How To Replace The Heating Element

GE Dishwasher Heating Element Replacement #WD05X21294

The heating element is used to heat the water and/or to dry the dishes. If it does not function properly it can result in unsatisfactory cleansing of the dishes or the failure of a cycle to complete properly.

Caution: Please read our safety information before attempting any testing or repairs.

Before replacing the heating element, unplug the dishwasher or shut off the power at the fuse box or breaker panel to avoid an electrical shock hazard.

First, open the door and look into the tub and locate the heating element . The heating element has two terminals which extend through the bottom of the tub, note the general location where they go through.

To access the heating elements wiring, remove the front panel located beneath the door. The panel is usually held in place with two screws either above or below the panel. It may be necessary to first open the door to the dishwasher to reach the screws over the panel, then close the door to remove the panel.

Look into the lower access area and locate where the terminals come through the tub. Each terminal has a wire connected to it. Label the wires and the terminals so that they can be properly reconnected. Pull the wire off of each terminal they are connected with a slip on connector. Firmly pull the connector, do not pull on the wire. You may need to use a pair of needle-nose pliers. Inspect the connector and terminal for corrosion. If either is corroded they should be cleaned or replaced.

How To Replace The Heating Element In The Dishwasher

First things first turn off the electricity that goes to the dishwasher. You want to do this by going to the circuit breaker or fuse box within your home. Test the machine to ensure it is off before you proceed any further.

The only supplies you will need for this job is a wrench to remove the nuts, a screwdriver to unscrew the element, an ohmmeter to test the actual part, and the replacement part if it is truly burnt out. You will also need to replace the thick washer that goes with the part, if upon inspection, yours is not in pristine working order .

Carefully remove the access panel from the bottom of your machine.

Disconnect the heating element wires from their terminals, writing down in which space they will reconnect, or somehow marking them so you remember. You can find them by following the two wires down from the element itself which you will see coming through the bottom of the tub on the underside of the dishwasher.

Use an ohmmeter to determine if the heating element has truly blown out. If you get a reading of infinity or a reading above 30 ohms, then yes, it is time to replace the part.

Remove the screws or nuts holding the heating element into the washer and lift it out from the inside of the machine.

Check the washer to see if it is in good working order and if it is, you can simply put a new heating element in place, tightening the nuts to hold it firmly in place. If it is not, purchase a replacement washer and put it into place.

How To Replace Heating Element In Dishwasher

First, turn off the power to your dishwasher and unplug it from its electrical outlet. Next, remove all of the dishes and soak them in soapy water for a few minutes or until they are fully clean before drying them completely with a towel.

Wipe out the inside of your dishwasher, then wrap up any cords and remove the mats from both lower areas.

To access the heating element in a dishwasher, you will need to open either lid or door so that there is room for you to slide your hand at least halfway under it on one side.

Once you have located the heating element, you will need to detach it from the other components. You do this by unscrewing the screws that are holding it in place with a screwdriver or wrench before removing and replacing it with another one.

Once you have removed and replaced your dishwashers heating element assembly, be sure to turn on power to your dishwasher before proceeding to replace it.

If the heating element is still working properly, you will need to wait for your dishwasher to heat up before running a cycle on it.

It takes about 45 minutes from when you start a load until it reaches its full temperature and should be safe to use again.

If your replacement of the heating element does not solve your problem, you will need to further investigate the issue.

How Do I Know If My Dishwasher Heating Element Is Bad

Dishwashers are supposed to clean your dishes in a hot cycle and dry them, if this isnt happening and theres no overloading or any other mistake you made, the element is bad.

Apart from the physical evidence of wear, blisters, and a cut, a red glow, your dishwasher heating element could be bad without your knowledge.

To confirm your suspicions, you should check for continuity and resistance. You can do this with a multimeter.

When you check for continuity and theres none, it means the electrical path is broken and the heating element is bad. You should change it immediately.

To check for continuity, rotate the range selection of your multimeter to the lowest ohms.

Put the mouths/leads of the two probes of the multimeter together and adjust the needle on the multimeter to read 0.

The next thing to do is, test the heating element for continuity. Disconnect the heating element from the dishwasher after turning the power off.

If you can access the terminals of the heating element without pulling your dishwasher apart, then theres no need. Just ensure the dishwasher is disconnected from the power source.

Put one probe of the multimeter on one end of the heating element , and the other probe on the other end of the heating element.

You should get a reading between 0 and 50 ohms. If the needle doesnt move or theres no significant change in the number displayed on the multimeter, then the heating element has no continuity. It is bad.

Testing A Dishwasher Heating Element

If your dishwasher uses a heating element and youve noticed the dishware is not drying properly, you should first inspect the element for any corrosion, blistering, or cracks. Any visible damage is a strong indicator that the element has burned out and will need to be replaced. If there is no apparent damage, you can use a multi-meter to test the heating element for continuity a continuous electrical path present in the part:

  • Yourfirst step is to remove the heating element, or isolate it, from the base ofthe dishwasher tub.
  • Setthe multi-meter to the lowest setting for Ohms of resistance.
  • Touchthe red multi-meter lead to one heating element terminal and the black lead tothe other terminal.
  • Ifthe meter displays a reading between 10 and 50 Ohms of resistance, the heatingelement has continuity and should be working properly.
  • Ifthe meter display does not change when the leads touch the terminals, orchanges insignificantly, then the heating element has no continuity and can beconsidered defective.

Check Out These Best Drying Dishwashers

When shopping for a dishwasher, you will want to make sure that it is going to dry your dishes. Not all dishwashers are going to completely dry the plastics, but all other dishes should be dried. Bosch, KitchenAid, Thermador, and Maytag are known for how well their dishwashers operate. Here are a few options of the best drying dishwashers.

Dishwasher Does Not Heat The Water Or Dry The Dishes

Hi Everyone, I am trying to get some help with a KitchenAid Dishwasher, Model KUDE60FVSS2, that is having problems with heating the water and drying the dishes.

I read other posts and already have done the following:

1) Replaced Heating Element

2) Replaced High Limit Thermostat

3) Rebooted the Control Board

3) Visually Inspected Control Board

What continues to happen is:

1) During Normal Wash cycle/Hi-Temp Scrub/Sani-Rinse: The water stays cool

2) Heat Dry: The heating element does heat up some but it does not get hot like it used to.

So, any idea why the water not heat up during any of the cycles? My initial thought was the Hi Limit Thermostat, but I checked it with a Multi-Meter and it has continuity . And then I replaced it just to be sure.

Is there an actual thermostat on the dishwasher?

Is there anything else to try before looking at the Control Board?

How Long Do Dishwasher Heating Elements Last

Well, that depends on several factors, like how often you use your dishwasher, the manufacturer, and how well you treat your dishwasher.

A dishwasher from a reliable manufacturer that you use often, can last for about 10 years with no breakdown whatsoever.

The heating element wont develop a fault or fail at all in those years. Unless theres an external cause like high voltage, which clearly isnt the fault of the heating element.

So I would say you should get at least 5 years from your dishwasher heating element before having to repair or replace it.

Is It Worth Replacing The Heating Element In A Dishwasher

KitchenAid Dishwasher Heating Element Replacement W10703867

Yes, it is. Depending on the brand and where you buy the heating element, you may not spend more than 50 dollars especially if you plan to replace it yourself.

Later in the article, we will walk you through simple steps of doing this without stress, even if you havent done it before. This cost compared to the cost of getting a new dishwasher makes it worth it.

Plus even though you can use your dishwasher without it, its benefits are numerous and critical to the effectiveness of the dishwasher, so replacing it is worth your time and money.

Replacing your dishwasher heating element can also give you an extended life of about 5 years minimum on your dishwasher. Its more than worth it in my opinion.

Diy Vs Hire A Professional

Since dishwashers require plumbing and electricity to work, it’s best to hire a professional for repairs. Appliance repair technicians can properly assess and diagnose the problem and get your dishwasher up and running once again. They can also tell you if replacing or repairing your unit is better.

While repairing a dishwasher averages between $160 and $300, replacing a dishwasher costs $670 to $1,270. For more minor repairs on a dishwasher that’s only a few years old, repairing probably makes more sense than replacing. Find an appliance repair technician near you for a professional opinion.

Dishwasher Seal Repair Cost

KitchenAid KDTE334GPS0 Dishwasher Heating Element W10703867

Dishwasher door seal repairs range from $50 to $125. This is one of the easiest and cheapest repair jobs for dishwashers, and it usually needs to be done if you notice water leaking out. The seal usually makes the door watertight, but a broken or cracked seal can allow little streams of water to pass through. Cracked or worn seals occur for many reasons, from build up of debris to simply the age of the machine.
