Freshen Up The Filter Naturally

How to Fix a Dishwasher/Sink that ISN’T Draining

Elyse adds that ‘If you haven’t cleaned it in awhile , there could be food particles blocking’ the filter in some cases, it will be so dirty that you will need to run your whole dishwasher on a hot cycle with vinegar and baking soda.

Jake also recommends baking soda and vinegar for dirty dishwashers with grimy filters: ‘Dump 1/2 cup to a cup of each into the drain of the dishwasher. Let it sit for a while and work its magic for 15 minutes to half an hour, then flush it down with some hot water.’

Ways To Unclog Your Dishwasher Drain

Dishwashers handle a lot of food residue. From salad to lasagna and everything in between. The dishwasher deals with sticky sauce, caked on grease, birthday cake crumbs solidly with every load. But when the drain clogs, everything backs up. That luxury of setting and forgetting it turns into a nightmare of murky water and kitchen flooding. Why does this happen? Because your dishwasher drain is clogged. Like most drains, the dishwasher drain can clog in a couple of different places and for different reasons. Today, were here to share eight ways to unclog your drain that run the gamut from a quick cleanse to serious obstruction solutions.

The Waste Pipe Or Garbage Disposal Connection

Before you remove the drain line from the connection at the waste pipe or garbage disposal, have a bucket or bowl handy to collect any water that remains in the drain line. Remove the line by loosening any clamps and let any water drain away.

You should easily see any clog at this point in the drain line. A small piece of plastic tubing or a bottle brush is handy for cleaning debris that clogs the line.

The Drain Snake Method

Depending on where the clog is located, making your dishwasher backing up with dirty water in the drainage line, this procedure can take some effort.

First, a cable auger, or drain snake, is required. Feed the metal cable with a hook-like device into your pipe when doing the snake method. Some simple plumbing tools may also be required.

Here, you feed the snake into the pipe so the hooked end can latch onto the obstruction and tear it apart or remove it when it is retrieved. Since clogs occur anywhere, you may have to remove pipes underneath the sink to access the clog. Make sure you collect any leaking water with a bucket.

The Dishes Are Still Dirty

You might be surprised to know that dirty dishes can often be caused by an overfilled detergent dispenser or the detergent you’re using. If your wash cycle is giving you spotty or residue-covered items when it’s done, try switching out the amount and type of soap you’re using. The spray arms are another part of the machine you should check. If the outlet holes are clogged, your dishwasher can leave food residue on your plates, glasses, bowls, etc. Try clearing the clogged outlet holes and run your dishwasher again. If your dishes still have food residue on them, it may be time to call in a professional.

Water Water Everywhere Down The Sink And Into The Dishwasher

When your kitchen sink drains into your dishwasher, youve got a problem, not the least of which is an overflow leak from the dishwasher and/or water backing up onto the sink, which can also overflow. Besides having to mop out, the bigger issue is youve got a potential health hazard. Dirty sudsy water filled with bacteria is nothing you want to leave standing in your sink or dishwasher. Sink water flowing into a dishwasher cannot only cause bad smells in your kitchen, more seriously it is a health hazard, so this needs to be addressed as soon as it becomes apparent.

The reason this can happen is because the water source for the sink and the dishwasher are the sameany issue with that main line can cause a backup. Sometimes a little cleaning and preventative maintenance can go a long way to avoiding this. Sometimes youll need to call a plumber.

Lets look at what is causing these issues and what you can do to correct them. There are several areas to check to figure out why sink water is draining into the dishwasher. Basically, there are four potential sources of clogs that cause the problem of sink water draining into your dishwasher:

  • Dishwasher drain hose loop or air gap
  • Kitchen sink drain
  • Garbage Disposal

Insert The Drain Snake

  • Loosen the setscrew at the tip of the snake and pulling out 6 to 10 in. of cable.
  • Then tighten the setscrew and spin the drain snake down into the drain line.

  • Thread the tip of the drain snake into the drain stub-out. Tighten the setscrew and turn the crank clockwise to feed it into the drainpipe.

The Reasons Why Your Dishwasher Wont Drain Water

A dishwasher that wont drain water might get your dishes clean. However, the dirty water from the cycle is left to rot in your kitchen. This not only is a hassle because you cant run another load of dishes, but it also is unsanitary.

Below are some of the main reasons why your dishwasher does not drain. Check the details of each as the first step in troubleshooting your problem.

    • There is Food in the Drain

Occasionally people might leave large particles of food on the dishes and bowls they place in the dishwasher. This is a big mistake that can result in the drain of your dishwasher getting clogged.

To identify if this is a problem, open the dishwasher and pull out the bottom tray. If you see food particles caught around the sides of the drain, this may be the problem. You might also want to run your finger along the edge of the drain to see if the drain is clogged and you cant see it.

    • Your Sink Drain is Clogged

Incredibly, the problem with a dishwasher that wont drain might have nothing to do with the actual dishwasher appliance. Instead, your sink might be to blame.

The dishwasher in your kitchen has a water release pipe that leads the drained water away towards the sink. This pipe is connected to the same pipe that drains the basin of the sink. If your sink is clogged in the pipe below the basin, the dishwasher will also be clogged and may not be draining all the way.

    • The Air Gap is Clogged

How Can I Fix A Clogged Dishwasher

Dishwasher not draining Water – Dishwasher full of Water Fixed

The easy way to fix a clogged dishwasher is to reach out to professionals and ask them for help. If your machine is under warranty, this might cost you nothing at all. If youd rather DIY the situation, there are a few things you can try before calling in a professional. The first thing you want to do is to ensure the drain-hose connection, power supply, solenoid, and drain-hose clamp are properly connected and have no clogs in them.

If the above doesnt reveal any issues, its a good idea to check your dishwashers filter, especially if you have an older machine. The filter is likely at the bottom of the tub. Check the filter and its cage, remove any debris you might see, and see if the problem is resolved. If that doesnt work, the time to call in the professionals has likely arrived.

    Check The Dishwasher Drain Hose

This is usually a corrugated plastic tube that runs from the bottom of the dishwasher to the air gap, garbage disposal, or sink drain, depending on the setup.

Turn off the power to the dishwasherby pulling out its plug or switching off the breaker to the dishwasher circuit. Remove the toe-kick panel, then loosen the hose clamp securing the drain hose to the dishwasher pump .

Clean the end of the hose, then blow into it. If the hose is plugged and you can’t blow through it, remove the clamp on the other end of the hose, then clean the hose out in a sink. If you can’t unclog the hose, or if it is old and cracked, replace it.

How Does Garbage Disposal Prevent Draining

Garbage disposal clogs the drain tube and blocks the pathway of water. If damaged trash disposal prevents the dishwasher from emptying correctly, it impacts the dishwashers operation. Because the trash disposal is linked to the dishwashers outlet, any obstructions in the disposal will cause water to back up into the dishwasher and sink.

Locate And Remove The Filter To Unclog Dishwasher Drain

The first step in unclogging the dishwasher drain is to locate and remove the filter. The dishwasher filter is located in the bottom pan, either in the back of the dishwasher or near the spray arm. Remove the filter from the pan by unscrewing the casing. Once you have removed this filter from the dishwasher pan, you may scrub the debris and other particles off of the filter screening. If you ever need to replace the filter, you will look in the handbook for the make and model of the dishwasher to make sure you purchase the right replacement.

Clean The Dishwasher Sinks Air Gap:

Water Coming Into Dishwasher When Off

Having problems with your dishwasher not draining? It could be a clogged air gap. An air gap is an important component of any dishwasher setup which prevents wastewater from backing up into the dishwasher and contaminating it. Cleaning out the air gap can help to alleviate this issue, as it removes any blockages from the vents in the pipe.

An air gap works by utilizing two small pipes connected to each other, one inside the sink and one outside of it. As water flows through the inner pipe, a vacuum is created that sucks away dirty water and food particles from within the sink. If these materials become stuck in either pipe, or if there is an obstruction blocking airflow, then this can cause your dishwasher not to drain properly. Luckily, cleaning out your air gap isnt too difficult!

Check And Clean Your Sinks Air Gap

Dont have a garbage disposal? Check your sinks air gap, which prevents drain water from the sink from backing up into the dishwasher. The air gap is a small, slotted cylinder that typically juts up near the faucet, though some may be below the sink near the dishwasher outlet hose. Take the following steps:

    • Remove the sink gap by turning it counterclockwise.
    • Clean out any debris with a stiff brush.
    • Replace the cleaned-out sink gap and try running the dishwasher again.

Check Valve & Run Water In The Sink That The Dishwasher Is Connected To

    • When the dishwasher throws up water, then the check valve prevents water from returning to the dishwasher. If the check valve is stuck in turn off position or damaged, it will not drain properly.
    • Run the water for 30 seconds and verify the sink drain. If there is no issue with it, Then there is the problem of plumbing in your home, not your dishwasher.
    • Contact your plumber to resolve this issue.

  • Pro tip: Clean the cable as you pull itll probably be covered with incredibly dirty gunk. You may get a large plug of material at the end of the snake, so keep that bucket handy.
  • Repeat the process until you no longer feel a blockage, then reassemble the trap and run plenty of warm water to flush the line.

    Benefits Of Regular Maintenance:

Regular maintenance of your dishwasher can help keep it running optimally for a longer period of time. Regularly cleaning and inspecting your dishwasher can help you prevent problems such as dishes not coming out clean or the dishwasher not draining properly. If youre wondering why is my dishwasher not draining?, one of the first steps should be to check that it has been regularly maintained.

A few benefits of regular maintenance on your dishwasher include: extending its life, improving its performance and efficiency, reducing repair costs, and increasing its energy efficiency. A well-maintained dishwasher helps ensure that all components are working properly so water will drain correctly after each cycle. Additionally, when parts are inspected regularly they can often be replaced before any major damage is done which saves both money and time spent on repairs later down the line.

    Dishwasher Drain Line Clog

It could be that sink water backflow into the dishwasher is not from the kitchen sink, but actually originated in the dishwasher line. This should be suspected if no other clogs seem to exist.

Food debris and grease from dishes can pass through the strainer at the bottom of the dishwasher and form sticky clumps that jam the drain line. Waste water pumped out from the dishwasher ihits the clog and then flows back into the dishwasher.

To handle this, you have to loosen the drain hose clamps to remove the hose and run a strong stream of water through it until it is clear.

Also check the dishwasher strainer. The strainer is in the floor of the dishwasher and is easily removable for periodic cleaning. Lift out the strainer and check beneath where it sits for any gunk that got through. You should be able to pull the gunk out with your fingers.

This of course raises the question debated in many households as to whether or not it is better to rinse dishes before they go into the dishwasher. If youve experienced a clog like this one, you may think the answer is to rinse. However, this could just as easily lead to a sink drain clog from accumulated food and grease. The argument for no rinsing is that pre-rinsing is a waste of water because most modern dishwashers are well equipped to handle the dirtiest dishes.

So which is correct/ The answer is simple and obvious. Whichever one your spouse thinks is right.

    • Pour the solution into the basket at the bottom. Let it sit for 15 minutes.
    • Finish by pouring hot water down the basket and running the rinse cycle.

    Check The Dishwasher Filter

Dishwasher Not Draining? 3 Reasons Why
    • After youve checked the plumbing, check inside the dishwasher along the bottom of the tub for food and waste buildup. Clean the area with a rag or abrasive sponge.
    • Check the filter. It will be located at the back or along the bottom of the tub near the spray arm. New units have smaller grids that are built into the base. These are designed to protect the filter from buildup, but sometimes debris can still accumulate.
    • Use a screwdriver to unscrew the casing. Remove the filter and clean it as needed.

    The Question Of Rinsing

One of the main culprits for clogs, either in the spray arms of a dishwasher or in the filter, is food debris that is allowed to build up over time. As such, check your dishwasher’s filter which can be found at the bottom of the appliance, near where the water drains after each load to make sure that it’s functioning properly. How often you actually need to clean the filter may vary between models, so it’s always a good idea to refer to your appliance guide just to be sure.

An issue of contention regarding food-related clogs in your dishwasher is whether or not you should rinse dishes before loading them up. Leftovers should be scraped into a garbage disposal or trash bin, but that’s all. Also, some detergents clean by affixing themselves to food particles, and then breaking them down. Without any “gunk,” the detergent would run right over the dish without thoroughly cleaning them.

The other side of the argument is that most experts would recommend the opposite, claiming that the combination of soap, minerals and food gunk will eventually cause sludge that could lead to poor drainage, and possible even cause backups that will leave you washing your dishes with dirty water.

As a middle ground to the argument, always refer to your handbook for best practices that will prolong the life of your appliance without sacrificing the quality of each load.
