How Does Booster Work Together With Dishwasher Detergent And Rinse Aid
For extra clean and sparkly dishes, you want to use dish detergent + detergent booster + rinse aid. Each product has a unique cleaning purpose, and dishware will come out brighter than if you use detergent alone.
- Dish detergent does the main cleaning job and removes stains and leftover food gunk.
- Dishwasher booster takes care of the mineral deposit haze and the toughest hard water stains.
- Rinse aid flushes away any residue from the detergent and booster and helps dishes dry streak-free and spotless.
Cyna and I developed recipes for homemade dishwasher powder, DIY dishwasher pods, and dishwasher rinse aid that work beautifully with my hard water dishwasher booster. Like this recipe, they are quick, easy, and all-natural.

I Have Soft Water Should I Still Add Dish Detergent Booster
No, chances are you dont need a dishwasher additive for hard water.
If you experience residue on your dishes, its probably not mineral deposits but too much dishwasher detergent. A simple solution could be to reduce the amount of detergent because soft water cleans with less detergent than hard water.
Does It Really Work
The short answer is yes, but it depends on two thingshow bad the soap scums are in your shower and how much patience you have.
Because dishwasher tablets are small, they cover a very small surface area when youre on your hands and knees scrubbing away. It might take some time for the surfaces to sparkle again, but as long as youre ready to put in the effort, the tablets should clean up your shower without breaking the bank. Why Diy Dishwasher Booster For Hard Water
Got hard water? Then you know how frustrating it is. You run the dishwasher. But instead of clean and refreshed dinnerware, you get water spots, streaky plates, cloudy glasses, and a stubborn white residue. Ugh!
The residue film is caused by mineral deposits from hard water. These deposits arent harmful but SUPER ANNOYING. I mean, whats the point of dishwashing when you end up with hazy glasses and yucky white stuff all over your plates?
This residue film forms when the dishwasher detergent binds with the minerals in hard water and settles on your dishes. No matter what wash cycle you choose or how many times your run your appliance, dishes wont come out clean.

Storage Instructions And Shelf Life
As Ive mentioned earlier, citric acid tends to absorb moisture from the ambiance. Moisture will reduce its potency and can use the citric acid granules to harden.
To ensure that doesnt happen, keep the hard water booster powder in an airtight, sealed glass jar. Store the jar in a dry, cool location, away from direct sunlight and any heat sources. Room temperature is fine.
Ive put my dish booster in a beautiful glass canister with a bamboo lid. The lid has a silicone band that locks out any moisture. You can download the printable label you see in the photos at the end of this post.
Citric acid has a shelf life of around 3 years, and grapefruit essential oil lasts for 1 to 2 years. For the best results, I recommend you use your DIY dishwasher booster within 12 months of making.

Dishwasher Detergent Vs Dishwashing Soap
Dishwashing Soap and Dishwasher Detergent This is not the same thing. Dishwasher detergent, used in dishwashers, has a high PH and typically contains bleach and other chemicals. If you have ever poured some into a bucket of hot water, you will notice that it does not easily dissolve like dish soap.
It is made this way because it needs to wash dirty and grimy plates and dishes. The dishwasher also sprays water with force and high heat, which helps the detergent easily break up the fat molecules. The same force and heat are not typically used in washing machines, and you need to consider this before using it.
Dishwashing detergent, or dish soap, is a liquid, like Dawn, that you wash your dishes with in the kitchen sink. It does not contain bleach and consists of a blend of surfactants .
Because of this, it makes the PH closer to neutral, making it easier on your skin than dishwashing detergent.
Can I Use Tapioca Starch In Place Of Colloidal Oatmeal
No, starches like tapioca starch, corn starch, or arrowroot powder dont dissolve in water and can clog your dishwasher. If you cant find colloidal oatmeal, simply omit it from the recipe.
Colloidal oatmeal is really only meant to avoid clumping in high humidity conditions. The DIY dishwasher boost will work just as fine without it.

Does Diy Dishwasher Booster Powder Actually Work
You might be skeptical but let me assure you: This homemade dishwasher booster performs exactly the same as the store-bought stuff just without the synthetic additives.
Okay, and why does citric acid work so well? Here is what you need to know:
- Hard water is loaded with minerals that leave a chalky, white residue on everything the water touches. These minerals occur naturally in the soil and arent harmful but can cause havoc on pipes and water-running appliances.
- Water spots and scaling are good indications that you live in a region with hard water. Extremely hard water will not only leave water spots, but a white film, and your dishes wont seem clean after the dishwasher cycle ends.
- Citric acid is a chelating agent and effective natural water softener. It binds the minerals in hard water and flushes them down the drain. Chelators are organic compounds that bind metal ions . Once bound, these ion clusters become soluble and can no longer settle on surfaces. They simply wash away and that means clean dishes for you!
I Want To Use All 3 Where Do I Put Them

Where you put everything depends on how many detergent drawers your dishwasher has. You can find the detergent drawer on the side of the dishwasher door.
Some dishwashers have 3 compartments , others only 2 chambers .
- Dishwasher with 3 compartments: Fill the pre-wash chamber with dish detergent. Load the main drawer with dish booster, and fill the rinse aid reservoir with rinse aid.
- Dishwasher with 2 compartments: Put the detergent on the floor of the dishwasher. Place the booster in the main detergent compartment and the rinse aid in the rinse aid dispenser.

Surprising Uses For Dishwasher Detergent
Since dishwasher detergent has a stronger PH than laundry detergent, it is excellent for washing grimy, oily things like dishes. You can also use it to wash oily stained clothing in your washing machine.
First, it is best to rub some dish soap, not dishwasher detergent, on the affected areas and then toss it directly into the washing machine with some dishwasher detergent. Rubbing in some soap beforehand will ensure the item cleans easily in the washing machine.
You can also use dishwasher detergent in toilets with nasty stains on, and in them. Stains take some scrubbing to remove with the toilet brush, but if you pour some dishwasher detergent onto the stains, and let it soak for a bit, and then scrub, it will work unbelievably well and remove all the nasty stains.
If you have an oil stain on the garage floor or outside on your driveway, you do not have to buy any particular cleaning product for it. Then use your dishwasher detergent. It will effectively clean away stains and often at a fraction of the cost of purchasing a specific household cleaner.
I also wrote an article on what to do if you used laundry detergent in the dishwasher.

When softball/baseball season comes around, my hubby and son play on multiple teams and in lots of tournaments. Their uniform pants – usually white – are consistently subjected to ground in dirt, grass, even blood stains.
After the games, I fill the kitchen sink with hot water and add a cup or two of powdered dishwasher soap and soak the uniform pants for an hour or so. For extra tough stains, I make a paste out of the powdered soap, add a little laundry soap and use an old toothbrush to pre-treat and then soak.
Then, I just throw in the washing machine. The pants come out bright white and stain free. It works great! Use on work pants, kids clothes, etc. Just be sure to adjust water temperature accordingly.

Did you know there are lots of other uses for dishwasher pods besides cleaning dishes? I recently figured this out when I goofed and ended up with a huge supply.
On my last Sams Club run, I decided to go ahead and try a different brand of dishwasher detergent because the off-brand was $5 cheaper. Heres a tip: If youre going to try a different brand, dont do it in a club pack that is going to take you a year to go through.
One week in, I realized that I should have bought my regular brand because the cheaper one just wasnt getting the job done. Did I want to suffer for another 3 months or cut my losses and toss the ineffective brand in the garbage?
Being the cheapskate, I mean thrifty consumer, that I am, I chose option 3 Find something else to use the pods for so I could justify buying the brand I should have gotten in the first place. BTW, this is what I should have bought:
Happily, I discovered SEVERAL uses for dishwasher tablets other than for washing dishes. So, if you happen to find yourself stuck with a bunch of dishwasher detergent that isnt cutting it in the kitchen, or if you scored an amazing deal and stocked up with more than you can use in the foreseeable future, here are some ways to make good use of it.

Above I’ve collected the tips which have already been submitted for how to use this product for cleaning and stain removal, but I’m sure there are even more ways.
Be sure to tell me whether your tip uses powder or gel detergent, since there is sometimes a difference.
In addition, please share not only how it worked for cleaning, but how it effected the surface you cleaned or laundered, since sometimes this can be a harsh way to clean and it can cause damage if not done carefully.
