Dishwasher Has Power But Wont Start

Check The Dishwasher Power Cord

GE Dishwasher Won’t Start Fix

Some dishwashers have a power cord that plugs into an electrical outlet under the sink, while other dishwasher power cords are wired directly from the wall to the wires in the dishwashers junction box. If your dishwasher power cord plugs into an electrical outlet, make sure the power cord is plugged in.

If the power cord is plugged in, its possible the electrical outlet doesnt work. Check the electrical outlet for power by plugging in a small lamp. If it doesnt light up, have an electrician repair the bad outlet.

Heres a helpful troubleshooting video that shows this step and additional troubleshooting steps to take when your dishwasher has now power.

How To Fix A Frigidaire Dishwasher That Wont Turn On

If your Frigidaire dishwasher wont turn on at all, and the display panel is showing no lights, then its properly been caused by one or more faulty components in your dishwasher.

In this article, we will go through each of the possible faulty components and tell you how to check them and, if necessary, how to replace them.

This guide covers most major models of Frigidaire dishwashers, including:

Check The Power Source

Youve probably already done this, but before you start checking any of the more complicated potential causes of your dishwasher not starting, you should start by checking the power source.

Heres how to check the power source:

  • Check that the dishwasher is plugged into the wall socket correctly. If your dishwasher is plugged into a GFI outlet, then make sure it hasnt tripped. If it has, you need to reset it.
  • To make sure the power source is not faulty, you can plug something else into the socket and see if that appliance works or not. If it doesnt work, this means there is a problem with the power supply, and if it does work, then this means the power supply is fine.
  • Check the circuit breaker that powers your dishwasher to ensure it hasnt tripped.

    The Dishwasher Is Locked

Your LG dishwasher is not starting but has power because the child lock function is active.

If the child lock function is active, CL, which stands for Child Lock, will show on the user interface.

The work of this program is to prevent your small boy or girl from changing your wash cycle settings or starting the dishwasher when you are not around.

As useful as it is, the child lock also stops the unit from starting. To resume running a cycle or start a new one, youll need to deactivate the control lock.

    To do this:

    • Press and hold the DUAL ZONE for about 3 seconds.
    • Let the system turn off the child lock function.

Door Is Not Properly Closed Open

GE Dishwasher Wont Start But Has Power! (8 Reasons & Fixes)

Most often, the start light will be blinking on its own when the door is opened halfway through. So make sure to close it and close it right.

When you close the door of the dishwasher depending on the model you can hear the latch mechanism.

So if you hear a snapping sound whenever you open and close the dishwasher, thats the latch mechanism engaging/disengaging the door.

Depending on the model, you might be able to figure out if you closed the door properly by listening to this snapping sound. However, even after listening to the snapping noise, if the start light wont stop blinking, then youve probably got a defective door latch.

When Should I Call A Repair Contractor

For those who do not want to dismantle their dishwashers to examine the aforementioned components manually, you should contact a repair contractor at your earliest convenience.

However, if youre slightly educated on how dishwashers work, and if you can follow the troubleshooting instructions included in the owners manual of your dishwasher, then you might want to at least examine the components before you call a repairman.

That said, you should have all of the proper tools on hand before even thinking about taking the dishwasher apart. Without a multimeter, you wont be able to determine which part or parts are faulty.

    Examine The Control Panel

Again, as time goes on, the control panel might lose functionality due to wear and tear. This is especially common in older models or ones that were purchased second-hand. One clear sign that your control panel is faulty is the backlight LEDs do not turn on when pressing buttons.

In this case, your dishwasher might be completely fine, but the control panel might have lost its lighting function. However, its safer to examine the entire control panel for any faults, especially if you cannot input new wash cycles.

In most cases, it would be better to replace the dishwasher than to repair a broken control panel, especially if youve had the machine for several years now.

Use a multimeter to test internal components. Obtain a wiring diagram for your dishwasher model to ensure that you are testing the correct terminals.

    Should I Reset My Dishwasher

KitchenAid dishwasher has Power but will not start troubleshooting repair

Resetting a dishwasher only works when theres actually power flowing through the machine. However, it wont hurt inputting the reset sequence, just in case the dishwashers LED lights are the only malfunctioning part.

In every other case, since your dishwasher wont turn on, there is no way to reset it without turning it on first. That said, its worth resetting the dishwasher the moment it turns back on, just to clear the cache of memory that might not have been erased automatically.

    Check The Child Safety Lock

Most dishwashers include a child lock feature to prevent kids from opening the appliance or changing the cycle settings. In many cases, the unit will not run while the child lock is engaged. Usually, the lock can be activated and deactivated by pressing and holding a button for three seconds, or something similar. If your dishwasher wont run and the door wont open, check the manufacturers instructions for the child safety lock.

Ge Dishwasher Not Draining All The Way

If your GE dishwasher is not draining all the way, you can check a few things to see if the issue is with the dishwasher itself or the drain system.

First, you can check to see if something obstructs the dishwashers drainage. This could be a clog in the dishwashers drain pipes or a blockage in the dishwashers filter. If there is a blockage, you must remove the obstruction and clean the dishwashers drainage system.

In most cases, the dishwasher will need to be replaced if the problem cannot be resolved. However, if your dishwasher might be defective, please contact GE customer service for more help.

Ge Dishwasher Not Starting Door Sensor

To start any cycle with a GE dishwasher, the door must completely shut and latch before the process begins. When the dishwasher recognizes that the door is closed, this is caused by the door sensor confirming that a successful latch has been made. Some owners have found though that when their dishwasher doesnt start, the problem is suspected to come from the door sensor itself, therefore, how can this be confirmed and resolved.

If your GE dishwasher is not starting and you suspect the door sensor to be the issue, hold down the Cycle Select and Start buttons for 5 seconds. If the lights on the display are solid, the door is latched. If the lights are blinking, the door is not latched, which is causing the sensor to go off.

If you have confirmed that power has been restored, the best way to resolve the issue is by resetting the appliance.

Follow the reset steps stipulated earlier.

When servicing, it is important to check all wiring too .

    Why?

Because loose pins/wiring is often the cause for erratic functioning or complete failure of the unit to turn on.

One final thing: if your unit is still under warranty, it is best to schedule a service appointment with GE here.

    Electronic Timer Is Faulty

If your dishwasher still doesnt start on command, its possible that its electronic timer is faulty. A dishwashers timer governs when power is sent to a particular function of the wash cycle. If you find your dishwasher not draining water properly or not starting as it should, its possible the timer or its connection to the control panel has failed.

A faulty timer should be assessed and replaced by a professional repair service.

    Test The Door Latch Switch

Remove the inner door panel to access the door latch assembly at the top of the door. Make sure the catch engages the door latch switch when it is inserted into the latch assembly. If all appears to work properly, use a multimeter to test the switches for continuity. With the multimeter set on Rx1, touch the probes to the switch terminals. The reading should be at or near zero. If your reading is different, replace the door latch assembly.

Make Sure The Thermal Fuse Is Working

Dishwasher Wonât Start â Dishwasher Troubleshooting

If youve ruled out the door latch and door switch as the cause of your GE dishwasher not starting, the next step is to check the thermal fuse. The point of the thermal fuse is to shut your dishwasher off when it overheats. Sometimes the fuse blows, and this will stop your dishwasher from starting.

Checking the thermal fuse requires doing a multi-meter test to do that:

  • Ensure the power is turned off to your dishwasher.
  • Locate the thermal fuse .
  • Use your multimeter to test the thermal fuse for continuity.
  • If the test shows continuity, move on to step 5, as its working correctly. If it doesnt have continuity, it will need to be replaced with a new fuse.
  • Once the replacement has been carried out, turn the power back on, and attempt to start your dishwasher. If it still doesnt start, move on to step 5.

    Try To Reset The Appliance

The Door Latch Could Be Faulty

Another possible reason why your LG dishwasher wont start is that the door latch or hook might be faulty.

Sometimes the latch might malfunction and make the dishwasher door not close properly. And as you already know, dishwashers cant start running if the main control board thinks that the door is still open.

First, check if there are debris or scum on the door, as these are the likely reason why the dishwasher door may not be closing properly.

Second, inspect the door latch to check if youre dealing with a broken seal.

If during the LG dishwasher troubleshootingyou notice that the door latch is faulty, you should get a new door latch for replacement.

Note that a new LG dishwasher door latch might cost around $30 to $40 depending on the LG dishwasher model.

    To replace the door latch:

    • Turn off your dishwashers power supply.
    • Open the dishwasher door and unthread the screws holding the outer door panel.
    • Pull the outer door panel off, unthread the screws holding the control panel, and pull the old door latch out to release it.
    • Install the new door latch by connecting the wires to the appropriate terminals, align the door latch with the control panel, and snap it into place.
    • Reposition the control panel and secure it with the screws.
    • Re-install the outer door panel and screw it with the screws.

You are now ready to restore power to the dishwasher and confirm the latch is now working properly.

Many modern machines have a specific reset process, unfortunately, this varies across models:

If your Bosch dishwasher won’t start but has power, try pressing the cancel buttons simultaneously and holding them down for 10 seconds.

When you have a Whirlpool dishwasher with lights on but it won’t start, you need to open the door and press the combination ‘heated dry, normal, heated dry, normal. Child locks prevent children from accidentally turning on the dishwasher. So if child locks are activated, this mechanism can prevent your dishwasher from starting.

Check your owners manual for instructions on how to disable child controls. If you do not have a copy, the GE website provides downloadable manuals specific to model numbers.

Usually, for the newer models, you lock and unlock child controls by pressing the Dry Boost pad at the same time as the Steam-Sani, Pre-soak-Sani or Sanitize pads for three seconds.

If your model has a lock control light, it should turn off if the child lock is deactivated. The child lock is activated if the light is on.
