Iii Are Hydro Flasks Dishwasher Safe
Our conclusion goes first: the answer is yes and no.
Traditionally, Hydro Flask water bottles are not dishwasher safe. After being washed in the dishwasher, the insulation function of the Hydro Flask water bottle is weakened, and the powder coating is ruined. Things become worse when the cap and straw are washed in this machine.
However, in 2020, with KingStarâs engineering support, Hydro Flask has released a new model. It is so called Hydro Flask 2.0, which is entirely dishwasher safe. A small change of the neck makes a difference. Currently, the hot temperature no longer damages the external finish, and the insulation performance will not be negatively affected, either. This new Hydro Flask stainless steel water bottle saves both time and labor!
Are The Old Hydro Flasks Dishwasher Safe Is It Bad To Put A Hydro Flask In The Dishwasher
Old hydro flasks are not dishwasher safe because the hot water from the dishwasher can damage the exterior of the hydro flask.
In addition, old hydro flasks also shouldnt be put into the dishwasher because the insulation can be highly damaged.
Moreover, the exterior coating that comes with the hydro flask is also prone to get discolored due to the hot temperature and soapy water.
In addition, old hydro flasks powder coating can also get damaged due to the humid environment within the dishwasher.
Additionally, it is also not safe to put hydro flasks lids into the dishwasher because the water can get inside the crevices of the lid of your hydro flask which will eventually lead to mold growth thus changing the taste of the water.
It is only in 2020 that hydro flasks are appearing to be dishwasher safe due to the stronger powder coating embedded with the hydro flask.
Therefore, it is not always a bad thing to put a hydro flask in the dishwasher as the newer version of the hydro flasks wont face any serious damage when put into the dishwasher.
Vi Common Mistakes When Cleaning/using A Hydro Flask
- Soaking a Hydro Flask water bottle with hot water is the worst thing you can do. Please do not underestimate the severity of wash the bottle with hot water, which weakens the insulation function by lowering the effectiveness. Also, the coating that sticks to the outer stainless steel wall may peel off due to the high temperature.
- It would be bad to freeze the Hydro Flask bottle in the refrigerator. Some people may seek for a further temperature drop inside of the bottle and choose to put Hydro Flask bottles in the refrigerator or freezer. Well, if it is a plastic water bottle, then their actions are acceptable and feasible as the temperature inside of a plastic water container can be easily affected. However, Hydro Flask adopts triple-layered insulation technology that minimizes activities such as radiation and convection, in other words, the bottle will not be affected by the external temperature.
According to KingStarâs experiment data from Customer Service Department, a Hydro Flask can remain piping hot water warm for almost 8 hours when placed in a refrigerator! If customers really want to make their drinks cooler, try to pre-chill the bottle with ice cubes instead of wasting the time putting bottles in the freezer.

Why Does My Hydro Flask Smell
Hydro Flask definitely have the potential to grow mould or to obtain bad smells if you don’t clean them properly. Mold likes to grow in dark damp places and given that your Hydro Flask is used for wet drinks and can remain wet for long periods of time this can create perfect growing conditions for mold.
Why Aren’t Hydro Flask Bottles Dishwasher Safe

Hydro Flask bottles work so well at keeping drinks either cold or hot because they are double walled with a vacuum inbetween the inner and outer wall.
Most heat needs a medium to pass through so by having a vacuum it insulates the bottle really well.
The issue with putting your Hydro Flask in the dishwasher is that the extreme heat of a dishwasher actually has the potential to compromise the vacuum seal on your bottle.
It only takes a very small compromise in the vacuum seal for the entire vacuum space to fill up with air. Once this happens your bottle loses it’s insulating properties and there is no common way to fix this.
Hydro Flask use a unique and innovative way of creating their vacuum seal that removes the use to leadyeh that’s right other vacuum sealed bottles use LEAD to create the vacuum seal. But Hydro Flask don’t.
It may be that this type of seal isn’t quite as good. This great article by Inc talks about how they had problems with the insulating abilities of their bottles when they first changed their manufacturing back in 2013:
We found 7 percent or 8 percent didn’t work, much higher than we would expect, and from then, it was all hands on deck to work with the factories and see if we could get to the point where we could trust their quality.
However, by early 2014 this problem was fixed:
By early 2014, we could meet demand with the quality we wanted.

Hydro Flask Redesigned Their Bottles In 2020 And Made Them Dishwasher Safe
Hydro flasks cannot be washed in the dishwasher. In 2020, the answer became, yes, Hydro Flasks are dishwasher safe, but yeah, there are certain things you should be aware of.
Even while Hydro Flask has revised the product descriptions for most of its products to indicate that they are dishwasher safe, the care instructions still advise against using dishwashers. Thats acceptable, given the volume of pages to manage and the fact that items occasionally slip through the cracks. I wouldnt be shocked if it was upgraded shortly.
The new wide-mouth Hydro Flask water bottles have a new matte powder coating for a better grip and no sweat. With a basic modern water bottle design, the Hydro Flask wide-mouth insulated water bottle with a straw lid has reimagined what a classic metal water bottle can be.
Can The Dishwasher Wear Down Your Hydroflask Overtime
If you are putting a Hydroflask that is dishwasher safe in the dishwasher, it shouldnt wear it down too much. It is possible for it to wear down a little bit faster than it would if you were to hand wash it every time. However, you wont be doing any damage.
The problem is when you put an old Hydroflask in the dishwasher. At minimum, you might get lucky and nothing bad will happen. At the most, the vacuum seal may get broken and your Hydroflask wont keep liquids hot or cold anymore.
Hydroflasks have two walls: An inner wall, and an outer wall. There is a vacuum seal in between these walls that works as insulation, keeping drinks hot or cold for a long amount of time. But putting your Hydroflask in the dishwasher will make it get really hot, and this could break the vacuum seal and compromise this effect.
Putting your non dishwasher safe bottle in the dishwasher could also cause some wear and tear. Your bottle might become dull, discolored, or flaky. So its definitely important to listen when your Hydroflask says that its not dishwasher safe.

Cleaning Products To Avoid
You should never use bleach, acid, or other similar harsh cleaning products on a Hydro Flask. In fact, you should NEVER use such toxic and dangerous substances on anything that comes in contact with your beverages and food.
Not only will these ingredients damage the stainless steel of the bottle and cause rusting, they present a major risk to your health.
How Should You Wash A Hyrdoflask That Isnt Dishwasher Safe
All you have to do to clean your Hydroflask is scrub it with warm, soapy water. If its really dirty, you could let it sit in this water for a few minutes before you start scrubbing it. Its best to use a soft washcloth to scrub the outside of your Hydroflask so that you can avoid chipping off any paint.
For the inside of your Hydroflask, you can use some sort of bottle brush made for cleaning water bottles. These are usually long with bristles on the end that will scrub inside of your bottle.
After scrubbing your Hydroflask, just rinse it with clean, warm water and place it on a rack to dry. Its important that you let it air dry all the way before putting it away so that you avoid any bacteria growth in the leftover stagnant water.

What Hydro Flasks Arent Dishwasher Safe
Now that weve covered which Hydro Flasks are dishwasher safe, lets take a closer look at what ones arent.
As weve already covered, older Hydro Flasks made before 2020 cant be put in the dishwasher. This is because the heat on a dishwasher can compromise the vacuum insulation that makes Hydro Flasks so effective at maintaining their temperature.
Additionally, the non-slip powder coating on older Hydro Flasks can get damaged or discolored when submerged in hot water for extended periods of time.
However, just because newer Hydro Flasks are dishwasher safe it doesnt mean that you should put them in the dishwasher. While the new design is theoretically dishwasher safe, this isnt always the case. Longer and/or hotter cycles are still more than capable of damaging the seal of your Hydro Flask, and it only takes a tiny compromise to the vacuum for it to lose its insulating properties.
The same applies to the powder coating, which can still be damaged or discolored if submerged for long enough.
Not every style of Hydro Flask is 100% dishwasher safe, either, and this includes bottles with the new design. Depending on the style of Hydro Flask, there may be parts that are either top-rack wash only, or cant go into the dishwasher at all.
These include parts like straws and most lids , none of which are dishwasher safe. Many types of the bottles themselves are also only suitable to be put on the top rack of the dishwasher on a gentler cycle.
Why Clean The Flask I Only Put Water In It

Hydro Flask will need a thorough cleaning occasionally, even if youâre only using it for water. Every time you take a sip, some bacteria from your mouth will find their way into the bottle. Theyâll continue to grow there, and might eventually have negative effects on your health.
Similarly, there might be bacteria or germs in the water as well and theyâll grow inside the bottle. Other problematic organisms like fungi may also take root if the bottle isnât cleaned regularly.
A rinse with water isnât enough. Your bottle needs proper cleaning. It isnât difficult and youâll be done in a jiffy.

The Hydro Flask Buying Guide
- If you plan to use any of the accessories like special lids that Hydro Flask offers, be sure to check for compatibility with the container size and type you choose.
- Hydro Flasks do a better job keeping liquids cold than hot. For example, the containers keep hot drinks hot for just 6 to 12 hours versus 24 for cold drinks.
- To clean your Hydro Flask, you might be able to put it in the dishwasher as long as its powder coated. Otherwise, you can use normal soap and water for handwashing or seek one of the special cleaning kits or cleaning tablets the company makes.
- You might find that your Hydro Flask gets rusty over time. You can try a vinegar and baking soda mixture to try to get rid of it. Youll want to wait around 5 to 10 minutes before attempting to scrub off the area.
- If youd prefer to fill your Hydro Flask as infrequently as possible, consider opting for one of the large bottles and choosing the wide-mouth option. Doing so will not only give you the largest capacity, but the wider mouth will make the refilling process faster.
- While you can find several Hydro Flask color options already, its become popular to customize the bottle further with stickers and even custom paint jobs. So, you can always get a plain bottle and be creative.

The Change The New Hydro Flask Bottle
There arenât many visual changes to suggest what actually changed, but suffice to say, the newer bottles are dishwasher safe. Even so, do remember to read instructions for your Hydro Flask before you chuck it into the dishwasher.
One change is that older Hydro Flask bottles have a rounded bit of steel near their neck and the cap threads on the outside. Newer bottles have a straighter stainless steel piece at the top, no external threads for the cap. But then several dishwasher-safe Trail Series bottles too have the rounded bit of steel and cap threads. So it probably isnât the best indicator.
Another change is that the logo on newer bottles has gone smaller. Additionally, theyâve removed the registered trademark symbol ® from the bottleâs design print.
Anyways, the new design puts Hydro Flask at par with Yeti Rambler, the competitor which is dishwasher safe. Most Hydro Flask alternatives continue to prefer manual washing over dishwashers. However, since two big brands are now moving towards dishwasher-safe bottles, we can expect others to follow suit soon.

The Flex Cap, Wide Flat Cap, Stainless Steel Flat Cap, Standard Loop Cap and Narrow Loop Cap can take on water when they are run through the dishwasher or submerged in water for an extended time. Instead, we recommend hand washing them with hot, soapy water, rinsing and allowing them to dry.

What Happens If You Put Your Hydro Flask In A Dishwasher
The hot water impact of the dishwasher may damage the hydro flasks insulation.
Dishwashers are not safe for Hydro Flasks that are not powder coated. Some people use hydro flasks like standard water glass or steel items. However, the situation with the hydro flasks is different.
These vacuum-insulated stainless steel hydro flasks are vacuum-insulated. They may appear as rough materials, but placing them in a dishwasher can destroy their durability and insulation. Dishwasher washing arms may also not effectively clean the interior of the hydro flask.
Dishwashers frequently use warm water to clean flatware, especially when sanitize mode is selected. The warm water effect aids in the removal of stubborn stains while also keeping the products bacteria-free. Hot water might impair the insulating properties of the flask, discoloring the powder effect.
Similarly, immersing the flask in hot water outside is not safe. Heat can harm the flasks external body, diminishing the flasks ability to keep the water cool.
