Check The Sink’s Air Gap Cylinder
An air gap cylinder keeps water flowing in the right direction during the dishwashers cycles. It also prevents wastewater from backing up into the dishwasher. It should be located behind the sink and near the dishwasher outlet hose.
Check the air gap cylinder to make the inside is clear. If you notice any buildup, clean it out and make sure its tightly secured.
Clean Out The Dishwasher Filter
There is a filter at the bottom of your dishwasher. If food particles buildup in the filter basket, it could prevent the washer from draining.

The Air Gap Is Clogged
Solution: Some dishwashers use air gaps to prevent dirty water from backing up and contaminating your dishes. If one gets clogged, it can impact the appliances ability to drain. To tell if your dishwasher has an air gap, look for a small silver cylinder sitting by your faucet. If you have one, check to see if its clogged by removing the top cover and pulling straight up. Then, depending on the design, unscrew or release the tabs on the inner cap. Remove any debris or food buildup that may have accumulated and then reassemble the air gap.

Turn on the cold water on the kitchen faucet and start the garbage disposal. Let it run for like a minute.
Meanwhile, check if water is backing up through the garbage disposal itself or through the dishwasher. If there is water backing up through the garbage disposal or dishwasher turn off the faucet immediately and stop the disposal.
If you do not have a garbage disposal, turn on water on your kitchen sink faucet and again let it run for like a minute. Check if water will start to back up through the sink drain or dishwasher.
When you run a garbage disposal or try to drain a sink and the water backs up through the sink drain or dishwasher, you are dealing with a clogged kitchen sink drain line or garbage disposal. Unclogging any of the 2 will most likely fix the problem.
On the other hand, if both the garbage disposal and kitchen sink drain line are draining normally and you have standing water at the base of your dishwasher, you are dealing with a clogged filter, jammed drain pump impellers or a clogged/kinked drain hose.

How To Prevent Dishwasher Clogs
- Remove crumbs and other leftover food from your plates, bowls and other dishes before loading the dishwasher.

To prevent your drain hose from getting clogged in the future use the high-loop method. Make sure you create a high loop by fastening the drain hose to the bottom of the countertop or to the top of the cabinet.
The highest part of the loop should be 32 inches above the floor. Gravity helps water flow down the drain hose. Water and debris do not normally settle in the hose because of gravity.

What If My New Dishwasher Isnt Draining

The dishwasher could be backing up for several reasons. You will need to do a little bit of troubleshooting, to find out just what the problem is. You can start with the easiest fix first, this way, you may be able to avoid replacing parts or calling in a repairman.

Why Is There Standing Water In The Bottom Of My Dishwasher
Your dishwasher drains through a drain hose which is connected to the garbage disposal or directly to the kitchen sink drain line. The sink, garbage disposal and dishwasher therefore share the same drain line.
If you notice water at the bottom of your dishwasher, the problem could be within the dishwasher or caused by a clogged garbage disposal or sink drain line.
Standing water at the bottom of the dishwasher is a sign that it is not draining. This is often caused by a clogged filter or drain hose, or jammed drain pump impellers. It could also be caused by a kinked or poorly installed drain hose or a clogged garbage disposal/sink drain line.
If you have a new dishwasher that is not draining, it is very possible that the garbage disposal knockout plug was not removed during installation of the dishwasher. Disconnect the drain hose from the garbage disposal and knock out the plug with a hammer and punch/screwdriver.
To fix a dishwasher that is not draining, start by soaking up the standing water using a sponge. Check if the filter is clogged or the drain pump impellers are jammed. Disconnect the drain hose and blow air or snake it. If the problems persists remove and clean the P-trap then flush the drain line using baking soda and vinegar solution.
Remember that if your garbage disposal or sink drain line is clogged, draining the sink will have water backing up into your dishwasher unless you have an air gap.
