If Your Dishwasher Still Sucks Try A Better Detergent
When it comes to cleaning, good detergent is more important than a good dishwasher. Every dishwasher basically works the same way, but detergents can behave very differently. A cheap gel like Palmolive Eco Lemon Splash has far fewer ingredients than a top-of-the-line detergent tab like Finish Quantum.
If leftover food is your main problem, make sure youre using a detergent with enzymes. Most gels do not contain any enzymes , whereas nearly all powders, tabs, and packs do.
The enzymes in dish detergent are typically produced from bacteria . Enzymes are also environmentally friendly because they biodegrade quickly in water. The most common kinds of enzyme used in dishwasher detergents are amylases, which break down starch, and proteases, which work on proteins. Its very similar to what happens in your stomach, said Jill Franke, an engineer and product research group leader at Procter & Gamble, the maker of Cascade. A few of our sources also said that enzymes might actually work better if you skip the pre-rinse, because you leave extra gunk for the enzymes to cling tothey might do a better job dissolving thin, filmy residue this way.
A couple of other possibilities to consider, if better cleaning products dont do the job on their own:

Make Sure The Thermostat Works Properly
The thermostat is a device that regulates the temperature of water and air inside the dishwasher. If it does not work properly, you will notice that the interior of the dishwasher is still cool after a washing cycle. This malfunction also impacts the drying function of the machine. If this is the case, call a technician to fix your dishwasher.

The Model Number Tells All
If you get confused, the best way to learn more about the dishwasher youre buying is by taking a look at the model number.
500 and 300 Series dishwashers feature pushbutton controls, while the 800 Series has touch controls.
Though model numbers may look randomly generated, every SKU tells a story. For example, lets examine the SHE33T55UC. Just from looking at this number, you can tell its a 24-inch model with external controls in the 300 Series, with a stainless finish. How?
- The initial S tells us that the product is a dishwasher.
- If the second letter is an H, its a standard 24-inch model. If its a G, its a 24-inch ADA compliant model. If its a P, the dishwasher is a compact, ADA-compliant 18-inch model.
- The third letter tells us what the handle and display combination is. An E, for instance, means external controls. X means the dishwasher has a bar handle, while a P means the dishwasher has a pocket handle. A V means the dishwasher is panel ready.
- The fourth digit tells us what series the dishwasher is in. 3 = 300 Series. A = Ascenta, 5 = 500 Series, 8 = 800 Series, and P = Benchmark.
- The eighth digit tells what color the machine is. 5 = Stainless, 6 = Black, 2 = White, and 3 = Panel Ready.
Simple enough, right? Armed with this information, you can find the right dishwasher for your needs.
How Do You Reset A Bosch Dishwasher
A common issue with Bosch dishwashers is that it can get stuck in a mode where the power button turns red and the dishwasher doesnt react to basically any command. This primarily happens when a cycle has been interrupted, but can also occur when theres an actual issue.
If youre flummoxed by why your Bosch dishwasher isnt responding, the first step is to firmly press the Start button, release it after a second or so, and then wait a few seconds to see if the cycle resumes. If it doesnt, you may need to actually reset the device. Most modern Bosch dishwashers can be reset by holding the Start button for three to five seconds. Older models will require a combination of buttons that is specific to the model, but should be indicated on the machine and spelled out clearly in the instruction manual.

Can Any Dishwasher Dry Plastic
When we mention good or bad drying performance, were talking about how well a dishwasher can dry plastic. Metal, glass, and ceramic almost always come out perfectly dry .
Getting plastic dry is a tougher task, especially in dishwashers that have a passive, no-added-heat drying system . One article from The New York Timess science section explains the struggle to dry plastic in detail. But the gist of it is that plastic is a poor conductor of heat, and water tends to form droplets on plastic, both of which make it harder for water to evaporate.
Your results will depend on the type of plastic , whether you use a rinse aid , and your dishwashers drying system.
Lets dig into those drying systems. The most straightforward, classic type, used by something like half of all current dishwashers, simply bakes the dishes dry after it finishes the washing. These models simply heat up the tub with a ceramic heating element, like a weak oven. This function is commonly called heated dry.
Heated dry isnt quite a foolproof way to ensure bone-dry dishes. In our tests, we always found residual moisture unless we used a rinse aid. Even then, the thinnest plastic cups and containers still had a little dribble left over.
The other heated-dry downside: If a piece of plastic slips through the racks and onto the heating element, youre stuck with a hard-to-clean, acrid-smelling mess.

Crystaldry Feature Removes The Need For Towel
Bosch is currently the only company making dishwashers with zeolite, the mineral that powers its CrystalDry feature. Hidden in a small compartment in the back of the interior, this unassuming mineral naturally heats up when it comes in contact with water, producing enough heat to dry even stubborn plastics.
A plastic container that underwent CrystalDry, left, is noticeably more dry than the one on the right that went through a normal dishwasher cycle.
When we engaged the feature on the Auto cycle, 100% of dishes and plates came out dry, and it even extracted all the moisture out of the interior of Tupperware containers. Because of all the nooks and crannies, water still pooled on lids and the undersides of containers. However, when we angled our plastic containers the right way, the water slid right off, leaving us with cabinet-ready items.

Empty The Dishwasher From Bottom To Top
A simple tip for getting really dry dishes: empty the dishwasher in the right order. Start with the bottom rack. The reason for this is simple. Water tends to pool in concave surfaces, like the bottom of wine glasses and coffee mugs, which are placed on the top rack, upside down. If you remove these first, the pooling water will spill over the rest of the dishes underneath them.
Extra tip: when the washing cycle is complete, open the door of the dishwasher slightly, and leave it like that for about one minute. This will allow moisture and steam to get out of the machine, instead of condensing on the dishes.

The Sanitize Option Helps In Ultra
A Sanitize cycle and sippy cups go together like peanut butter and jelly.
Hey parents, did you know you can clean many high chair trays, teething rings, and plastic toys in the dishwasher? The SHPM88Z75N has a Sanitize option that our sensors showed reach temperatures north of 160°F. This Sanitize option uses a lot of power and adds a lot of time to a cycle, but its great for peace of mind when you want to get something as germ-free as you can get without resorting to bleach. Consider using it on one of the items in our list of things you didnt know you can clean in the dishwasher.
Ge: Our Second Runner
We nearly recommended GE dishwashers as our runner-up instead of the Maytag 7959. Machines from the two brands are similar in a lot of ways, with heated drying, a food grinder, great cleaning performance , decent racks, and quiet-enough performance. We tested a couple of GE models, and the GE GDP665SYNFS was our favorite. It has a third rack, plus bottle-washing nozzles built into the tines on the middle rack, a feature that we think is pretty cool even as we recognize how gimmicky it is.
In making our picks, we ended up passing over GE because its aggregate reliability data is less favorable, and its prices tend to be higher than Whirlpool and Maytags on a per-feature basis. But if theres something you like about a GE or GE Profile dishwashermaybe youre getting a great GE stove in one of the finishes that only GE sells, and you want your dishwasher to matchit can be a fine choice.
Wed steer clear of the really low-end GE models because they have lousy owner ratings.

Blomberg And Beko: Next Time
Beko, a mainstream European appliance brand, has been a fringe brand in the US under the Blomberg banner for about a decade. As weve understood the situation, the dishwashers work well, but theyve been easy to buy only in certain regions of the US, so weve never recommended them. But the company looks to be expanding its presence, and well try to get one of its machines the next time we test dishwashers.
