a wide variety of problems. Dispenser doors arent invincible so if you notice any damage to them it could easily be causing them to not release properly, if your dishwasher is an older model then it could also simply be due to age. So, you might need to call in our dishwasher experts to handle a replacement for you.
But if your dishwashers dispenser door looks fine then examine in more closely because sometimes problems arent instantly noticeable. One common problem is the spring and hinge pin on the door not working properly. If either the pin or hinge is damaged in some way your door might look fine, but it wont be able to dispense the detergent.

Should I Use Rinse Aid
Whether or not you should use rinse aid depends largely on whether or not youre happy with the condition of your dishes after a wash cycle. If you do use it, you can usually find the reservoir near the soap dispenser.
For the most part, if your glasses are spot-free and youre satisfied with your dishwashers drying abilities, you can do without rinse aid. But, because “wet dishes” are the most frequent complaint among surveyed dishwasher owners, you should consider giving rinse aid a try.
Alternatively, certain brands of dishwasher tablets have an all-in-one mixture that contains both detergent and rinse aid, saving you from buying a bottle of rinse aid every 60 loads or so.
Finally, some homeowners wary of the chemicals that may or may not be lurking in commercial rinse aid have successfully solved their hard water spotting problems with regular old white vinegar.
While this might work in a pinch, its an especially bad long-term solution, according to David Ellerby, our chief scientist.
I think vinegar is a bad idea overall. It’s not replacing rinse aid, because chemically it does something completely different. It doesn’t help to rinse or dry, it just acts as a band-aid for hard water problems.
There are also some downsides to vinegar: The acidity would react with alkaline chemicals in your dishwasher detergent that break down grease, so that it could reduce cleaning performance. It’s also likely to be hard on rubber seals and gaskets.
Why Your Dishwasher Detergent Is Not Dispensing
Dishwashers are an interesting combination of forces. Water sprays through spinning arms and soap is dispensed into the chamber at just the right moment to suds an entire load of dishes. In an hour or less, the moving water pressure, detergent, and heat have rendered your dishes clean enough to eat from again and left no mess behind. Unless, of course, your dishwasher is not functioning the way its supposed to.
One of the most common dishwasher problems is when the soap dispenser does not open and the detergent does not dispense. This is often evidenced by the dispenser still being closed when the dishwasher cycle is done and sometimes reveals a crunchy soap-colored drip down the inside of the dishwasher door from the detergent compartment.
The problem is so common because there are many possible causes for a non-dispensing detergent compartment in your dishwasher. Lets take a look at the potential reasons why your dishwasher soap compartment is not opening when its supposed to.
