Should I Get A Dishwasher Warranty And How Important Is It

Your dishwasher should last you about 10 years without requiring any major repairs but, of course, a warranty is a good thing to have if something goes wrong soon after you take it home. Most warranties from the major brands outlined here cover replacement parts and labor for one year from the date you purchased it and are designed to protect you should there be a major manufacturer flaw in your model.

It is worth noting that Maytag appliances include a generous, limited 10-year warranty that covers certain replacement parts after the first year warranty expires. Meanwhile, you can potentially extend the efficacy and lifespan of your dishwasher by taking care of it, with CNET’s guide to how to clean your dishwasher.

Various Dishwasher Cycles And Features: Do They Matter

There are dishwasher cycles that come standard on nearly every model — normal, quick wash, heavy-duty, delicate — but fancier units will have even more specific cycles such as mineral-assisted wash and presoak cycle. These extra cycles can be nice to have but I wouldn’t weigh them too heavily when making a purchase decision. Ultimately, you’ll be using the standard cycles far more than the niche ones.

Don’t become consumed with the various cycles. You’ll likely only ever use two or three.

What Is A Dishwasher

Bosch 300 Series 24" Recessed Handle Dishwasher with Stainless Steel ...

A dishwasher is a device that cleans and dries dishes using a water jet. The water jet is filled with dry ingredients such as sodium bicarbonate, baking soda, propane gas, etc. The dry ingredients are then carried out at high pressure which is then panned into the water to wash the dishes. The water jet is not only filled with dry items but also contains chemicals from baked items such as sodium bicarbonate, sodium acid, acid, etc.

Bosch 100 Series: Small Upgrades

We mentioned above that Boschs tiers are mostly well-organized. The 100 Series is the exception.

A couple of the 100 Series models are barely different from the Ascenta series. These dishwashers have a 3 in their model name, and the minor upgrades over the Ascenta include:

  • Racks: Two racks, fold-down tray on top for small items
  • Fast Cycle: 1-hour wash and dry

But other 100 Series models include some substantial upgrades. These dishwashers have a 4 in their model numbers, and add the following features:

  • Racks: A third rack, for utensils and other relatively flat items quick height-switching system on middle shelf
  • Noise: Quieter performance, rated at 48 decibels
  • Fast Cycle: 1-hour wash and dry on the bar-handle model
  • Controls: Hidden
  • Finishes: Stainless steel or a panel-ready front to match cabinetry

Bosch 800 Series: Refinements And Clever Tech

The 800 Series has more handle styles and finishes available than the 500 Series, and a few other upgraded features. They include:

  • Noise: Very quiet performance, rated at 42 decibels
  • Drying: Heat-releasing mineral tech gets plastic bone-dry
  • Controls: Hidden touch-sensitive panel
  • Handles: Pocket or bar handle
  • Finishes: Stainless steel, black stainless, or panel-ready front to match cabinetry
  • WiFi: One model can connect to a companion app for easier troubleshooting

Theres also the 800 Series Premium, with a few extra noteworthy upgrades, including:

  • Racks: An extra-deep third rack, large enough for certain cereal bowls
  • Style: Metallic-finish handles on the racks
  • Noise: Even quieter at 40 decibels, though the improvement may be hard to hear

800 Series models are also available in a compact 18-inch width. Several ADA-compliant models are available as well, including one 24-inch-width option. Each of these specialty models includes a tray for water-softening salts.

What Does Dba Mean

When you see the dBA abbreviation, that is referring to “A-weighted decibels”, which is the unit that dishwasher manufacturers use to measure how loud a dishwasher is during its operation. You’ve probably heard of decibels as a measure of loudness before, but the “A-weighting” basically refers to the fact that certain frequencies are more easily perceived by the human ear than others for instance, a flute solo sounds louder than a bass solo played at the same volume because the human ear is naturally more attuned to mid- and high-range frequencies than it is to bass-range frequencies. As a result, when manufacturers report how loud a dishwasher actually sounds to someone in the same room as the dishwasher while it’s turned on, they report that number in terms of A-weighted decibels , rather than just decibels .

Bosch dishwashers are often amongst the lowest dBA dishwashers on the market.

Dishwasher Racks And Rack Placement

This is an easily overlooked feature but it has a significant impact on your day-to-day dishwashing. A new trend is the small third flat rack at the top that can accommodate extra silverware, kitchen utensils and other smaller items. They are typically in addition to an upright silverware holder housed in the bottom rack. If you find yourself filling or overfilling a standard silverware holder on a regular basis, this feature will allow you to wash everything and keep things neat and tidy.

The trendy third rack provides another place to load silverware, kitchen utensils and other small items.

Many dishwashers also now have adjustable racks to accommodate dishes and pans of odd or abnormally large sizes. If you’ve ever struggled with fitting large items into your dishwasher, you should consider a model with adjustable racks.

Best Dishwasher Of 2022

We zeroed in on top home appliance brands, including Samsung, Whirlpool, LG, KitchenAid and Bosch, to find the best option for your needs and budget.

Sure, a dishwasher’s primary function is helping clean up after a meal, but it’s also so much more than that. A dishwasher is also a live-in housekeeper, a device to help children learn about chores and a radical act of self-care or couples’ therapy.

Finding the best dishwasher in 2022 isn’t as simple as it sounds. Dishwashers are relatively standard in size — typically 24 inches wide and about 35 inches high — so choosing the perfect model one for you is more a matter of your available budget and what kind of options or features you want. In terms of dishwasher functionality, many rating sites, including CNET, have previously concluded that the dish detergent you use and properly loading the dishwasher are often more important than the dishwasher itself when it comes to getting your dishes sparkling clean. What higher prices typically get you are more racks, hidden controls, smart features, numerous cycle options and peace and quiet, not appreciably cleaner dishes — though some may get you appreciably drier dishes.

I evaluated a number of the most popular models with a range of features and in several price points to bring you the best built-in dishwashers for 2022.

Cheap Whirlpools: Mmmmm Probably Dont Do It

As solid as Whirlpools midrange dishwashers are, its cheaper models cut some corners that we think ought not to be cut. We tested the Whirlpool WDF520PADM, which has been one of the best-selling dishwashers in the country for at least a half decadeand thats too bad, because it sucks. It performed okay in our cleaning tests, but it has by far the highest rate of complaints from real-life owners about poor cleaning ability and long cycle times of any dishwasher we looked at. It wasnt good at drying, either. Its racks felt especially wobbly, and theyre even coated in cheap vinyl, rather than sturdier nylon.

We cant help but wonder if this one popular yet thoroughly mediocre dishwasher created the backlash that led to the make dishwashers great again movement. This model is one of the oldest appliances that Whirlpool Corporation still sells, and its hard to understand why the company keeps cranking these things out when it has shown that it can make really solid machines that dont cost much more than this one does.

Whirlpool also sells a few lower-end models, also with cheap racks and just-okay ratings. We didnt test any of them, but they are built on a newer platform than the old 520PAD, so they may at least clean and dry better.

Cons: Reasons To Avoid A Bosch Dishwasher

Best Buy: Bosch 300 Series 24" Pocket Handle Dishwasher with Stainless ...
  • Availability – Bosch dishwashers are the most sought-after products on the market. Be prepared to wait given the post-pandemic rush on home improvement. If you’re planning a kitchen remodel, get in line now, but if your dishwasher just broke and you need a quick replacement, Bosch may not be the brand for you.
  • Upgrade worthy options get pricey – Bosch’s enhanced drying options are game-changers. And the convenience of a 3rd rack cutlery tray is hard to beat. But these and other worthwhile upgrades will put you over $1,000.
  • No hard food disposer – Bosch utilizes filters to prevent bits of food from clogging your drain and getting into the pump. The system works well, but you’ll need to clean the filter as it collects debris. Hard food disposers are a maintenance-free option found on some other brands, but they’re loud and prone to breaking down.

How Does The Dishwasher Compare To Other Dishwashers

If you own a dishwasher, you probably know how it works. You put the water in the tank and then put the plates on top of it to wash them. After that you put detergent in it and then close the lid and turn on the machine. The machine will start automatically with its special cycle that cleans your dishes without any human intervention. If there is something wrong with your dishwasher, you can call a repairman or take it to a store where they will fix it for free or replace your existing one for free if needed.

How We Evaluate Dishwashers

I researched the dishwashers in this list by analyzing specs and user reviews from major retailer sites such as Home Depot, Lowe’s and Best Buy. I also considered their bestselling and top-rated models and their available features compared to price. I focused on those models that had a rating of at least 4.5 stars with at least 500 ratings, or at least the highest rating among the highest number of ratings for the feature or size I was evaluating.

Only those dishwashers that were Energy Star Certified by the EPA were considered, for peace of mind concerning energy efficiency. I dove deep into user comments and ratings to ensure there were no persisting problems, issues or complaints among a particular brand or model. While we didn’t do extensive hands-on testing for this list of best dishwashers, I was able to get my hands on several models in various appliance showrooms to evaluate the build of the unit and the intuitiveness of the buttons and controls.

Other Bosch Dishwashers We Tested

If youre looking for a model with strong cleaning power, the ability to dry dishes every time, and ADA accessibility features, the Bosch 800 Series SGX78B55UC/13 is one of the best options available. We found it scrubs out stains with the best of them, within relatively short cycle times. It also improves upon Boschs already excellent CrystalDry technology, and in our testing it was able to get every dish perfectly dry on every cycle.

When it comes to features, the SGX78B55UC/13 comes fully loaded, with a third rack, adjustable upper rack, and foldable tines in its lower rack, in addition to Boschs suite of smart features. Whats more is this model is ADA-compliant, which means it has enhanced accessibility featuresits also a bit smaller physically, so keep that in mind if your cabinetry is designed for a standard-sized dishwasher. Overall, this is an excellent dishwasher and were happy to see the SGX78B55UC/13 bring all these Series benefits to the table without sacrificing any performance over the other 800 series models.

Bosch makes more than 30 dishwasher models, and its not always obvious what sets each one apart. Were here to demystify the lineup.

The good news is that every Bosch dishwasher is similarly great at cleaning dishes and should be similarly reliable over timeas weve found in our extensive lab tests and member surveys. The major differences between the dishwashers boil down to aesthetics, as well as nice-to-have features like quieter cleaning, extra rack space, better plastic drying, and a few others.

Boschs flagship model sells for more than $2,000. But depending on what you want and need out of your dishwasher, the right Bosch for your kitchen can cost just a third of that price.

Boschs dishwasher lineup is grouped into six well-organized tiers, and once you understand the structure, its much easier to find the best one for your needs and budget. Heres a super-basic overview:

Below, weve put together a more detailed but still easy-to-scan overview of the important features that youll get as you step upward through each tier.

The Dirty Truth About Filters And Food Grinders

All dishwashers have filters that trap loose food particles inside the tub. Some dishwashers also have a grinder behind the filter that can annihilate any chunks of food large enough to clog the drain in the extremely unlikely case that they slip through the filter. Either system works well, and we recommend both types. But a grinder is kind of a gimmick, and most people will be perfectly happy with a simpler, quieter, filter-only dishwasher.

One common concern weve heard is that filter-only models dont clean as well as dishwashers with grinders and need much more unpleasant hands-on maintenance.

Theres a kernel of truth here: You do need to remove and rinse most filters under running water from time to time to maintain the dishwashers performance . Starchy, greasy gunk builds up and eventually clogs the filter. If you put a lot of starchy soils into your machine and use non-enzymatic detergent and have hard water, you might have to rinse the filter as often as every few weeks.

But realistically, most people should be able to get away with rinsing their filters as little as twice a year, because filters tend to stay clean enough on their own. Enzymatic detergents weaken the structure of the toughest types of soils . All of those pre-softened foods that are caught in the filter eventually get shredded in its fine mesh as the wash water circulates through the machine. The remnants eventually get flushed down the drain.
